    Abstract: An apparatus for chamfering through press forming edges of a rim element is provided upstream of a flaring machine for forming a rim shape on a disk wheel manufacture line. The apparatus includes a pair of edge rolls having vertically extending axes and having respective groove members formed therein. A wall of a rim element conveyed into the apparatus is axially squeezed between the edge rolls at the groove members thereof and the edges of the rim element is press formed. Since a rim element conveyed into the apparatus has still an axially straight extending wall, the rim element has a high rigidity in the axial direction of the rim element and therefore, an undesirable deformation does not occur in the rim element during the press forming.

    Abstract: An apparatus for forming tapered threads to a workpiece such as a pipe comprises a casing and a supporting member attached to one side of the casing, and three support plates rotatably attached to the supporting member. Roller members or cam members are secured to the support plates, respectively, to be rotatable with respect thereto and rolling dies are also secured to the support plates. The rolling dies are rotated by an electric motor through a power transmission mechanism. The workpiece is inserted into a space defined by the supporting dies to be subjected to the roll-forming operation.

Two driven pairs of friction rollers can be pressed against a wheel rim circumference with the friction rollers of each pair being arranged to pivot parallel to the axis of the wheel set. A drive motor has first and second smooth belt drives having a common drive wheel driven by the motor. Each belt drive has an output wheel driving an input gear of a spur gear system. Two spur gear systems have upward members respectively driving the friction rollers. The output of each belt drive is coaxially arranged with the axis of its associated friction roller.

    Abstract: An improved gear burnisher for removing minor gear tooth defects by burnishing is provided by rotating the work gear to be burnished in mesh with three different burnihing gears, at least one of which is powered. The improvement consists of burnishing the work gear with one burnishing gear that has a low operating pressure angle, another that has a high operating pressure angle and a third burnishing gear that has an intermediate operating pressure angle. The third also preferably has a generated pressure angle that is 0.5 degrees or more greater than the generated pressure angle of the work gear to provide a concentrated radial pressure sliding load at the tips of the teeth of the work gear.

    Abstract: A stepped shaft is rough-formed at a single work station by means of separate sets of rolls operating sequentially to rough-form shaft portions of different diameters. A first set of rolls operates to reduce the diameter of the entire workpiece to approximately the desired major diameter of the finished stepped shaft. Other sets of rolls operate to further reduce the diameters of selected portions of the shaft. In preferred practice the workpiece is pre-heated to a suitable work temperature and the entire rolling sequence is carried out rapidly to produce a rough-formed stepped shaft which will require a minimum of further machining.

    Abstract: A process for making a light-weight, heavy duty steel piston for a disc brake. The initial blank is formed to include the piston nose radii and angle. The blank is then simultaneously rolled by three rollers, one of which rollers forms the piston boot groove, another of which rollers maintains the outer diameter of the main portion of the piston, and the other roller of which forms near the outer end of the piston an overall diameter which is less than the main overall diameter. During the rolling step, the metal deforms to form a contour opposite the base of the piston boot groove such that the thickness of the wall between the contour and the base of the piston boot groove is smaller than the thickness of the main portion of the wall, but yet is strong enough to withstand heavy duty disc brake operation throughout the life of the disc brakes.

    Abstract: Hollow bodies are produced from deformable plane or conically shaped blanks by rotating the blanks about an axis extending at least approximately through the cross-sectional center of gravity of the hollow body to be formed and simultaneously forming undulations in the blank. The undular shaping involves continuous formation of a propagating wave having a directional component extending in a circumferential direction, with the wave being transposed by repeated undular shaping in a direction generally radially of the body to be formed. The waves are transposed exclusively parallel to the original plane of the blank and in a single directional sense toward the hollow body to be formed. In the formation process, the material is worked out of its original plane in a deflection zone annularly surrounding the cross-sectional center of gravity of the hollow body in the formation of the hollow body wall.

    Abstract: Apparatus and a method for use thereof to remove surface defects from a formed workpiece having a rotary axis about which the workpiece is designed to rotate. A plurality of rotary tools, preferably three, of the apparatus are rotatably mounted in spaced relationship to each other to receive the workpiece there-between in engagement therewith during rotation of the tools and the workpiece. Pressure applied to each of the tools independently of each other tool maintains an engaged condition between the tool and the workpiece while allowing outward tool movement upon engagement with a surface defect such that the rotary workpiece axis remains at a fixed location. Extendable and retractable hydraulic cylinders are preferably utilized to apply the pressure between the tools and the workpiece and the engagement therebetween is at intermeshed teeth thereof so as to remove surface defects from the workpiece teeth. Each cylinder includes a bore and an undersized piston received within the bore.

    Abstract: The invention concerns an apparatus for forming annular circumferential corrugations in the end of a helically corrugated seamed pipe. Two corrugating rolls, a backup roll and a thrust roll, engage the wall of the pipe to form the annular corrugations. The backup roll normally engages the inner wall of the pipe, and the thrust roll, the outer wall. The thrust roll is formed from a plurality of independent and transversely movable roll sections urged with a predetermined force into engagement with the pipe by a support composed of a group of rolls engaging the periphery of a corresponding roll section and mounted within a pivotable lever frame. The predetermined force is provided by a pressure-controlled hydraulic cylinder acting through each of the lever frames.
