Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a formed piece of aluminum or some other relatively soft metal. In accordance with the invention, a slice is cut form a rod of aluminum or some other raw-cast metal; the slice forms a blank (3), which is placed on the mould surface (10) of a mould tool (5) rotating about its axis (4), and which is formed using a roll forming tool rotating about its axis (6) inclined to the axis of the mould tool and being in linear rolling contact with the blank surface. The blank is then formed to a substantially disc-shaped piece of plate between the opposite rotating tools (5, 7). The method may be part of the manufacturing process of a frying pan or kettle so that the roll formed piece may comprise the bottom and collar of the utensil, which is bent to form the sides of the cooking utensil at the next pressure turning stage; or, alternatively, the roll formed piece may be fastened as the bottom to a separately manufactured utensil by linear pressing.

  • Patent number: 5860214
Abstract: A shearing machine includes a sickle shaped upper jaw interacting scissors fashion with a generally linear lower jaw. The distal ends of the sickle shape begin shearing from opposite ends of a plate-type object at about the same time, with shearing progressing toward a central point. A transverse member and a return leg form, with the lower jaw, a J-shaped device. The upper jaw slides within the return of the J during the entire cutting operation, thereby overcoming any tendency for jaw spreading between the linear and sickle shaped cutters. A front cutting insert in the transverse member and a return cutting insert in the return leg, interact with a tip of the upper jaw to pierce, and then cut, a plate which is longer than the throat of the shearing machine, thereby enabling shearing of large plates. The initial piercing takes place simultaneously at the tip of the upper jaw and at an upward-directed point on the front cutting insert.

  • Patent number: 5490317
Abstract: The lower ends of alignment bearing shafts of an upper die member of a tape automated bonding apparatus are modified to include tapered alignment pins, each having a tapered surface that is complementary to the tapered interior end of the bore of a respective bushing on a lower die member. The alignment pin serves to guide its associated alignment shaft and a ball bearing sleeve carried thereby into the bushing. In addition, a first set of rails is installed directly beneath a die member actuator, and a second set of rails is installed on the upper die member. The second set of rails slide upon the first set of rails, so that the upper die member effectively mechanically floats on the first set of rails. The lower die member is affixed to a translatable platen, which is driven to an end stop position at the part excision station. Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for the manufacture of J-shaped display hooks with balled ends in a single manufacturing operation, without requiring separate handling of the display hook for the bending and ball-forming operations. A continuous length of wire is advanced incrementally and gripped tightly adjacent its forward end. The wire is severed by a cutting and forming bar, which also bends the base portion of the wire at right angles to the main axis of the wire. While the wire remains tightly gripped at its forward end, and continue to be supported adjacent its base by the cutting and forming bar, a ball-forming die is advanced against a projecting forward end of the wire, upsetting the wire end and forming an enlarged end of generally spherical configuration.
