Abstract: A method of displaying tab titles in a computer user interface receives a request to display a new tab in a tab area having a length. The new tab has a width and the new tab has a title having a length. The method determines a number of tabs to be displayed in the area and determines if the number of tabs to be displayed multiplied by the tab width is greater than the length of the tab area. If so, the method sets the tab width equal to the length of the tab area divided by the number of tabs. The method determines if the length of the title is greater than the tab width. If so, the method determines if the title has any words in common with any other titles of tabs. If so, the method deletes the common words from the titles, and displays the titles with the deleted common words in the tabs. The method may set a maximum number of tabs to be displayed in the tab area. The maximum number of tabs may be determined by the length of the tab area and a minimum tab width.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for controlling application programs are described. A first item and a docking interface having a second item are displayed on a screen space. A selection of the first item is received. A proxy of the first item is positioned over the second item. Next, a window is displayed in response positioning. An application is executing to display the window. In another embodiment, synchronizing a first docking interface on a first screen space of a first machine to a second docking interface on a second screen space of a second machine is performed. The first docking interface has an item that identifies a first application supported by the first machine and the second docking interface has another item that identifies a second application supported by the second machine.

Abstract: Scrolling data in a display window having peripheral controls on a user interface of a data processing system includes a two-dimensional scrolling control that is integrated as part of the peripheral controls. The two-dimensional scrolling control includes at least three directional components. Each directional component is associated with a direction on the display window, and at least one of the directions corresponds to a change in both of the two dimensions. User input is accepted from a user. The user input includes a selected directional component. The data in the display window is scrolled in the direction associated with the selected directional component.

Abstract: A three or more dimensional (3+D) graphical user interface (GUI) uses detected three dimensional (3D) hand movements or other input devices to navigate a displayed two dimensional (2D), three dimensional, or 3+D representation of a corresponding menu, document, or data set. Specific hand motions may be used that correspond to navigational commands, including, but not limited to: up, down, left, right, select, exit, back, new search, start, close, and deselect. The GUI displays two initially perpendicular axes, with additional axes sufficiently off angle that their navigation is apparent, rather than hidden. The 3+D GUI may be used for navigating large complex data sets, such as search results, document library storage, or simpler data sets, such as TV menus, music selection, photographs, videos, etc.

Abstract: Methods for the intelligent rendering of information in a limited display environment are provided. Display environments, especially in mobile devices, are limited with regard to physical space and technical capability. The present invention provides for the scaling of information in the display in light of those limitations. Additional methods for intelligently determining information to be or not to be displayed in the environment are further provided. Determinations of information to be displayed may be a result of a user-determination or automatic determinations made by a user device. Zooming and ‘quick look’ features are also provided.

Abstract: A user-activatable dashboard (also referred to as a unified interest layer) contains any number of user interface elements, referred to herein as “widgets,” for quick access by a user. In response to a command from a user, the dashboard is invoked and the widgets are shown on the screen. The user can activate the dashboard at any time, causing the dashboard to temporarily replace the existing user interface display on the user's screen. Once the dashboard has been activated, the user can interact with any or all of the widgets, and can configure the dashboard by adding, deleting, moving, or configuring individual widgets as desired. When the user wishes to return to the normal user interface he or she was working with, the user issues a command causing the dashboard to be dismissed. Once the dashboard has been dismissed, the previous user interface state is restored, allowing the user to resume normal interactions with the operating system.

Abstract: A system and method for managing software application windows in a graphical user interface having a desktop and taskbar display area are provided. Each instantiated program is represented as one or more graphical windows in the desktop and as a control tile in the taskbar. Control tiles are grouped into control tile groups that facilitate organization and single access control. Project control tile groups allow the grouping of multiple software applications. Additionally, minimized control tile group layout and state may be preserved and previewed prior to being restored.

