  • Patent number: 4862722
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a novel shell such as used in the manufacture of can ends, and to a method and tools for making such a shell. A non-circular blank having rounded corners is cut from thin metal. The blank is oblong in a direction transverse to the grain of the metal. A first set of tools separates the blanks and forms a substantially flat central panel and an upward-extending chuck wall about the edge of the panel to produce a partially formed shell. The junction area between the panel and the chuck wall has a relatively large radius of curvature at this time. A second set of tools forms in the blank a lip extending outward from the upper end of the chuck wall and generally parallel to the panel; then the panel and the chuck wall are separately gripped, followed by relative movement between the panel and the chuck wall while wrapping the junction area around a forming punch to form a panel wall in the junction area extending upward from the inner part of the chuck wall.

  • Patent number: 4800743
Abstract: A method of controlling the spacing between a material forming punch and a complemental die includes advancing a punch shell and a pressure sleeve into engagement with the material and holding the material with the sleeve and blanking it with the punch shell. The material is then preliminarily formed by clamping the periphery between the pressure sleeve and a die core ring and advancing a punch core past the top of the die core ring and clamping the material against a die core to establish the desired dimension. The material is then finally formed by further advancement of the punch core with the die core and die core ring moving together. The apparatus includes a die core and die core ring which are concentrically arranged and independently supported but movable into engagement with each other after a predetermined amount of travel so as to move together through any further travel caused by movement of a punch core against the die core.

  • Patent number: 4711611
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for fabricating from ductile sheet metal a can body with integral side and bottom walls. A rounded non-circular blank is formed from the sheet metal, the blank having a greater width across the grain of the metal than along such grain. The blank is formed into a cup-shaped receptacle having a bottom and an upstanding wall of not less than the desired internal size of the can body. The wall has a length substantially less than the desired depth of the can body and is substantially thicker than the thickness desired in the finished can body. • Patent number: 4587826
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming end panels of uniform thickness for use with two-piece containers. The method includes the steps of engaging the stock under fluid pressure and blanking it; wiping the periphery of the stock against the blanking die to form a lip extending in a direction substantially normal to the planar surface of the blank. While still maintaining pressure on the blank, further steps involve drawing the blank to form an edge area that extends above the top planar surface of the blank and has a cross-sectional configuration resembling an inverted letter J, and finally completing forming of the end panel by reverse drawing the central body portion of the blank in an upward direction to set a chuckwall between the central body portion and the edge area. The apparatus includes tooling for a double action shell press which is capable of engaging and holding down the work piece under fluid pressure while performing the blanking and drawing operations.

  • Patent number: 4561280
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming shells for use as can ends is disclosed. A sheet of thin metal is supplied to a first station within a ram press, at which a generally circular blank is separated from the sheet and partially formed into the shell. The partially formed shell is transferred from the first station along a predetermined path to a second station within the same press by striking a blow edgewise of the shell and thereby directing it edgewise to the second station. The shell is captured and located at the second station, whereupon the shell is further formed to make the completed shell.

  • Patent number: 4434638
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described for use in combination with a machine for corrugating a continuous strip of flat sheet material which prepares the sheet material for separation into sections after it has been corrugated. A platform is located upstream of the corrugating machine. The platform is intermittently advanced in the direction of travel and at the speed of the sheet material so that the platform is stationary relative to the sheet material. A scoring device is located on the platform. The scoring device moves across the width of the sheet material as the platform moves with the sheet material to form a spanwise weak point in the material. After the material passes through the corrugating machine, it can readily be separated into sections at the weak points formed in the material by the scoring device. Depth of scoring can be varied also so that substantial/total separation can also occur within the corrugator though it would not separate the flat strip before it entered the corrugator.
