Abstract: A system may include a selection tool configured to determine a selection of a file icon that is displayed on a user interface and that represents a file associated with an application. The selection tool may be further configured to determine a result-class associated with the selection. A parser may be configured to determine one or more rules associated with the result-class, access content of the file by way of an application program interface associated with the application, and parse the content of the file for a target-result, based on the result-class and the one or more rules. Presentation logic may be configured to provide at least a portion of the target-result in visual proximity to the file icon within the user interface.

Abstract: A method of executing a function on a standby screen of a mobile terminal capable of executing various functions on a standby screen by selecting a function icon displayed on the standby screen is provided. The method of executing a function on a standby screen of a mobile terminal includes displaying at least one function icon on the standby screen; selecting a displayed function icon; displaying a preview of a function connected to the selected function icon on the standby screen; and executing the function connected to the preview by selecting the preview. Therefore, the user can easily and quickly execute a function connected to a function icon on the standby screen by selecting the function icon, so that provision of a dedicated key can be minimized.

Abstract: A multimedia viewing booth is disclosed that includes a computer terminal with a touchscreen, a CPU, a payment processor and a digital media I/O unit. The touchscreen displays a certain number of icons with each icon linked to predetermined content. A first portion of the icons is linked to a first type of content and a second portion is linked to a second type of content. The touchscreen displays a GUI with a selection menu for a user to select content, inform the user whether payment is needed, what content is available, how much time for viewing is available, display the selected content, and to interact with the user. The CPU manages the system to accept payment via the payment processor, control the touchscreen, process user interaction and function accordingly, access and activate content display, manages content purchases and downloads via the I/O unit, and interfaces with a communication link to access content.

Abstract: A multifunctional apparatus is capable of switching between a standard operation mode in which a Web service layer stops operating and an OS mode in which the Web service layer operates. In the OS mode, the multifunctional apparatus informs an external control apparatus of pressed-hardware-button information indicative of a pressed hardware button detected by a user interface layer. In the control apparatus, an event process section reads out, from a shortcut button storage section, process-contents information corresponded with button identification information indicative of the hardware button indicated by the pressed-hardware-button information, and a device control section transmits, to the multifunctional apparatus, a control instruction for executing a device process indicated by the process-contents information.

Abstract: Annotation techniques are provided. In one aspect, a method for processing a computer-based material is provided. The method comprises the following steps. The computer-based material is presented. One or more portions of the computer-based material are determined to be of interest to a user. The one or more portions are annotated to permit return to the one or more portions at a later time. In another aspect, a user interface is provided. The user interface comprises a computer-based material; a viewing focal area encompassing a portion of the computer-based material; and one or more indicia associated with and annotating the portion of the computer-based material.

Abstract: A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system that tracks tags in real-time based on EPC codes and on other priority codes written into transponder memory fields of the tags. As an example, a priority code may be written into a memory of an RFID transponder identifying a high-value item or a small high-value item that is likely to be stolen. Based on the use of this priority code, those items can be preferentially tracked as opposed to items of low value or size such that they are unlikely to be stolen. Such use of priority codes and local filtering alleviates the need to go back to large centralized databases associating unique numbers with other parameters and potentially the history of the item.

Abstract: A method and system for non-sequential access to fields in a window, document, form or template. When the window, document, form or template is opened for user input, the user activates the non-sequential mode of operation, such as by hitting a particular keystroke or sequence of keystrokes. Once the non-sequential mode of operation is activated, indicia appear in each of the possible input fields. The indicia indicate to the user what they must do in order to immediately move the cursor to that field, to effectuate moving the window focus to the desired field.

Abstract: A configurable controlling device and associated editor program that allows a consumer to create on a personal computer for downloading to the controlling device a user interface comprised of user interface pages having icons which icons, when activated on the controlling device, cause the controlling device to perform a function, such as to transmit a command to an appliance, to change the user interface page being displayed, etc. The editor program allows for the visualization of links created between user interface pages, single step assigning of commands to logical groups of function keys (both iconic and hard keys), single step assigning of backgrounds to groups of user interface pages, and pre-rendering of user interface pages prior to the downloading of the user interface to the controlling device.

Abstract: An icon or file is provided to facilitate communications across a network. The icon or file represents a contact or set of contacts and is separate from the communications program's user interface. At least one action is executed in response to an operation performed on the icon or a command issued to the file. The actions may generally include, for example, retrieving profile information about the contact, setting an alert to indicate that the contact's network/login status has changed (e.g., login, logout, or idle), or performing communications with the contact. The action may be the same action that would be executed in response to an operation performed on a representation of the contact or set of contacts in a user interface of a communications program.

Abstract: The present invention is a pocket-sized, portable computing apparatus that performs frequently used laboratory calculations, provides a look-up function for commonly used data and procedures, and provides note-taking and data capture for record-keeping. The present invention displays data in a form that a chemist finds most convenient and manipulates this data with functions a chemist typically utilizes in his work. In addition, the present invention provides a user interface that is compatible with traditional methods for formula manipulations and chemistry workflows and that increases the efficiency of the user in performing laboratory tasks.

Abstract: A browsing method encoded on a computer-readable medium is provided. The method creates customized summaries of web pages and comprises multiple steps. In a first step, from a thematic or project-based listing of URL links, a selected URL link is activated. In a second step, a tour creation dialog is opened. In a third step, the user is presented with a menu option that enables the user to identify an existing tour or create a new tour. In a fourth step, if the user identifies an existing tour, the URL so selected is added into this existing tour. In a fifth step, if the user chooses to create a new tour, an input window is presented to the user that prompts the user to input a tour name. In a sixth step, once the user inputs the tour name, the new tour is saved.

