Abstract: Embodiments are provided for media playback controller interfaces, interface layouts, and interactions for facilitating a user's navigation and control of a media playback system. Implementation of a controller interface may involve displaying in an information window, content associated with a first tab at a position directly above the information window, displaying a second tab at a position directly below the information window, and in response to a first input, causing (i) the second tab to be displayed at a position directly below the first tab, (ii) the information window to be displayed at a position directly below the second tab, and (iii) the information window to display content associated with the second tab. Other configurations of tab and information window displays, some of which may be modified in response to user interactions with the controller interface, are also provided.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for generating search results with structured image sizes. According to one exemplary implementation, a process includes the operations of determining an initial height and an initial width of an image that is associated with a search result, wherein the image is to be displayed in the search result in line with text associated with the search result, and wherein the search result includes an in-line image region for displaying the image in line with the text, and a text region for displaying the text, and determining an initial height of the text region of the search result based at least on (i) the text associated with the search result, and (ii) an initial width of the text region. The process also includes outputting the scaled image for display in the search result in line with the text.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an electronic reader. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for providing an electronic reader having interactive and educational features. Generally, the electronic reader allows a user to view text on a visually perceptible output device (e.g., a screen) and to interact with the electronic reader through a tactile input device (e.g., a mouse). The user selects and, thereby, visually and/or audibly emphasizes words in the text through the use of the tactile input device. In some cases, the electronic reader records and reports the words that the user selects. Additionally, in some cases, pages of text displayed on the visually perceptible output device can be peeled back to reveal additional pages of text.

Abstract: A device and a method for searching for an electronic book (e-book) in a portable terminal are provided. More particularly, a device and a method for searching for an e-book in a portable terminal, which can conveniently manage and search for a plurality of e-books in a portable terminal, are provided. The device includes a display unit for displaying categories of e-books that each include one or more e-books, and a controller for controlling such that an e-book is searched for by displaying and scrolling through the categories of e-books according to a detected shift of the portable terminal, a corresponding category is enlarged according to a touch to the corresponding category, and at least one of the one or more e-books included in the enlarged category is displayed.

Abstract: A system and method of speech bubbles layout are described. A context module determines geometric constraints of speech bubbles for characters in an image and features of the characters in the image, receives a speech content for one or more characters, and identifies a conversation order of the characters. A layout module generates a layout of the speech bubbles based on the features of the characters, the speech content, and the conversation order. The layout of the speech bubbles is within the geometric constraints of the speech bubbles in the image.

Abstract: A method of dialing a phoneword using a mobile communication device that has full keyboard, which maps numbers to letters differently than on standard telephone keypads. The method detects the prefix of the phoneword and proceeds to display a message on the mobile communication device to indicate that a pre-determined key needs to be pressed before entering letters of the phoneword. The method can also display for selection, candidate phonewords that correspond to a partial entry of the phoneword.

Abstract: A method for operating a user interface, wherein at least one flat graphics object is shown on a display surface in a first view showing a first side of the object and in a second view showing the second side of the object. On different sides of the object, different information is shown and the view of the graphics object is varied such that, in a perspective view on the display surface, the graphics object rotates from the first side to the second side when a first or a second control signal has been triggered. Different information is shown on the second side after a rotation from the first side to the second side depending on whether the first or the second control signal has been triggered. Also disclosed is a device for providing such a user interface.

Abstract: A method of presenting computer-generated search result information can include receiving a search request from a client computer; identifying a plurality of search results responsive to the search request; ranking the plurality of search results using content in one or more web notebooks; and providing the ranked plurality of search results for presentation in the client computer. Using the content can include determining whether at least one of a title, a heading, clipped content, metadata or a user-annotation in at least one web notebook relates to the search request and, if so, increasing a ranking of at least one search result referenced by the at least one web notebook.

