Each necking station includes an annular necking die and a platform and punch which are cam-operated to move towards and away from each other and are maintained in engagement with the cams by pressurized fluid. Each necking station also has a container pressurizing means in the form of an annular chamber which acts as a holding chamber prior to transmitting the pressurized fluid into the container.

    Abstract: Plane, rectangular sheets (10) are moved through between a driven bending roll (32) and a plurality of back-up rolls (34) and are bent round the bending roll (32) by these rolls and a plurality of pressure rolls (52, 56) disposed behind the bending roll (32) and back-up rolls (34). The almost completely rounded sheet (10) is bent resiliently away from the bending roll (32) by a deflecting member (62) as a result of which the front edge (10a) of the sheet is prevented from re-entering the gap between the bending roll (32) and the back-up rolls (34) before the rear edge (10b) of the sheet has travelled through this gap. Then the deflecting member (62) is moved back into its position of rest so that the front region of the sheet (10) springs back in the direction of the bending roll (32) and as a result is again gripped by the bending roll (32) and the back-up rolls (34) and moved through between them.

In another aspect of the invention, a brake shoe is formed by the method described above.

    Abstract: Three-ply web material is rolled approximately 360.degree. into the form of a cylinder within a preform cavity. A feed roller at the opening rotates continuously and a spring loaded pressure plate has an edge at the opening which forces the web material against the feed roller. After the trailing edge of the segment of web material has passed the edge of the pressure plate, contact between feed roller and web material is lost and the circumferential position of the seam of the preform is thus precisely located. There is a slight overlap between the ends of the material at the same. The preform is longitudinally transferred into a non-conducting cylindrical forming cavity where heat and pressure are applied to fuse the overlap and form the seam. Heat is applied by induction heating through the walls of the forming cavity to the aluminum ply at only the overlap area. Pressure is applied by an expandable balloon mandrel inside the preform.
