Abstract: An apparatus and method for schedule setting in a portable terminal are provided. The apparatus includes a touch manager for determining whether a drag execution is performed for schedule setting a schedule type, a controller for performing the schedule setting on a date for schedule setting, and a schedule setting unit for setting a schedule when the touch manager detects overlapping of the date with a schedule setting icon.

Abstract: Techniques are presented to display values for a set of icons by controlling their assignment to a set of rows and their placement within these rows. A plurality of icons to be displayed is determined. An abacus attribute taking a finite set of values is associated with the set of icons. Icon groups are formed for each abacus attribute value and optionally ordered based on each of one or more sorting attributes. Inter-group indicators such as display characteristic changes, spacing and the like are determined. The inter-group indicators separate each group of icons within a row. An ordering of the icons is determined based on the abacus attribute value and the one or more optional sorting attribute values. The icons are laid out in the display space ordered by the values of the primary abacus attribute and the secondary optional sorting attributes.

Abstract: A handheld terminal includes a coordinate recognizer to recognize a first coordinate on a screen where a touch starts and to recognize a second coordinate on the screen where the touch ends, a function identifier to identify a function corresponding to the pair of coordinates, and a function performer to perform the identified function. The first and second coordinates may respectively correspond to a service icon displayed at or near the first coordinate and a process area displayed at or near the second coordinate and associated with the identified function. A method for controlling a handheld terminal includes recognizing a first coordinate on a screen where a touch starts and a second coordinate on the screen where the touch ends, identifying a function corresponding to the first coordinate and the second coordinate, and performing the identified function.

Abstract: A set of desktop icons on a graphical user interface (GUI) desktop can be selected, which marks the icons as being associated with a desktop container. In the GUI, a visual depiction that the selected desktop icons are associated with the desktop container can occur. The desktop container can be a GUI object for grouping a set of desktop icons and for manipulating a grouped set of desktop icons as a group. A user interaction with the desktop container can be received, which results in a container action being performed. The container action can affect each of the selected desktop icons and/or can affect targets to which each of the selected desktop icons point.

Abstract: The features described herein are directed to a method and system for use in a computing environment for representing files stored in stacks by using a stack icon. The stack icon may include multiple thumbnail images as top elements, and may use common characteristics among the files to define the appearance of the stack. The system may also use metadata or file characteristics (e.g., time of last edit, size, etc.) to identify one file for top representation in the stack icon. The system may additionally include an empty stack icon, a generic stack icon, property based icons, and custom thumbnail icons.

Abstract: A touch-screen device has a processor operatively coupled to a memory for storing and executing an application, and a touch-sensitive display screen for receiving a touch input for triggering a displaying of an escape key on the display screen. The displaying of the escape key can be triggered by touching the screen for a predetermined period of time, by swiping a stylus over the screen or by any other recognizable gesture. This soft escape key can thus be used to close, or escape from, an application.

Abstract: A method of displaying points of interest in a personal navigation device includes displaying a map on a display of the personal navigation device, receiving touch input at a touched position of the display, and searching an area within a search radius of the touched position for points of interest. The method also includes displaying points of interest located in the area within the search radius, where the found points of interest are represented by icons connected to their locations on the map with a line extending out from the touched position, and spreading out the icons around the touched position to separate the icons from each other.

Abstract: A system and method to provide a user with a requisite receiving device, such as cell phone, with the ability to record contact information, from an interactive advertisement for storage and later use, or, at the user's option, to obtain the information at his or her convenience even at the location of the advertisement. The invention can work accurately in any environment, including those regions where there might be heavy traffic or congestion, and a plurality of interaction signs or posters can readily interface with the recipient's device. However, an important feature of the present invention is that the user can choose to only accept that contact information that is of interest to him or her, and does not have to automatically record and/or interact with any transmitter just because it is in the sphere of influence of the receiving device.

