A jack is positioned between the wedge and the cross member for urging the wedge toward the base member, and for bending a sheet of metal interposed between the wedge and the two blocks.

  • Patent number: 6880378
Abstract: A compact chain cutting apparatus for automatically shearing and opening a chain link of a selected thickness in one operation is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing, a first shearing member, a second shearing member, and an electro-hydraulic actuator system. The first shearing member is mounted to the housing. The second shearing member is pivotally mounted to the housing for movement to exert, in cooperation with the first shearing member, shearing and bending forces upon the chain link. The electro-hydraulic actuator system cooperates with the second shearing member to move automatically the second shearing member to shear and to bend the chain link, thereby defining an opening in the chain link greater than the thickness of the link.

  • Patent number: 6840078
Abstract: The present invention relates to a tool for shaping a workpiece. The tool has two pivotally connected arms that are stroked between open and closed positions. Each arm has a handle, an intermediate coupling portion and a working portion. One working portion has a cutting block with a face and two sidewalls that form a pair of spaced apart cutting edges. The other working portion has a pair of spaced apart ramp or wedge shaped blades with cutting edges that are aligned to shearingly engage the cutting edges of the cutting block. The tool is stroked to its open position to align the cutting block with the workpiece. The tool is then stroked to its closed position to form a pair of opposed flaps in the workpiece. The flaps form a slot having a desired width. The tool preferably includes a depth adjustment mechanism for selectively setting the tool to open to a desired intermediate position so that when the tool is aligned with the workpiece it will cut the workpiece to a desired depth.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the precise manufacture of high quality, four-sided electrical contacts by means of a closely controlled material skiving process. The apparatus is designed so that the starting material from which the four-sided electrical contacts are made is closely constrained in the area of the shear boundaries so that predictable and precisely controlled shearing of the material can repeatedly be achieved to initially form four precursor sides, two of which are arcuate. The apparatus also includes sequentially operating forming mechanisms for precisely forming the precursor sides of the precursor contact into a final end product configuration.

Abstract: This invention describes a hand operated, end cutting, sheet metal shear that makes cuts perpendicular to the axis of the tool handle. The shearing surfaces consist of a moving shear blade with a fixed rake angle and shear angle, cutting along a blunt anvil. The shear blade is pivotally mounted to the tool body and actuated by a toggle linkage and a movable handle. A stroke adjustment screw is incorporated into the fixed handle. The blade passes along the fixed anvil in response to squeezing the handles. The blade is angled so that the shearing action takes place sequentially along the anvil edge.
