By cutting the channels into the cross-section of the extrusion, the extrusion may be easily formed onto a contoured tool to be curved with lower forming and residual stresses and distortion. By filling the channels with deposited material, the original cross-section and strength of the extrusion can be restored. By adding a transverse stiffener, the strength of the original extrusion may not only be restored but also further improved. By depositing material to create structural features the cross-section of the extrusion may be locally changed. The method for forming curved extrusions of the present invention may be used, for example, to produce T-chords of an aircraft.

    Abstract: In a method for producing curved work pieces, an extruded profile leaves the die of an extruder in the strand discharge direction and is then bent into a curved shape by external forces. The extruded profile that leaves the die, before being bent, is deflected so that the strand discharge direction extends forwards at an angle counter to the eventual curvature of the work piece. To this end, the die comprises a tool holder in whose receiving opening an extrusion tool package consisting of a die with or without a mandrel and a cover part is disposed. The guide surfaces of the die and/or of the mandrel that produce the discharged strand are designed or disposed to be at an angle with respect to the strand discharge direction which extends at an incline with respect to the center axis of the die counter to the eventual curvature of the work piece.

    Abstract: Twin metal billets are fed to dual circumferential grooves formed in a rotating wheel. The billets are advanced first to a wedge-shaped gap which deforms the billets and are then advanced to a die. The die has a die opening with a circumferentially discontinuous, annular cross-section. The metal from each billet merges in the die opening and exits therefrom in the form of a slit tube. The tube is then opened and flattened to form a flat strip by advancing the slit tube over a forming member having a progressively increasing width. As the tube is advanced over the forming member, an alignment system maintaining the tube in a centered position. The alignment system includes a light source disposed within the tube and two arrays of photo-transistors arranged to receive light from the light source, the amount of light sensed by each array being a function of the position of the slit in the tube relative to a desired position.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing an extruded profile shape from an extrusion press efficiently and economically during an extrusion operation. A first and second extrusion puller are mounted on suitable guide for movement along an extrusion line. One of the extrusion pullers receives and grips a profile shape as it is extruded from an extrusion press, and this puller exerts a pulling force on the profile shape. The first puller can pass off the profile shape to the second puller as the profile shape is extruded, thereafter the second puller would grip and pull the profile shape and the first puller would release its grip. When it is desired, or necessary to remove the profile shape from the extrusion press, the puller which is not gripping the shape grips the profile shape and a shear within the press shears off a butt portion of the billet. Then, both pullers, in tandem, apply a pulling force on the profile shape away from the extrusion press. The profile shape is stripped from the die.