Abstract: An application status system is described herein that informs the user about application-specific status updates and notifications through a changing status icon associated with an application-switching user interface displayed by an operating system when the application is running. When an application has focus, there is typically no way for another application to display status to the user without displaying a dialog box or a notification balloon that interrupts the user. The application status system takes advantage of the existing application-switching user interface to display a lightweight status icon overlay on the application-switching user interface itself. Thus, the application status system allows applications to provide application-specific status updates without interrupting a user's activity in another application and without adding additional UI for a user to process.

The method of searching for and executing content includes displaying at least one content icon, and identifying, if an approach to one of the at least one content icon is detected, a content icon of a position at which the approach is detected. The method further comprises determining a classification category of a content corresponding to the identified content icon, searching for at least one related content classified in the same classification category as the content corresponding to the identified content icon, displaying the identified content icon and at least one related content icon corresponding to the at least one related content using a preset display method, and executing, if one of the at least one content icon is touched, a content corresponding to the touched content icon.

An icon for each processing function which each of several devices connected to a network has is displayed on a screen, several pieces of information being managed in the document management system are listed, and a user-desired piece of information is selected among the listed plurality of pieces of information based on the user's selection operation.

Abstract: A system, method and computer-readable media for associating additional fuctionalities with a sidebar GUI of a computational device are included. An operating system may be provided that includes a sidebar software that will typically have limitations that are intended or unintended by the operating system developer. A user may wish to extend the capabilities that are associated with the sidebar in the interest of usability, efficiency and/or GUI appeal. The method of the present invention may provide a gadget which enables access to the sidebar, while associating additional capabilities with the sidebar. Alternately or additionally, a reseller of the operating system or a third party software provider, may offer software products that enable access to the functionality of the sidebar as provided by the sidebar developer, while associating additional capabilities with a display of the sidebar or an icon representative of a sidebar or sidebar functionality.

Abstract: A master application is installed on an organizational computer system to guide organizational personnel through the steps of constructing a customized database. Upon selecting a computer server and platform to host the database, organizational processes are divided into building blocks having well-defined input-output relationships. The application provides a list of organizational types and business processes in the form of modules that facilitate the construction of an organizational data flowchart that extends to all users of the system. Each user has a user identification that predetermines the ability of an end user to input data, receive reports and have other privileges associated therewith. An end user is provided with a graphical interface with the database, the graphical interface being customizable to a format chosen by the end user.

Abstract: A computer system that accesses multi-transport devices and associates device instances of the multi-transport device with each other. Devices provide the same device identifier such as a device unique identifier regardless of the transport over which the device is accessed. A visual representation for the multi-transport device may be provided to a user using the device identifier. Also, a single functional representation for the multi-transport device may be provided based on an identifier provided by each function of the device. The functional representation may be independent of the addition and removal of transports and allows abstracting device access via multiple transports from a user and an application. Transports may be selected at an application and/or a system level. Operating characteristics of available transports may be used to select a desired transport, based on transport requirements specified by the application, the user or the system.

Abstract: A system for collaboratively producing artwork includes a server and a plurality of user computers coupled to a network. The server transmits a request for submissions to collaborators and who prepare portions of the artwork using multimedia tools provided by the server computer. The collaborators transmit their completed portions of the artwork back to the server computer where they are compiled and transmitted to a recipient on a designated time.

Abstract: A system and method for integrating command shell into a graphical user interface (GUI) in order to provide a single user interface (UI), so that a user need not work in different environments for different tasks are provided. An output response from the command shell is typically one or more lines of text from an output stream such as standard error or standard output. To accomplish the integration, a user is enabled to enter shell commands from the GUI. Output responses from the commands are interpreted to determine how to represent objects in the responses. The interpretation may be by pattern matching with regular expressions. If a shell command produces lines of command output, which when interpreted (e.g. indicating a file or folder), map to some other object model (e.g. a file subsystem) in the GUI, appropriate model objects (e.g., a file or folder icon) are created and rendered into the GUI as a response to the shell command.

