  • Patent number: 5704241
Abstract: An apparatus and method is shown for reforming the bottom of a container. The container is supported during processing by a container holder. A number of tooling rams each have a reforming roller supported by a pivot roller shaft that is in turn connectedly pinned to one end of a pivot arm. The opposite end of the pivot arm is connectedly pinned to an eccentric lug on a pivot base that is connected to a tooling drive shaft. The reforming roller is restrained axially by roller guide disks mounted to the tooling rams and is driven by the pivot arm such that the reforming roller travels along a circular orbital path of varying diameter in a plane perpendicular to the central axis of the pivot roller shaft and having a center of curvature position coextensive with the container axis. The tooling drive shaft is supported rotatably in and moved axially with a tooling ram that moves axially toward or away from the container.

Abstract: A procedure and an apparatus for forming a rectangular collar at the end of a pipe (34) by shaping it includes a forming element (1) which is moved in the axial direction of the pipe towards the pipe and rotated along the interior surface of the pipe end about the longitudinal axis of the pipe. The forming cone (1) is moved in the axial direction of the pipe towards the pipe so that, as it moves towards the pipe, the forming element (1) is automatically turned from an initial position to a final position by the thrust producing the movement, simultaneously forming the pipe end so as to produce a collar substantially rectangular with respect to the direction of the longitudinal axis of the pipe.

Abstract: A procedure and an apparatus for forming a rectangular collar at the end of a pipe (16) shape the pipe using a forming element (8) which is moved in the axial direction of the pipe (16) towards the pipe (16) and rotated along the edge surface of the pipe end about the longitudinal axis of the pipe. In the procedure, a conical collar is first produced, whereupon the forming element (8) is moved in the axial direction of the pipe away from the pipe (16) and turned to a position where its forming face is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe, whereupon a rectangular collar is formed.

  • Patent number: 5222385
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reforming the bottom of a drawn and ironed or a drawn beverage container, and a container made by that method. The container for which this method and apparatus are suitable has a vertical axis; a generally cylindrical side wall parallel with the vertical axis; an outer annular wall; a convex U-shaped portion; a preformed bottom wall including a center domed portion; and an annular, substantially vertical wall joining the domed portion and the convex U-shaped portion. The method comprises supporting the container in a jig, the jig having a bottom peripheral profile portion substantially corresponding in shape to the outer annular wall of the container. The bottom peripheral profile portion of the jig is then mated with the outer annular wall. A reforming roller is brought into engagement with the substantially vertical wall. The reforming roller rotates along the vertical wall and about an arcuate path, affecting the angle of the substantially vertical wall.

The apparatus includes an adjusting screw threadably mounted into a threaded body member having one or more balls mounted in apertures in the body member. The body member is inserted into one end of the hollow tubing, the balls being disposed inside of the body member between a reduced diameter portion of the screw and the inner wall of the body member. When the screw is threaded into the body member, the balls are forced outwardly against the inner wall of the tubing forming a raised bead on the exterior of the tubing. Abstract: A method and apparatus for rolling tubes into tube plates, especially heat exchangers, with a tube roller. Prior to the rolling process, the desired holding expansion value is set, and during the rolling process the holding expansion is measured. When the preset expansion value is reached, the expansion is discontinued. The magnitude of the holding expansion is determined by ultrasonically measuring the changing thickness of the wall of the tube during the expansion. The apparatus includes a tube roller that is operated by a drive mechanism. Also provided is a roll controller that can be set to the desired holding expansion value. An ultrasonic measuring head is provided in the tube roller, and is connected with the roll controller.
