Abstract: A resource may be identified according to multiple Uniform Resource Locators (“URL”) according to systems and methods for encapsulating an alternative URL inside a primary “carrier” URL to form a compound URL or “smart link” and for processing smart links thereby formed. A preferred URL may be encapsulated into a smart link for use by client devices that support handling of the preferred URL, while other client devices may use a default or fallback URL that is also encapsulated into the smart link. The alternative URL is indicated by a pre-determined key included in the primary carrier URL.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of semantically linking, by a computing device, a citing document to a cited document in a corpus of documents includes locating at least one citation present in the citing document, determining a reason-for-citing for at least one citation, and determining a cited-text-area present in the cited document, wherein the cited-text-area corresponds with the reason-for-citing. The method further includes populating a citation entry of a citation-pairing metadata file with a citing-document identifier, a reason-for-citing identifier, a cited-document identifier, and a cited-text-area identifier. The citation-pairing metadata file includes a plurality of citation entries and is stored separately from the citing document and the cited document.

Abstract: Methods, devices, systems and tools are presented that allow the summarization of text, audio, and audiovisual presentations, such as movies, into less lengthy forms. High-content media files are shortened in a manner that preserves important details, by splitting the files into segments, rating the segments, and reassembling preferred segments into a final abridged piece. Summarization of media can be customized by user selection of criteria, and opens new possibilities for delivering entertainment, news, and information in the form of dense, information-rich content that can be viewed by means of broadcast or cable distribution, “on-demand” distribution, internet and cell phone digital video streaming, or can be downloaded onto an iPod™ and other portable video playback devices.

Abstract: A system includes a display, a processor executing an application program for displaying an annotation file, and memory storing program instructions of the application program. The processor associates an annotation with a programming module of a baseline file to display, in an unsegmented window of a graphical user interface, the baseline file as a hierarchical structure having nodes. Each node represents a programming module of the baseline file. Displayed is an annotation in the unsegmented window of the GUI proximate to the node that represents the programming module with which the annotation is associated. The displayed annotation includes selectable messages displayed proximate to each other to facilitate visual comparison. Each selectable message describes a modification made to the baseline file by a different contributor. The annotation indicates that the modifications produce a conflict. The conflict is resolvable within the unsegmented window by a selection of one of the selectable messages.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide for a serial subscriber to provide an RSS feed that is updated according to the user's consumption of serialized content. The serial subscriber creates a subscription request to receive a feed of serialized content from a content source, the feed comprising a plurality of episode references to episodes of the serialized content. The serial subscriber defines a subscription point relative to at least one episode reference within the feed of serialized content to designate where to parse the serialized content for downloading at least one episode of the serialized content. The serial subscriber creates a graphical representation of the at least one downloaded episode and monitors playback of the at least one downloaded episode to update the feed of serialized content with respect to the subscription point.

Certain aspects provide an input control through which a user can specify an explicit scope, or range, of items, while also identifying explicit exclusions from the specified scope, thereby reducing ambiguity regarding identification of items included and items excluded from the scope. When a user explicitly selects an item for inclusion in the scope, the explicitly selected item is added to the scope definition, and all descendants of the explicitly selected item are implicitly selected for inclusion. When a user explicitly selects an item for exclusion from the scope, the explicitly selected item is added to the scope definition as an exclusion from an explicitly included item, and all descendants of the explicitly selected item are implicitly selected for exclusion.

Abstract: Indexing domains of a declarative application with view state information for the domain to enable persisting the view state of the declarative application. The domains are organized in a tree. Each domain is built by a configuration builder. The method includes indexing a domain of a declarative application by indexing a path name in an index. The path name includes a path name of the parent domain of the domain; an identifier of the configuration builder used to build the domain; and an identifier of one or more local decisions made by the configuration builder when creating the domain. The method further includes correlating a unique identifier key to the path name in the index and correlating view state information for the domain to the unique key identifier.

Abstract: A method and system for retrieving and maintaining presentation data in a presentation cache is provided. In a preferred embodiment, a presentation cache object provides a presentation cache with multiple cache entries. Each entry contains an indication of the format of the presentation data and the presentation data stored in that particular format. In addition, other information, such as the advisees of advisory connections for notification of cache updates, can be maintained. The presentation cache object responds to requests for retrieving source object data by returning presentation data cached within the presentation cache when it is available. In addition, the presentation cache object determines when it should delegate requests to the source object and when it can satisfy them on its own. The presentation cache object can return presentation data to a requesting client program even if the server program implementing the source object is unavailable or not running.

Abstract: An apparatus for recording/reproducing external device data in a broadcast receiver and method thereof are disclosed, by which a broadcast receiver allowed by a certification key is enabled to access a corresponding external device only. The present invention includes a connection checking step of checking a state of a physical connection between an external device and the broadcast receiver, a certification key registration deciding step of deciding whether a reserved certification key is registered, an access allowance deciding step of if the certification key is registered, deciding whether to allow an access to the connected external device by verifying the certification key, and an access allowing step of if the access is allowed, recording/reproducing corresponding data by accessing the connected external device.

Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides a system and/or a method that facilitates displaying relevant advertisements to a user. A display engine can browse a portion of image data during a browsing session. An evaluator can identify a context related to two or more concurrent and on-going browsing sessions. An ad selector can locate an ad from a data store based on the identified context and seamlessly incorporate and display the ad into at least one of the browsing sessions.