Abstract: Methods are provided for configuring and invoking command sequences from a remote control (RC) keystroke in a multimedia system of networked devices. The configuring method comprises: selecting a multimedia configuration menu; selecting an RC key; selecting a multimedia command to associate with the RC key; selecting a multimedia source associated with the multimedia command; selecting a multimedia destination associated with the multimedia command; in response to associating multimedia commands with RC keys, generating an RC key map cross-referencing RC keys to multimedia commands; and, storing the RC key map in permanent memory.

Abstract: A method for navigating within a multi-level hierarchical collapsing menu structure is disclosed. Each level in the menu structure contains plural items, each item being at least one of a function, a pointer to a location, and a pointer to another level. The method of the present invention includes a step of providing a graphical user menu system displaying the items of a given level and enabling selection thereof, wherein access of the given level requires sequential access of each of the levels preceding the given level in the hierarchy. An Active Path is dynamically constructed as a sequence of active links as items are selected using the graphical user menu system, with one active link correspond to each of the items selected. The active links provide direct access to a function corresponding level or menu item without the need to navigate using the graphical user menu system.

Abstract: The invention provides a file processing apparatus, with which files can be selected easily when subjecting files to a predetermined process. A window W that is displayed during file processing is partitioned into three regions, namely a file display window W1, a selected file display window W2, and an execution icon display window W3. While ascertaining the contents of the files in a predetermined folder and comparing among the files with the icons displayed as thumbnails in the file display window W1, the user can select files to be processed by double-clicking. Once a file has been selected, it is displayed as an icon in the window W2, so that file selection can be performed easily and accurately while scrolling down the window, for example. After the file selection is terminated, a process can be executed, for example by double-clicking a process icon displayed in the window W3.

Abstract: A commanding system for a computer. An input sequence can be received from an input device, and the commanding system can be used to connect the input to an associated action. Commanding can be provided by a plurality of nodes that represent elements of control and application levels. The nodes can be arranged in a hierarchical structure, and each node can include a table of bindings. A service can be attached to one or more of the nodes at run-time to provide additional commanding functionality. For example, a service can modify or supplement the binding entries provided in the table of bindings associated with a given node.

Abstract: Automatic assignment of shortcut keys for launching applications or for providing other commands is provided based on the position of corresponding application listings or shortcuts in a menu. The menu may include an applications menu, such as a start menu. The menu may also include an application launch bar listing applications that may be launched therefrom by selecting the respective application, or by entering shortcut keys that are automatically assigned based on the position of the application listing on the launch bar. Methods are provided for assigning application launch shortcut keys, for identifying assigned shortcut keys, for modifying shortcut keys, and for using shortcut keys for instantiating or switching applications.

Abstract: A system and computer-based method for permitting a computer system to access a network location using a browser application by activating a desktop icon. The system comprises a first computer readable program code means for causing the computer system to display a desktop icon associated with a file containing a network address corresponding to the network location. When the desktop icon is activated, a second computer usable program code means causes the computer to launch an instance of a browser application or a new window for a currently executing browser application and a third computer usable program code means causes the computer system to pass the network address to the browser application, thereby accessing the network location.

Abstract: According to the present invention, a plurality of data items are displayed in different display forms corresponding to attributes of the data items in a list by recording a computer-readable recording medium with a data item list display program for causing a computer to display the data items in the different display forms in the list, the display forms corresponding to the respective attributes of the data items. Therefore, a data item can be displayed in the same display format in a list of data items of different attributes and in a list of data items of a single attribute, thus allowing users to easily understand the lists without confusion.

Abstract: A system and method for organizing short-cut icons on an electronic display device utilizing a virtual filing cabinet for storing the icons to reduce clutter and confusion on large electronic device screens, and enable organized storage of the icons to be accessed at will for smaller device display screens. At the time of creation, and at any later time, every icon can be deposited into the virtual filing cabinet with a user defined directory structure or the icon can be left displayed on the display device. A data field allows device user or the program-installer to enter a brief notation regarding the nature, functionality, and the name of the program, file, or data represented by the short-cut icon. An icon displayed on the display device screen can be deposited into virtual filing cabinet at any later time, at will, and can be called forth onto the display screen, at any later time, at will.

Abstract: In a method for storing and accessing electronic content (e.g. for a Website), content objects are stored in a structured manner in a content store. Some of the content objects in the content store are identified as shortcuts, pointing to other objects in the content store. When a shortcut is accessed, the target object pointed to by that shortcut is automatically accessed from the content store and returned in place of the shortcut object. This provides a powerful way of structuring websites and other forms of content delivery.

Abstract: A shortcut key manager and method is provided for managing shortcut key assignment to non-command user interface items. In response to receipt of an item identification that identifies a non-command user interface item type and a key identification that identifies a shortcut key, the shortcut key is assigned to the non-command user interface item type that defines the non-command item. When the shortcut key is input, an instance of the non-command user interface item is presented to the user in response to the user input of the shortcut key.

Abstract: Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that display hidden software options to a user. The GUIs described herein contain an instrumentality, for example an icon, which a user can activate which produces a separate drop down menu that lists at least some of the options that may be hidden to the user, but that are available. This removes the need for the user to search through the software or manuals for the software to determine where the options may be found if not visually apparent on the GUI.