Abstract: A method and user interface permits the display of objects in a portion of a display. The objects may initial be a first size, then shrink to a smaller size after a period of time. The objects may stack on top of each other. In addition, the objects may disappear all together after a further amount of time.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer-readable media for providing a scenario desktop for recording a current event scenario and a content desktop for presenting information about a previously recorded event scenario are disclosed. When a first event scenario is detected on the mobile device, the scenario desktop is presented on the mobile device. The scenario desktop exists in parallel with a default primary desktop of the mobile device. An information bundle is created for the first event scenario, including one or more documents accessed through the scenario desktop during the first event scenario. Access to the one or more documents is automatically provided on the mobile device during a second event scenario related to the first event scenario. The access is provided through the content desktop existing in parallel with the primary desktop and the scenario desktop. Other scenario-based content retrieval and presentation methods are also disclosed.

Abstract: An abbreviated user interface for instant messaging (or other type of communications occurring in a graphical user interface environment permitting concurrent running of multiple application) is provided. The abbreviated user interface is different from a related primary user interface and is presented when the primary user interface is instantiated, yet is not on top of a z-order of a graphical environment. The abbreviated user interface can be a light-weight one that permits a user to quickly read messages. In one embodiment, a user can create outgoing messages using the abbreviated user interface. Presentation of the abbreviated user interface can require a user action, such as hovering a pointer over a task bar element for a duration or pressing a hot-key combination. In one embodiment, presentation of an otherwise unread message within the abbreviated interface for a designated time can cause the message to be marked as read.

Abstract: The present disclosure features methods and systems for updating a taskbar, generated and displayed by a local computer, with a user interface element representative of a remote application executing on a remote computer and application output generated by the remote application. These methods and system include a local client receiving application output generated by a remote application and remote window configuration information, generating an application output window comprising local taskbar grouping configuration information, and updating a taskbar responsive to the local taskbar grouping configuration information.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for presenting input fields from a document. A selected indicator associated with a set of mandatory input fields in the document is identified. The set of mandatory input fields is presented. Further, the mandatory input fields may be pre-filled using data from a repository associated with a user.

Abstract: Systems, methods, computer-readable mediums, user interfaces and other implementations are disclosed for organizing, managing and presenting widgets in display areas associated with multiple dashboard environments. In some implementations, a first display area associated with a first dashboard environment is configured for displaying at least one widget from a first set of widgets. A second display area associated with a second dashboard environment is configured for displaying at least one widget from a second set of widgets.

Abstract: A graphical user interface allows users to access multiple third party services (e.g., online media services) and enables the services to provide functionality within the GUI adjacent to core functionality of a host application (e.g., a media player application, operating system shell, etc.). The GUI provides an interface region for third party service functionality that is distinct from, but equal in exposure and prominence to, the core functionality provided by the application hosting the GUI. The GUI enables seamless switching between a list of available services provided in a service menu. Switching between services replaces service function buttons and service branding according to particular service customizations.

Abstract: Computer implemented methods for defining a navigation control, located inside of a shell of a word page are provided. The navigation control includes a plurality of dynamic controls defined as part of the navigation control. An associated dynamic control of the plurality of dynamic controls is associated with a tool and is configured to allow display of a user interface of the tool in an overlying window, without leaving the word page. The shell of the word page that includes a plurality of page modules is dynamically generated through a user action related to a word, and the plurality of page modules include content that is contextually related to the word. The overlying window is configured to be defined over one or more of the plurality of page modules. Further, the plurality of page modules are contextually related to the word when content of every page module in the plurality of page modules has some descriptive interrelated dependence to or from the word.

Abstract: A system and method for providing sticky applications are provided. A “sticky application” is an operating system (OS) level application that has the ability to “stick” to web applications and become a part of the web page on which the web application is running. While the sticky application is stuck to the web application, it behaves as if it were a web application with respect to the user. When the user chooses to “unstick” the application, it will return to behaving as an OS level application. The sticky application imitates being a web-based application instead of an operating system level application while stuck. This imitation involves the sticky application being placed on pixel coordinates within a web page of the web application and the sticky application remaining in the pixel coordinates within the web page where it is placed even when a user modifies the representation of the web page.