Abstract: A command line interface that is imbedded within a program can be implemented to any graphical user interface. An exemplary storage medium that is coupled to the processor such that the processor can read information from, and write information to, the storage medium. Herein, a method and system for providing an imbedded command line interface from within a program's graphical user interface that allows repetitive tasks to be more easily automated without the use of a mouse. The data can be formatted and filtered with only keyboard interaction such that command sequences are flexible and can be reused in the future. The method and system enable easier access to commands requiring multiple clicks and quicker command input over existing graphical user interfaces. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, the technical user can more easily share and distribute command routines and more easily diagnose issues.

Abstract: A system and method for displaying content in a browser window associated with an end-user is described. In one implementation, data that includes links is received from a content provider, each of the links is identified and encoded, and the received data along with the links are displayed in the end-user's browser window.

Abstract: In an embodiment, a modeling environment (ME) may be configured to provide a navigation widget for navigating through a model. The navigation widget may display a first hierpath where the first hierpath is associated with a path to a first portion of the model. The ME may receive input, via the navigation widget, that is associated with a second hierpath, the second hierpath being associated with a path to a second portion of the model. In response to receiving the input, the ME may display a view of the second portion of the graphical model.

Abstract: A system and a method manage, control and/or render media in a network. The system utilizes a media management application that manages, controls and/or renders digital media files in the network. A user browses, searches, manages and/or consumes content from multiple storage devices and servers in the network. The user may view a visual representation of active media connections between the available servers and/or the available rendering devices connected to the network.

Abstract: One method of the present invention includes displaying an interactive map to a consumer and recording interactions with the consumer, recording the interactions, analyzing the recordings, and acting on the analysis. The interactive map is provided at a tourist attraction or other location, and includes maps, images, cameras, and other information about the area surrounding the attraction, as well as information about other attractions, that is useful and/or interesting to a consumer. The interactive media include remote-controlled cameras, touch screen monitors, joysticks, and various other controls. Recording the interactions of the consumers includes recording touches, page views, clicks, session lengths, itineraries selected, and other interactions. Analyzing includes analyzing to find consumer preferences among locations presented.

Metadata is also applied to content sources delivering content to a search engine or personalized content engine. The metadata is used in part to determine the relative display of content objects delivered to the mobile user as search results or a personalized aggregated information resource, e.g., home page. The user may select information, from one or more entities or search results or as presented to the user in other contexts, to be automatically delivered to the user's home page as a content feed including multiple content objects or content feeds associated with an entity. Information regarding mobile user activity is compiled and used to permit publishers and advertisers to identify target candidates to receive advertisements or marketing materials.

Multiple uniform resource identifiers may be accessed upon processing of identification information associated with the contacting party's incoming communication. Communication histories associated with each uniform resource identifier may be accessed and combined to provide a party receiving the communication with a complete communication history including stored communications having differing service types.

Abstract: A system and method for providing sticky applications are provided. A “sticky application” is an operating system (OS) level application that has the ability to “stick” to web applications and become a part of the web page on which the web application is running. While the sticky application is stuck to the web application, it behaves as if it were a web application with respect to the user. When the user chooses to “unstick” the application, it will return to behaving as an OS level application. The sticky application imitates being a web-based application instead of an operating system level application while stuck. This imitation involves the sticky application being placed on pixel coordinates within a web page of the web application and the sticky application remaining in the pixel coordinates within the web page where it is placed even when a user modifies the representation of the web page.

Abstract: Methods for simultaneous exchange of sensitive personal information between two unrelated parties are disclosed, such as between two users of an online networking website or introductory meeting website, the information being mutually accessible to both users upon exchange. The invention allows for exchange of sensitive personal information between two parties only if both parties indicate a willingness to participate in such exchange. A host data server facilitates information exchanges, otherwise protecting the sensitive personal information. This invention is particularly useful for online dating websites, where the sensitive personal information may include personal photographs or phone numbers. In preferred embodiments, the exchange of sensitive personal information occurs simultaneously, and the sensitive personal information can be simultaneously presented to the two parties.

Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that facilitates invoking a command. During operation, the system suggests with a graphic element a gesture to use to invoke a command. The system then receives the gesture from a user at a device. Note that the gesture is received via an input mechanism, and also note that the gesture is a predetermined manipulation of the input mechanism. The system then determines a graphic element within the user interface that is associated with the gesture. Finally, upon determining the object associated with the gesture, the system invokes the command associated with the graphic element.

