Abstract: Under the present invention, a source meeting partner can select a target application for sharing with one ore more destination meeting partners during a collaborative meeting. Upon selection of the target application, a portion of a meeting application window will be removed, and a window corresponding to the target application will be positioned to be viewable through the removed portion. If necessary, one or more navigators (e.g., scroll bars) can be provided to manipulate the target application window. Thus, the present invention allows the meeting application window and the target application window to be simultaneously viewable without requiring resizing or repositioning of either one.

Abstract: A system and method of displaying multiple, concurrent instant messaging (IM) sessions is described. The system and method includes providing multiple IM sessions, displaying a first one of the IM sessions in an IM session window. Abstract: A device and method for providing information about the relationships between a user of a device and sharers sharing data with the user is provided. The device includes a search unit, a storage unit, a User Interface (UI) generation unit, and a display unit. The search unit searches for information about the lower menu item icons of a specific menu item icon, and sharer icons representing sharers who share each of the lower menu item icons, when a user selects the specific menu item icon. The storage unit stores information about the menu item icon, the lower menu item icons, and the sharer icons for respective layer regions. The UI generation unit generates the menu item icons, the lower menu item icons, and the sharer icons. The display unit displays the generated menu item icons, lower menu item icon, and sharer icons.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for simultaneously displaying multiple-contexts in a page-oriented viewing architecture utilize the concept of page pinning in which a portion of a first document context is displayed as a fixed frame overlayed on or placed beside the display of a second document context. A user may navigate within the second document context while viewing the portion of the first document context as a pinned page on the display. Thus, a single navigational focus is maintained even though multiple contexts are displayed in the page-oriented architecture. Page pinning may be used to view two non-contiguous locations in a single electronic document or to view two pages of respective different electronic documents. The invention contemplates the use of a pinned page to hold a particular context while a command set is executed from a command document viewed as the second context.

Abstract: A virtual address bar user interface control is presented. The virtual address bar includes a plurality of interactive segments, each segment corresponding to a predetermined filter for selecting content in a computer file system. Collectively, the interactive segments represent a virtual address for selecting content. Selecting an interactive segment in the virtual address bar causes those segments subsequent to the selected segment to be removed from the virtual address bar. A user may select a peer filter for a segment to replace that segment's current filter and removes those segments subsequent to the updated segment. The virtual address bar can be selectively configured to operate as a conventional address bar, and reconfigured to operate as a virtual address bar. Additional filter segments are added to the end of the existing filter segments. Those existing filter segments that conflict with the added segment are removed from the virtual address bar.

Abstract: A system, method, and computer program for interactive communication among a plurality of users. The invention, called Holocene Conversation Mode (“HCM”), takes advantage of the observation that human beings have developed or utilize a number of real-world characteristics to participate in, perceive, control, and glean subtleties from conversations. These characteristics include proximity and orientation of a listener to other speakers, memory ageing, emphasis by a speaker, relative importance of a speaker to a listener, reputation of a speaker, and the unique human ability to “filter” words of special interest to a listener from overheard conversations. HCM includes a suite of techniques, including spatial and content compression as a function of some of such characteristics, that can be implemented in various combinations in computer software.

Abstract: A user interface and method for viewing short messages on a wireless device includes a viewing screen, a processor, a memory device and a message software interface module. The memory device stores electronic messages that have been transmitted or received by the wireless device. The message software interface module is executed by the processor and (a) displays a current electronic message on the viewing screen, (b) filters each of the electronic messages stored in the memory device to identify one or more select messages meeting a pre-set criteria, and (c) displays the one or more select messages on the viewing screen along with the current electronic message.

Each scaled virtual desktop displays with one or more scaled application windows as shadows if the corresponding full-size virtual desktop has one or more corresponding application windows that are active.

Abstract: A system and method for reformatting chain forwarded and chain replied electronic messages into thread-of-discussion messages for improved readability and reader comprehension. The chained electronic messages are parsed into discussion entries which are then sorted by a preferred order, such as last-to-first by date of creation. Extraneous fields and data which are not part of the substantive discussion are removed from the discussion entries. Long or full electronic mail addresses are replaced by abbreviations or preferred nicknames which may be found in an address book. Finally, the sorted discussion entries with source abbreviations or preferred nicknames are combined and output as a thread-of-discussion format message.

Abstract: An electronic board system includes an electronic board having a screen for displaying information of interest to a work group or community, an input device for receiving information from users in a group or community to be displayed on the electronic board, a memory for storing information received from the input device and a processor for selecting which information stored in the memory to display on the screen, where and how to display the selected information on the screen and displaying the selected information on the screen. The processor selects which information to display in accordance with a predetermined relationship based on a group-based recommendation criteria and user interest. A plurality of sensors disposed behind the screen detect user interest in information displayed on the screen near the sensor. User interest may also be determined by monitoring user requests for copies of information displayed on the screen.

Abstract: A computer-human interface manages the available space of a computer display in a manner which reduces clutter and confusion caused by multiple open windows. The interface includes a user-selectable mode of operation in which only those windows associated with the currently active task are displayed on the computer monitor. All other windows relating to non-active tasks are minimized by reducing them in size or replacing them with a representative symbol, such as an icon, so that they occupy a minimal amount of space on the monitor's screen. When a user switches from the current task to a new task, by selecting a minimized window, the windows associated with the current task are automatically minimized as the window pertaining to the new task is displayed at its normal size. As a result, the user is only presented with the window that relates to the current task of interest, and clutter provided by non-active tasks is removed.

Abstract: Audiovisual images from independent providers on the Internet are exhibited as part of an updating, shared, collaboratively-produced multimedia exhibition system. Each individual user can choose to include or exclude certain content by personalizing his collection of images, by optionally rating each picture. Groups of users can share their collections amongst themselves. Content providers on the internet can allow visitors to include their audivisual information by adding a single button. The server keeps profile information for each user and for the groups to which the user belongs.

Abstract: The present invention provides a collaboration technique for synchronizing display scrolling and the locations of remote pointers in the windows of web browsers, independent of the types and the setups of the web browsers. An example embodiment of an information processing system comprises: a collaboration server to be connected to a web server, and a plurality of terminals, for obtaining web content from the collaboration server and for performing a cooperative operation. Terminal devices includes a web browser for displaying web content, and obtains identification information for an object selected as a synchronization reference among objects in the web content, and transmits the information to the other terminal, with which it performs a cooperative operation. The terminal employs the identification information for a predetermined object that it receives, calculates the location of the pertinent object, and controls the web browser in accordance with the location of the object.

Abstract: A mouse driven splitter program and algorithm is disclosed herein. The invention is a user interface which solves the problem of interactively designing splitter window layouts by combining maximum flexibility and generality with user-friendliness. The invention allows a program user to create every possible combination of panes and nested splitter windows with no limitation on the nesting depth. The entire process is purely graphical, employing only the mouse as a tool. Similarly, the user can place content, such as a particular chart in any pane using the mouse only.

Abstract: A multi-layer graphical user interface provides multiple types of information in at least two layers of a common display space, such as a window. In one implementation, a shared network folder includes two layers of display objects to separately represent files contained in the folder and users with whom the folder is shared. The first or top layer may represent the files with conventional words, icons or other symbols. The second or lower level may represent the users with whom the folder is shared with words, icons or other symbols that are dimmed, blurred, or otherwise de-emphasized relative to the top layer.