Abstract: A control and its associated programming interface for allowing entry of electronic ink, editing and other manipulation of the ink, and/or recognition of the ink. Ink may be stored in a data structure such as an ink object that permits later retrieval by applications. As is the case with text that may be bolded, underlined, italicized, and the like, the describe control and its programming interface may permit ink information to be manipulated as easily as text, while providing the richness of handwritten ink.

Abstract: The techniques and mechanisms described herein are directed to a method for managing multiple content windows. The content windows may host a web browser, a shell view, a word processing application, and the like. A set of content windows are grouped into a frame in a manner such that a taskbar shows one item for the set of content windows. Each content window is associated with a tab for the frame. A content-specific menu may be associated with each tab. The content-specific menu includes a set of commands based on the heterogeneous content hosted in the content window. The set of commands provide functionality to the heterogeneous content.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for providing context-sensitive sidebar window display on an electronic desktop is provided. A document that includes digital data is maintained in electronic storage. The document is operated upon through an application window generated by an application program on an electronic desktop. A sidebar window is initially generated. Contextual information relevant to the document is determined. Part of the contextual information to present is selected based on a current state of the document in the application window. The selected part of the contextual information is presented in the sidebar window positioned visually adjacent to the application window. The contextual information presented in and the positioning of the sidebar window is continually updated in step with the current state of the document and the application window.

The method includes receiving a request for user information from a preparer application executing on a preparer system and sending a notification of the request to a browser application executing on a user system, where the notification of the request is presented on a user interface of the browser application. The method further includes receiving the user information from the browser application, where the user information corresponds to content of the browser application. The method further includes sending a notification of receiving the user information to the preparer application, where the user information is used by the preparer application to prepare documentation, and where interactions with the browser application occur through a browser extension of the browser application.

Abstract: A productivity software application in which a user chooses actions, from at least one of a menu bar, a tool bar, or a task pane, runs on a computer. While running the productivity software application, the computer monitors actions chosen by the user. Data is generated that represents a navigation menu. The navigation menu includes a limited set of choices based on previous actions chosen by the user in the productivity software application. The computer outputs the data representing the navigation menu for visual display, and receives input indicative of a user choice from the limited set of choices in the navigation menu.

Abstract: A taskbar control permits system operators to group application instances according to their own preferences. The taskbar control system groups application instances according to a default grouping scheme but permit the default grouping to be managed by operator control. The operator may move application instances among groups or to new groups via drag and drop commands, commands entered through context menus and the like.

Abstract: A display management method and system of a mobile terminal for switching between user interfaces of applications is disclosed. By mutually superposing and displaying icons of respective plural files and folders, and carrying out the flipping operation for thus superposed and displayed icons, an arbitrary icon is shifted and displayed such that the icon is spread. Accordingly, the operation of searching for a desired icon from among the plural icons can be made more intuitive and comprehensible with a sense of flipping a page of a book. Abstract: Embodiments relating to facilitating communication between an adaptive input device and a device desktop application program in a computing system are disclosed. The computing system displays a variation control gallery containing variation controls in a class associated with a selected one of the class controls. In response to a selection of a variation control in the variation control gallery, the computing system applies a command associated with the variation control to a document in the document area.

Abstract: The invention provides a desktop control and a browser for a host apparatus of a digital multimedia network. The desktop control comprises a processing core having at least one desk parameter link (DPL) to a device parameter of the host apparatus. Furthermore, the processing core can have at least one desk application link (DAL) to a browser application of the host apparatus. The processing core further has one or more desk item links to other desktop controls of another apparatus within the digital multimedia network.

