A plastically deformable sheet of material is clamped to the die so that the material is tangent to the die at a tangent area. A forming path is defined that follows the part's outside surface definition beginning at a point adjacent to the tangent area and tracing around the tangent area in circuits that incrementally offset away from the tangent area until all of the outside surface of the part is traced. A forming tool is then moved along the forming path so that the end of the forming tool presses the sheet material against the die thereby gradually forming the sheet material against the die to produce a finished formed part.

    Abstract: A push-type expandable fixture provided to secure a work-piece to a rotatable machine. An expandable sleeve is inserted within a bore of a hollow work-piece. The work-piece together with the expandable sleeve is disposed about a pair of wedge members which are in turn secured to a first rotatable portion of the machine. The wedge members engage a corresponding tapered internal surface of the expandable sleeve. The second wedge member is longitudinally displaceable relative to the first wedge member and together extends through the work-piece to engage a second rotatable portion of the machine. As the first and second rotatable portions of the machine are brought toward one another, the wedge members act on the tapered surfaces of the sleeve forcing the sleeve to radially expand and firmly grip the work-piece. The arrangement provides the ability to firmly secure a work-piece to a rotatable machine tool by a simple push-type action without the need to induce compression forces on the work-piece.

A collar or cup having a circumferential side wall sized to receive the pipe is mounted on the fixed support adjacent to the support surfaces and radially reinforces the pipe to prevent it from collapsing or going out of round during groove formation.

    Abstract: A tool for reducing the diameter of the center conductor of a coaxial cable allowing it to mate with a smaller receptacle without the necessity of a reducer. The tool uses plural rollers within a housing to roll form the conductor as they rotate about it. Preferably the rollers are caged for alignment but bear on the inner surface of the housing. The housing thus resists the axial loads on the rollers and transmits the rotational drive force directly to the rollers allowing the roller cage to serve solely alignment purposes. The roller cage incorporates an extended nose designed to contact the dielectric portion of the cable, serving as a depth stop. An optional indicator sleeve is visible through openings in the housing and indicates the position of the roller cage within the housing. A small lead angle on the rollers causes them to self feed onto the conductor and to crawl rearward within the chamber which provide the indication of the length of conductor reduced.

The ram is then screwed onto the casing to bring the bending groove onto the cut upper can sidewall, thereby bending a rolled lip on the can sidewall.     Abstract: A method of forming a joint between a workable tubing of a first diameter and a tubing of a second, larger diameter proceeds with the formation of a bell in the end of the workable tubing. The workable tubing is clamped, with the end of the workable tubing located in a cavity of a die. A mandrel is spun, and inserted into the end of the workable tubing. The mandrel has a pilot tip, and a forming land. The forming land expands the end of the workable tubing as the mandrel is spun. A bell is formed in the workable tubing, which has an outer diameter substantially equal to the inner diameter of the second, larger tubing. The workable tubing is freed from the clamp and die, and the bell is inserted into the second, larger tubing. The two tubes are brazed, without need for a bushing.

    Abstract: A roller burnishing tool is disclosed having inner and outer pluralities of concentrically disposed, precision tapered rolls. A precision tapered annular mandrel is disposed within the inner plurality of rolls and operates to controllably urge the inner plurality of rolls outwardly against a lip of a workpiece inserted between the inner and outer pluralities of rolls. The inner plurality of rolls forces the lip outwardly into contact with the outer rolls, and the pressurized contact of the rolls effects a burnishing action on the surfaces of the lip of the workpiece. In a preferred embodiment, the burnishing tool also includes a pilot stop for receiving an alignment post used to align the workpiece with the burnishing tool.
