Patent number: 4484466Abstract: After extrusion in an indirect metal extrusion press a removal arm, the end of which carries a holding sleeve for a die, a discard and a closing plate, is swung into the press axis between the billet carrier and the closing ram. The sleeve is divided into two transversely to the press axis. One part is fixed to the arm and clamps the die, while the other part receives the discard and the closing plate and can be displaced axially in the direction of the closing ram from the fixed sleeve part, the discard and the closing plate attached thereto being released. An hydraulically displaceable clamping seat provided on the removal arm and comprising respective pairs of grippers moves from below up to the closing plate and the discard and embraces them. During the operation to shear the discard from the extruded billet present in the clamped die the discard and the closing plate are moved downwards in a controlled manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1983Date of Patent: November 27, 1984Assignee: SMS Schloemann-Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Horst Groos, Gunther Wintzen

Patent number: 4475372Abstract: An indirect extrusion press has a die and die holder 20 and a sealing plate to close the billet carrier. After extrusion, a one-piece or two-part holding sleeve is placed between the sealing plate and the sealing stem and the latter is advanced to push the billet carrier over the die stem thereby expelling the sealing plate, the butt end of the billet, and the die holder into the sleeve. A shearing device then shears off the sealing plate and butt end, the second part of the holding sleeve moving aside with the sealing plate and butt end in it. The die holder is clamped in the holding sleeve which is pulled away from the billet carrier to separate the die from the extruded product. In the case of a one-piece holding sleeve, a transverse aperture is provided to allow the shearing operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1982Date of Patent: October 9, 1984Assignee: SMS Schloemann Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Gunter Ostlinning, Otto A. Patent number: 4459837Abstract: This invention provides an indirect metal extrusion method, in which free die system is adopted. A die (8) of two-stepped structure is capable of removing shell or outer layer of a billet simultaneously at the time of extrusion, and eliminating the container cleaning cycle after the extrusion. Besides, a shear support (3), an independent body of the container (2), is disposed on the nearer side of the container (2) to an extrusion ram (4), so that discard integrally clung to the die (8) may be served after finishing of an extrusion stroke off the die (8) which is rested on the shear support (3) by means of a shear (14) or a shearing apparatus. This method enables shortening of the extrusion cycle and eliminating damage to principal structure of the extruder.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1982Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: Sumito Light Metal Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Hiromasa Hayashi, Eiichi Mohri

Patent number: 4416138Abstract: An extrusion press having a die slide assembly capable of shearing the extrusion in the die, and transporting the die to a side movable transfer table for change thereof, the assembly eliminating excessive projection beyond the confines of the extrusion press of die transport equipment. The die slide assembly includes a first hydraulic cylinder for shearing an extrusion from the die, and a second hydraulic cylinder mounted adjacent the first cylinder for transporting the die and die holder to a transfer station on the side of said platen, permitting an exchange of the die holder die therewith, when necessary. The second hydraulic cylinder is movable with the die slide assembly to minimize the length requirements of the second hydraulic unit and still effectuate full traverse of the die holder.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1981Date of Patent: November 22, 1983Assignee: USM CorporationInventors: Howard W. Patent number: 4103529Abstract: A gate lock housing mounted against the rear face of the front platen of an extrusion press has a passage through it aligned with a passage through the platen. A tubular block is normally disposed in the housing passage where it is held by releasable gate lock means. Behind this block is a laterally movable carrier, in which is seated a bolster member having a passage through it aligned with the block passage.