The complete thread is returned to the first requesting user, after permission has been sought and granted, and after data mining and intelligent aggregation of a plurality of relevant threads in to one interleaved result is performed and returned to the first requesting user.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a launching engine configured to automatically launch a Web site and load an electronic document responsive to a launching event for the electronic document. The launching engine can be a component of a computer operating system (e.g., MAC OS, OS/2, WINDOWS XP, etc.) or a graphics management component (e.g., KDE, GNOME, etc.) of a computer. A launching event can be initiated by user selection of a document icon, a user selection of an electronic document from a file management application, a launching script for the electronic document triggered by a media insertion action, and the like.

Abstract: A system and method for creating and using configuration diagrams for configuring distributed systems. The methods described herein may be used for various types of operations in configuring distributed systems, including creating programs, managing programs in the distributed system, deploying programs to various distributed devices, configuring remote execution or inter-operation of distributed programs, and executing distributed applications. Embodiments of the invention utilize graphical iconic-based techniques for performing the above operations. The configuration diagram may include device icons which represent devices and program icons which represent programs. Device icons and program icons may be associated with each other to accomplish various program creation and deployment operations. Device icons and program icons may also interact with graphical program nodes or icons. Context sensitive device connections and/or program connections are displayed.

In an embodiment, the method comprises: uniquely identifying a communication device to which the pushed web content is to be delivered; establishing a pushed web content service linking the pushed web content to the communication device; receiving a pushed web content service request; and permitting delivery of content to the communication device via the pushed web content service based on verification of the identity of a trusted pushed web content provider. The method may further comprise uniquely identifying the pushed web content provider with an assignable unique pushed web content identification.

Abstract: Methods and systems are described for allowing a user to quickly determine parts of a media item in which the user will be interested. In the methods and systems described, a timeline is provided for the media item and semantic icons are used as media landmarks along the timeline. The semantic icons are related to the content or a description of the content at the location in the media item corresponding to the semantic icon's location on the timeline. The semantic icons, in addition to providing some immediate contextual information at a glance, also allow a user access to annotations of the media item. Semantic icons can represent tags, users who have created or modified annotations for the segment of the media item, or other relevant information. The semantic icons may also be used to determine a relative level of interest in different parts of the media item both with respect to the user and with respect to other users.

Abstract: Described is a system and a computer program product for visually delineating a relationship between diverse, but related graphical objects in a graphical user interface. An icon that has specified color scheme is associated with the diverse, but related but graphical objects. When one of the related graphical objects is displayed, the icon is displayed within the displayed graphical object. The persistence of the icon with the specified color scheme in the displayed graphical objects allows them to be recognized as related. In a particular instance, the icon is displayed with each graphical object in a series of graphical objects that represent an evolution of progression of development.

Abstract: An apparatus generates operation-history information including content-group information relating to a content group and operation information relating to the content group, and stores the operation-history information in a storage unit. The apparatus determines, when a content is selected, whether the operation-history information stored in the storage unit includes operation-history information including content-group information relating to a group including the selected content, and displays a GUI component including the content-group information included in the operation-history information and the operation information when it is determined that the operation-history information including the content-group information relating to the group including the selected content exists.

Abstract: Methods and systems are described for displaying input items on a display. In one embodiment, a first activation of a button representing a displayable input item is detected. Responsive to the first activation of the button, the displayable input item is displayed on a display at an initial display size without accepting selection of the displayable input item. The displayable input item is incrementally enlarged on the display over time until detecting a second activation of the button. Selection of the displayable input item is accepted responsive to the second activation of the button. The initial display size is set for the displayable input item based on a display size of the displayable input item when the second activation of the button is detected.

Abstract: An invention is disclosed for achieving “image globalization” through dynamic text generation and manipulation by independently translating textual elements within a graphic image into different languages (or other domains of use). This concept can be used in creating multiple text-containing graphic images (each customized for a specific domain of use) from an initial template or master image of any type.
