  • Patent number: 5093974
Abstract: A sleeved roll generally has a bendable arbor. The sleeve is shrunk-fit on the arbor such that the dimensional difference between the arbor diameter and the sleeve inner diameter varies along the arbor axis. Thus the radial stresses induced by the shrunk-fit vary along the axis of the arbor. The sleeved bendable roll may be employed as a work roll or as a backup roll in a rolling mill. The roll is assembled by providing a bendable arbor having an axial surface and a hollow sleeve, axially contouring at least a portion of the arbor surface or the sleeve inner surface, positioning the hollow sleeve having an inner surface adjacent the arbor, and then shrink-fitting the sleeve inner surface on the axially convexly contoured surface of the arbor.

  • Patent number: 5038591
Abstract: In addition to the usual type of screw-down mechanism, work roll gap is adjusted during work roll change for different diameter work rolls, without removing the back up rolls, by a variable height plate rotatably inserted between the back up roll chocks and the housing, which will minimize the volume of oil contained within the screw-down adjustment rams while maintaining good rigidity for the plate adjustment even during high impact and high vibration hot rolling. A similar effect is provided by containing unused plate height portions entirely within the footprint of the housing where they can be rigidly supported. Further rigidity is obtained with minimizing the volume of fluid within the rams, accomplished by placing the valve stand immediately adjacent to the hydraulic rams for the screw-down and preferably on top of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4991499
Abstract: A roll arrangement comprises a hydraulically supported bottom roller having rotating hollow cylinder and a stationary crosshead extending lengthwise through the cylinder to form a clearance space therewith. The end of the crosshead are supported by force exerting devices. The forces producing the line pressure of the roll are transferred through a hydraulic supporting device, such as hydraulic fluid contained within a longitudinal pressure chamber in the crosshead, to the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder. When a quick release action is desired to separate the bottom roller from its counterroll, the pressure in the longitudinal chamber is suddenly lowered by opening a quick release valve connected to a return tank. A corresponding reduction of the pressure in the force exerting devices to permit separation of the rollers occurs only after a sensor, such as a dynamometer, has determined that the load on the crosshead has been substantially removed.

  • Patent number: 4796452
Abstract: A setting device for adjusting the position of a roll with respect to a mating roll, as in the press section of a paper machine, or the like. A roll trunnion or journal at the end of the roll is received in a bearing which is supported in a bearing housing that is axially outward of the roll. The outer part of the bearing is in turn supported to an actuator which is shiftable to move the roll transversely of its axis with respect to the mating roll. A base plate hydraulically supports and raises the actuator for the bearing housing. A guide plate supported to the base plate extends past the roll trunnion or journal. Linear motion guide elements for guiding the motion of the bearing housing under the influence of the actuator are provided. They are guide claws on the bearing housing which wrap around the guide plate and move along it. An additional actuator piston operates on the roll trunnion or journal to move it in the opposite direction from the actuator.

  • Patent number: 4770021
Abstract: A working roll shift type rolling mill has a housing including upper and lower working rolls having working roll chocks, and upper and lower reinforcing rolls having reinforcing roll chocks. Hydraulic rams mounted between the upper and lower working roll chocks apply a vertical force to the vertically facing portions of the respective chocks. The working roll chocks are immovably mounted on their respective working rolls so that they can be moved together. Each of the hydraulic rams has one end mounted in one of the upper or lower working roll chocks and the other end engaging the horizontal wall surfaces of the upper and lower working roll chocks that are vertically adjacent to each other. The working roll chocks and reinforcing roll chocks have flat side surfaces. The housing of the rolling mill includes windows each having a flat side wall such that the working roll chocks and the reinforcing roll chocks may be lifted and lowered within the housing.

  • Patent number: 4759205
Abstract: A multi-pass rolling method which permits a multi-pass rolling-mill stand to perform multi-path rolling and still stabilize the rolling operation by preventing lateral deviation movement of a metal workpiece being rolled. The rolling-mill stand has three or more work rolls arranged one above the other and the workpiece is simultaneously rolled at two or more points by at least one of the work rolls. Directly or indirectly roll gaps are detected on the work and drive sides of at least one pass by sensors. A difference signal from the output signals of the sensors is obtained thereby determining a roll gap difference. Control devices are provided which are responsive to the difference signal for independently changing the roll gaps on the work and drive sides.

  • Patent number: 4744235
Abstract: The rolls of a rolling mill can be axially moved by way of an actuator device equipped with piston-and-cylinder units. The bearing blocks which receive the journal ends of the rolls to be moved are horizontally guided in separate guide bodies. The guide bodies, in turn can be shifted vertically in cylinder blocks arranged at the flanks of the windows of the respective base member, or in pressure plates associated with such cylinder blocks. Abstract: The rolls of a rolling mill, especially the working rolls, are horizontally shifted by a compact adjusting device, with use being made, as required, of guide pieces. The device is readily arranged in cylinder blocks, and the movements of the device can be easily monitored, transmitted, and set. The predetermined motions are carried out in rigidly controlled manner and no elastic yielding is allowed because of pressure plates extending in the windows of the base frame members. The pressure plates can be horizontally aligned and they cooperate with the holding elements which are to be shifted. The pressure plates are supported by wedges which can be shifted horizontally and transversely with respect to the plane of the frame, by way of pressure posts which operatively engage the pressure plates.

  • Patent number: 4735116
Abstract: A rolling mill has a pair of cooperating work rolls with first and second chock pairs associated with each work roll. At least one work roll is rocked in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the work roll during operation of the rolling mill to enhance shear rolling and create regions of irregular thickness in the workpiece. This reduces friction between the work rolls and the workpiece in subsequent rolling thereby permitting greater lateral spread of the workpiece. The rocking may be effected in a generally vertical direction by a pair of cylinders secured to a pair of chocks or may be effected in a generally horizontal direction which may be that of the path of flow of the workpiece through the rolling mill by pairs of cylinders associated with each work roll or may involve rocking in both directions.