Abstract: There is provided a system or the like capable of managing a document not printed on a paper medium so that an administrator of the document may be identified. According to the document management system of the present invention, a first processing unit 110 recognizes an identifier to identify a user or a department to which the user belongs. Abstract: An autocomplete method and system provides suggested completions for partial data entries based upon predefined coordinates, operands and/or commands. In one embodiment, the partial data entry may be in an active cell of a spreadsheet and the predefined coordinates may be queried from a separate, preconfigured, multi-dimensional database linked to the active cell or the spreadsheet.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of grouping similar supplier names together in a database. The syntactical errors in the supplier names are corrected. The supplier names are grouped after correcting the syntactical errors. The abbreviations in the supplier names are captured. The ordering, pronunciation and stemming errors in the supplier names are corrected. A matching algorithm that matches and compares two supplier names is applied that comprises the steps of grouping supplier names based on first set of characters in the supplier names and calculating a matching score between the two supplier using Levenshtein distance between the two supplier names, along with the supplier names' sound codes obtained from a modified metaphone algorithm, length of each word, position of matching and mismatching characters, and stem of words in the supplier names. The matching scores are compared with set thresholds in order to further group the supplier names into clusters.

Abstract: An enhanced find and replace feature for a spreadsheet program module is disclosed. The enhanced find and replace feature allows users to search for terms and attributes across multiple sheets of a workbook. The find and replace feature also allows searches to be performed based on the formatting attributes of a cell as well as the textual or numerical contents of a cell. The enhanced find and replace feature also allows users to perform bulk formatting of cells (even cells without text) in a spreadsheet. In another aspect, the enhanced find and replace feature lists all the results of the find operation in a results list so that the user may choose which result(s) to view and edit. In another aspect, the find and replace feature is modeless so that a user can search for terms or attributes, view a results list, exit the find and replace feature, perform editing functions in the document and then return to the find and replace feature.

Abstract: A method is disclosed of controlling a function of a device. The device is operative to perform the function in response to a command from a printer. The method starts by printing a control interface containing information relating to the function and coded data. The coded data is indicative of an identity of the control interface and of at least one reference point of the control interface. Next, indicating data is received by the printer from a sensing device. The indicating data contains the identity of the control interface and at least one position of the sensing device relative to the control interface. The sensing device forms the indicating data when placed in an operative position relative to the control interface using the coded data. Finally, the printer issues the command relating to the function to the device.

Abstract: Various technologies and techniques are disclosed for managing layout updates to user interface elements. A dirty state of user interface elements is tracked in a tree with multiple nodes of user interface elements. The dirty state allows dirty subtrees of the nodes to be identified. A root node is identified for each of the dirty subtrees. Affected portions of the tree are updated, starting with the root node that was identified for each of the dirty subtrees. As part of the update process, changes to ancestor nodes are detected and used to make a layout process more efficient. For example, any layout processes that are currently being performed on any descendant nodes of a changed ancestor are abandoned, and the layout process is resumed at the changed ancestor. After updating affected portions of the tree, the updated user interface elements are then rendered on an output device.

A system can also generate contextual data which is related to the content of a current communication and use that contextual data (in addition to any predetermined selection criteria) to select adaptive information that is relevant to a user's communications. Contextual data can be generated before a user is placed on hold by analyzing a communications signal in order to identify keywords that are based on the content of that communication.

Sequential undo (step-wise or by a slider) can be localized to chosen subsets of the current version, and any chosen subset can be restored as a unit to an earlier state.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing metadata search with plug-in applications is disclosed. Abstract: A method for automating variables in an end-user programming system is disclosed. The end-user programming system comprises a script, a shared repository, at least one database, a recorder, an interpreter, and an execution engine. The script comprises at least one command describing an event comprising a data value. Each user has a uniquely identified entry set for the entries distributed in at least one database. The interpreter automatically creates a variable for a data value in a command by comparing the data value with each entry value in the entry set for the user recording the command. The interpreter automatically instantiates a variable in a command with an entry value by comparing the variable with each entry name in the entry set for the user executing the command.

Abstract: An operating system can be extended to allow open documents to be automatically transferred from one application to another without saving the open documents. When a request is received to use an open document from a first application in a second application, an open document unit can determine if the open document has not been saved. The open document unit can create a temporary file based on the open document. The open document unit can open the temporary file in the second application. In addition, the open document unit can convert the temporary file into a format compatible with the second application if the temporary file's format is not compatible with the second application.

Abstract: A method consistent with certain embodiments of identifying a functional command set for an access device that accesses television programming provided by a service provider at a control device involves transmitting a first command from a first command set of a group of possible command sets for the access device to the access device. The first command includes a command that is expected to cause the access device to generate a text containing video frame. A determination is made as to whether the extracted text corresponds to the first command set. The first command set is identified as the functional command set for the access device in response to determining that the extracted text corresponds to the first command set. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.

Abstract: The disclosed system and method provides a user interface in which language-related content is decoupled from a document structure or content to permit the document to accept variable language text. The language-related content is stored separately from the document structure and content. The document without the language-related content acts like a template that can be populated with any type of language-related content. The language-related content can be provided in a separate file together with associated identifiers, and can be loaded into a cache or document object model (DOM) for processing. An XML file may be used for the language file, and the document may be constructed using HTML code. Document components can be assigned event handlers that cause pop-up boxes to be loaded and displayed with language-related content upon an event trigger.
