Patent number: 7143619Abstract: While a material pipe and a roller are revolved relative to each other with a predetermined radius, the material pipe and the roller are moved relative to each other in the direction of progress of forming by eccentrically moving the center axis of the material pipe and the revolution axis of the roller relative to each other and simultaneously moving the material pipe and the roller relative to each other in the directions of the axis. During movement in the direction of progress of the forming, an end portion of the material pipe is deflected by controlling the axis-direction moving portion so that the roller is moved relative to the material pipe in the direction of the axis when the circumferential position of the roller, with respect to a circumference of the material pipe, changes from an inner side of the direction of deflection toward an outer side of the direction of deflection.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2002Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Junji Morikawa, Masashi Onuma

Patent number: 7131305Abstract: A method and apparatus for spin forming a portion of a workpiece includes at least two rollers rotatable about a spin axis. Each one of the rollers is axially and radially offset from the others. An axial drive mechanism reciprocates the rollers or workpiece to causes the first roller and then the second roller to sequentially engage the workpiece. A higher reduction ratio is achieved which enables improved efficiency. The present invention reduces floor space requirements as the forming operation may be completed on a single machine.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: November 7, 2006Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Egas Jose Desousa, John C. Boehnke, James M. Ciosek, Frederick D. Wagner

Patent number: 7114358Abstract: A method and apparatus for expanding a free end of a tube by use of a fluted spinning tool. The fluted spinning tool of the present invention, when rotated at a predetermined speed into the free end of the tube, produces a combination of force, rotation, and heat which results in uniform expansion of the free end of the tube. Further, the fluted spinning tool of the present invention allows for the rapid and efficient production of expanded tube parts, such parts being evenly formed with minimal bias on the expanded free ends of the tubes.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2004Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Arrow Fabricated Tubing, Ltd.Inventor: Kenneth R. Patent number: 7021101Abstract: A method and apparatus utilizing a radial rolling process to cold form rings on a lead battery terminal with undercuts or overhangs to improve the sealing properties of the rings. The apparatus includes a fixture configured to securely position the battery terminal beneath a rolling station. The rolling station includes a radial rolling spindle having a plurality of cam shaped rollers configured to transform at least one ring on the battery terminal from having an initial rectangular cross-sectional shape into a desired arrowhead cross-sectional shape when the terminal and cold metal forming member are rotated relative to each other. A drive assembly is configured to rotate the battery terminal and radial rolling head relative to each other.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2003Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Tulip CorporationInventor: Bernard N. Patent number: 6990841Abstract: A method and apparatus for spin forming a portion of a workpiece where the formed portion has a formed axis that is non-coaxial with the non-processed axis of the workpiece includes at least two rollers rotatable about a spin axis. Each one of the rollers is axially and radially offset from the others. An axial drive mechanism reciprocates the rollers or workpiece to causes the first roller and then the second roller to sequentially engage the workpiece. A pivoting mechanism rotates the rollers or workpiece about a pivot point from a first angular position to a second angular position during a forming operation to create a formed portion that is oblique to the non-processed portion or is substantially curved. A higher reduction ratio is achieved which enables improved efficiency. The present invention reduces floor space requirements as the forming operation may be completed on a single machine.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: January 31, 2006Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Egas Jose Desousa, John C. Boehnke, James M. Ciosek, Frederick D. Wagner

Patent number: 6935152Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming grooves in a pipe for receiving mechanical pipe clamps are disclosed. The apparatus includes a holding fixture for securing the pipe and a carriage rotatably mounted on the holding fixture. Two arms are pivotably mounted on the carriage and extend on opposite sides of the pipe. Each arm has a grooving roller rotatably mounted thereon. An actuator connects the arms and forces the grooving rollers into engagement with the pipe. The carriage, arms, actuator and grooving rollers are rotated about the pipe in an orbit to form the circumferential groove. The method steps include forcing the grooving roller into the surface of the pipe at a fixed rate per revolution of the grooving rollers about the pipe in the orbit.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2003Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Victaulic Company of AmericaInventors: Douglas R. Patent number: 6915943Abstract: A line-up clamp unit is powered by a diesel engine which drives a hydraulic pump for operating hydraulic equipment in the unit. The unit includes a line-up clamp which has front shoes, rear shoes and expanding copper back-up tiles. Drive wheels are deployed by a hydraulic cylinder and operated by a hydraulic drive motor. A group of aligning assemblies are electrically operated and fiction to extend L-shaped members to beyond the diameter of the pipe being welded so that the unit can be automatically positioned at the end of a pipe section. A control box includes a radio receiver for receiving control signals and producing corresponding electric control commands for operating the line-tip unit. A remote control radio transmitter has operating, mechanisms, including push buttons and toggle switches, for operating the line-up unit, including the engine, drive motor, brakes, line-up clamp and aligners.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 2002Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: CRC-Evans Pipeline International, Inc.Inventor: Brian Scott Laing
