  • Patent number: 7900492
Abstract: An addendum shape portion of a panel material is drawn by a drawing portion of a press forming die by an amount equal to or less than the limit to which the panel material can be drawn, whereby a to-be-product portion of the panel material is roughly conformed to a forming face of a punch. In this state, the to-be-product portion of the panel material is stretched or drawn. Accordingly, the cross section of the to-be-product portion is uniformly changed at the minimum level, which makes it possible to produce, by press forming, a fender panel made of aluminum base alloy, which has a great plane dimension L and high quality. As a result, flexibility in the design of panel parts, which are formed by pressing the panel material into shapes, is increased.

Abstract: A container bodymaker gearbox (20, 130) drives rams (60, 66) linearly by use of a hypocycloid drive that controls operation of a rotating and orbiting output shaft (40) by synchronizing the rotating and orbiting motion such that a tracking point at a predetermined radius from the shaft 40 tracks a straight line. A coaxial sleeve (124) is spaced around shaft (40) and carries an annular crank hub (140) on bearings (142). The crank hub (140) is eccentrically mounted on the sleeve (124) with the hub centerpoint positioned to track the straight line tracking point. A rotary ring (166) mounted around the periphery of the crank hub (140) supports diametrically opposed connections (176) to rams (60, 66). The ring (166) and rams (60, 66) translate on the straight-line path determined by the centerpoint, with the hub (140) rotating as required within the ring (166) to cancel rotary motion of hub (14) from the translational motion of the ring (166).

Abstract: An upsetting method for working a metal slug of cylindrical shape and provided with a coating is disclosed. The slug is placed, lengthwise, in a sleeve the internal wall of which leaves a space with respect to the lateral surface of the slug, the slug and sleeve assembly is placed in an upsetting container, and an upsetting force is exerted on the slug on at least one of its transverse surfaces until a determined slenderness ratio has been obtained, and the slug is separated from the sleeve. The slug is upset continuously but only the slug is upset because of the space formed by the internal wall of the sleeve. The material of the sleeve, for example made of steel, is not welded or seized to the slug, which means that it need not be machined in order to separate the two after the operation.

Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention relate to an apparatus and method for producing untrimmed container bodies from pre-cut metal blanks. The method involves cupping a metal blank by positioning the blank against an immovable draw punch comprising an annular body having an inner surface adapted to form a redraw die and an outer surface, and drawing a periphery of the blank over the outer surface of the draw punch with an encircling draw die to form a cup having an open end, a closed end and an interior. The cup is then inverted and redrawn by forcing a redraw punch into the closed end of the cup to draw the closed end through the redraw die until the cup is inverted to form an inverted cup with a closed end supported on the punch. The inverted cup while supported on the redraw punch is passed through one or more ironing rings to lengthen the inverted cup to form an untrimmed container body having a closed end.
