Abstract: A method for manufacturing exhaust gas ducting devices provides each device with an outer housing having an insert clamped therein, wherein the insert comprises a substrate traversed by exhaust gas, and an elastic compensating element surrounding the substrate. The method includes spreading each individual compensating element on a base and deforming the compensating element substantially vertical to the base by exerting a pressure such that the entire compensating element is subjected to a full-surface load. Then a setpoint deformation of the compensating element is determined, which is necessary to achieve a specified setpoint pressure. The method further includes determining at least one parameter of the substrate individually, placing the compensating element around the substrate, and mounting the insert thus obtained in an outer housing having inside dimensions that correspond to outside dimensions of the insert with the determined setpoint deformation.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a forming method and a forming machine in which in forming e.g., a round steel pipe, predetermined forming can be performed with less additional deformation imparted to a workpiece without deteriorating the productivity of the conventional roll forming, thereby manufacturing a high-quality product with high dimension precision. To achieve this object, the present invention provides a forming method and a forming machine, which adopt a rotating unit which rotatably moves on an endless track a die train having dies with outwardly directed and swingable forming passes in a breakdown step at an early forming stage, and in which the forming pass of each die holds the edge of the workpiece to rotatably move the die by changing the die to a predetermined angle, thereby realizing bending, so that problems due to twisting onto forming rolls and high locally-caused contact stress can be greatly reduced.

  • Patent number: 6968719
Abstract: A machine may produce a tube having textured internal and external surfaces in a single operation. Inner and outer knurling tools may form the textured surfaces. The texturing of the internal and external surfaces may be helical patterns of ribs and grooves. The height of the ribs formed in the internal and external surfaces may be less than about 35 mils. The angles of the patterns relative to a longitudinal axis of the tube may be less than about 45°. The angle of the helical pattern allows textured tubes to be used as heat exchanger elements wherein flow is directed substantially coaxial to the longitudinal axes of the tubes. The helical pattern formed in the external surface may be oriented in a right hand or left hand helical orientation. Similarly, the helical pattern formed in the internal surface may be oriented in a right hand or left hand orientation.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming grooves in a pipe for receiving mechanical pipe clamps are disclosed. The apparatus includes a holding fixture for securing the pipe and a carriage rotatably mounted on the holding fixture. Two arms are pivotably mounted on the carriage and extend on opposite sides of the pipe. Each arm has a grooving roller rotatably mounted thereon. An actuator connects the arms and forces the grooving rollers into engagement with the pipe. The carriage, arms, actuator and grooving rollers are rotated about the pipe in an orbit to form the circumferential groove. The method steps include forcing the grooving roller into the surface of the pipe at a fixed rate per revolution of the grooving rollers about the pipe in the orbit.

Abstract: A tool for preparing pipes for coupling using mechanical couplings is disclosed. The tool has a movable roller pivotally attached to a body, a tapered roller rotatably attached to the body and a plurality of tool rollers rotatably mounted on a carriage slidable within the body. Each tool roller has a chamfering flange, a grooving flange and a textured, surface for chamfering the pipe end, forming a groove in the pipe end and marking the pipe end. The carriage is movable to position a tool roller at a predetermined distance from the pipe centerline. The tapered roller and the movable roller support the pipe end at an equiangular spacing from the tool roller. The movable roller is actuated by a jackscrew to forcibly engage the tool roller with the pipe end as the tool is rotated about the pipe end circumference to form the chamfer, the groove and an insertion depth mark.

Abstract: A method of reducing slot width in slotted tubular liners. A slotted tubular liner (1) is provided having an interior surface (3), an exterior surface (2) and a plurality of slots (4) extending between the interior surface and the exterior surface. One or more contoured rigid forming tools (7) are provided. Pressure is applied to either the interior surface (3) or the exterior surface (2) of the slotted tubular liner (1) with the contoured rigid forming tools (7). The contoured rigid forming tools are then moved in a sweep pattern traversing either the interior surface or the exterior surface of the slotted tubular liner, until plastic deformation narrows the width of the plurality of slots (4) to within desired tolerances. The method does not require the same precise positioning of previously known methods and, as such, provides a combination of increased output and lower cost.

Abstract: A method is provided for forming a catalytic converter that includes a catalyst substrate having a noncircular circumference and surrounded by a metal housing. The catalyst substrate is initially measured to determine the radial dimension of the substrate circumference relative to a central axis. The substrate is wrapped in a compressible mat and arranged within a metal tube. The arrangement is subjected to a spin-forming process that forms the metal tube about the catalyst substrate. The spin-forming process includes rotating the metal tube about the substrate axis, while concurrently urging a metal-forming tool against the metal tube. The metal-forming tool is programmed to follow a metal-forming path corresponding to the substrate circumference plus a predetermined radial distance. In this manner, a metal housing is formed having a noncircular circumference corresponding in shape to the catalyst substrate and spaced apart by a uniform insulative layer.