Abstract: Computer-readable media and methods to provide a toolbar application are described. The toolbar application receives indicators for determining when a context-specific search is executed. The toolbar application monitors uniform resource locator (URL) addresses to which a browser navigates for the inclusion of an indicator. Upon identifying an indicator in a URL the toolbar application presents filters that are associated with the indicator in a toolbar user interface. A user's selection of one or more of the filters is received at the toolbar user interface and the corresponding filters are applied to the context-specific search results by modifying the identified URL with a modifier associated with a selected filter and causing the browser or search engine to re-execute the search query with the selected filters applied. The filtered search results are presented to the user. The toolbar user interface is modified to indicate the application of the selected filters.

Abstract: A browser add-on toolbar that offers users to collect toolbars from visited webpages that offer such toolbars and which, later, the user may select any one of the collected toolbars to become the current toolbar that the browser provides to the user. These abilities are imparted by having the toolbar be sensitive to one or more particular flags in visited pages. When a browser that contains this toolbar visits a website, the browser parses and searches the visited website page for presence of one or more of the particular flags, and when such a flag is found, the user is given a visual indication of the find and is given the choice to include within the browser's toolbar the ability to instantiate a toolbar based on information associated with the flag.

The dashboard includes a content window that displays content and the buttontab, wherein the dashboard is a seamless visual combination of the buttontab and the content window.

Abstract: Radio client/server architectures and graphical user interfaces for toolbars and explorer bars utilized in conjunction with Web browsers providing streaming-media content are disclosed. In one aspect of the present invention, the graphical user interface is of a Web browser with a radio toolbar that displays one or more buttons capable of controlling a source of streaming media. The graphical user interface can also include a menu bar, a standard-buttons toolbar, an address toolbar, horizontal or vertical explorer bars, a links toolbar and/or a status bar. Abstract: A system, method and computer-readable are provided for presenting visual icons on a display screen of a computer. In one aspect of the present invention, an arrangement of certain icons forms a reference display configuration. A user may then direct the hosting computer to return a desktop image back to the reference display configuration. In another optional aspect the user may either form or reconfigure the reference display configuration by capturing a configuration of a current or previous desktop image. In still another optional aspect of the invention the user may provide input to the computer information and/or commands that enable the computer to generate a first, second or other alternate display configuration.

Abstract: A distributed computer network includes at least two computers. Each of the at least two computers runs an application sharing program to enable an image generated by one computer to be displayed by at least one other computer. At least one of the at least two computers executes an image modifying routine to alter the appearance of an image generated by the one computer prior to display on the at least one other computer. In this manner, a user of the at least one other computer can tell at a glance if an image being presented is an image that has been received from the one computer or is its own desktop graphical user interface.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of selecting buttons displayed in a graphics bar on a display screen. The entry of a first navigation command triggers the selection of a first button adjacent to the one selected in the bar. This first button is graphically highlighted. Then, the entry of a second navigation command in order to select a second button adjacent to the one previously selected triggers the selection and highlighting of a third button located in another position on the bar serving as a starting point for subsequent navigation commands. In this way, the user can skip from one button to another button located in any other location in the bar.

Abstract: An electronic “To-Do” bar is provided in which displayed upcoming tasks, meetings, appointments and the like. The customer is authenticated based on a set of a user credential and an account specific access credential. The account specific access credential is associated with the account of the customer. Requested personal identifiable information is encrypted using the public encryption key generated by the browser toolbar. Encrypted personal identifiable information is transmitted to the browser toolbar.

Abstract: Quarantining data received while a computing device is locked. While the computing device is locked, content items such as images, notifications, voice memos, telephone numbers, and the like are stored in a first memory area. The content items are transferred to a second memory area, separate from the first memory area, based on transfer criteria associated with the content items. For example, images may be automatically uploaded to a web page after the computing device is unlocked, while a mail program executes to display any messages received while the display has been locked. In some embodiments, the user inputs the content items into a locked mobile computing device and further provides the transfer criteria for the content items.

Abstract: A dynamic thumbnail corresponding to an application window is displayed that is capable of being modified based on modifications in the application window. The modifications of the dynamic thumbnail may be accomplished in real-time.