The query optimizer optimizes a query to reduce network traffic on a network or node that is overloaded or above an established parameter in a node/network attribute table. The query optimization to reduce network traffic may result in a sub-optimal query in other respects such as execution time. The result is a query optimizer that rewrites or optimizes a query to execute on multiple nodes or networks to reduce traffic on a network or node according to the loading characteristics and assigned attributes of a node or network.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting game elements in a gaming machine are described herein. In an embodiment, the method includes displaying a plurality of player-selectable elements. Responsive to player input via at least one input device, a first element of the plurality of player-selectable elements is selected. The selected first element is animated with a first animation to commence revealing an outcome associated with the selected first element. After the first element has been selected and while the selected first element is still animating, responsive to player input via the at least one input device, a second element of the plurality of player-selectable elements is selected. The selected second element is animated with a second animation to commence revealing an outcome associated with the selected second element. The method then reveals the outcome associated with the selected first element and the outcome associated with the selected second element.

Abstract: A composite variable duration soundtrack for a user to play while reading a text source, the soundtrack duration being defined by a soundtrack timeline. The soundtrack comprises multiple sound layers configured to play concurrently through the soundtrack timeline, each sound layer having an arrangement of one or more audio features that are configured to play at preset start times in the soundtrack timeline. At at least one sound layer is adapted for modifying the preset start and stop times of its audio features to match the reading speed of a user based on a reading speed input.

Abstract: A method for annotating general objects contained in video content is provided. The method sends video data to a client device and receives a first annotation from the client device defining a boundary around a portion of a first frame of the video data. Then, the first annotation is tracked through multiple frames of the video content. Other annotations determined to be associated with annotation that match the first annotation within a threshold are determined where the other annotations are received from other client devices and located in the first frame or other frames from the first frame. The method combines the other annotations and the first annotation into an object track and associates a tag with the object track. The tag is input by at least one of the client devices.

Abstract: A mobile terminal is provided that includes a touch screen configured to display an e-book including one or more pages. The mobile terminal further includes a controller configured to set a bookmark on a selected page of the one or more pages when a touch input applied in a touch direction from an inner portion of the selected page toward an outer portion of the selected page is detected. The controller is further configured to generate and display a first type bookmark icon or a second type bookmark icon corresponding to the bookmark set on the selected page.

Abstract: A method and system for providing text-to-audio conversion of an electronic book displayed on a viewer. A user selects a portion of displayed text and converts it into audio. The text-to-audio conversion may be performed via a header file and pre-recorded audio for each electronic book, via text-to-speech conversion, or other available means. The user may select manual or automatic text-to audio conversion. The automatic text-to-audio conversion may be performed by automatically turning the pages of the electronic book or by the user manually turning the pages. The user may also select to convert the entire electronic book, or portions of it, into audio. The user may also select an option to receive an audio definition of a particular word in the electronic book. The present invention allows a user to control the system by selecting options from a screen or by entering voice commands.

Abstract: An electronic book system provides interfaces particularly suited to students' use of textbooks. A finger press on a touch screen produces a contextual menu with user choices that relate to where the finger was pressed or what the user was recently doing with the book. A student provisionally navigates through a book by a specific gesture which, when it stops, returns the user to the previous position in the book. Annotations are displayed and hidden using specific gestures and through selective movement of the reader as sensed by its accelerometer.

The processor also interprets user action of a second type as a placeholder. Abstract: A user interface for a touch-screen display of a computing device is described. The user interface has an edge navigation feature designed to facilitate navigation through digital content items, such as electronic books, in response to user input received via the touch-screen display. This navigation may be to an arbitrary point within the content, or to previously defined bookmarks. The user interface provides a representation of a virtual edge of the content object, such as a book or album. Presentation of this virtual edge, overlaid with bookmark indicators, allows the user to spatially visualize the position of content within the book, and select a desired location or bookmark.

A common Web-based platform for assessment application distribution, selection, download, data management and reporting is also provided. Users can then periodically synchronize instructional data (assessments, diagnostic results, notes and/or schedules) to the Web site. At the Web site, browser-based reports and analysis can be viewed, administered and shared via electronic mail.
