  • Patent number: 5253508
Abstract: Force transmitting coupling (44) for transmitting force from an actuator (16) which oscillates along an arcuate path to a ram block (12) which reciprocates along a rectilinear path comprises a flexible member (50) coupling which is connected to the actuator (16) by a lost motion connection (90, 94) and which is against the ram block (12). The flexible member (50) is supported intermediate its ends in a manner such that it can flex by a predetermined amount but not more than the predetermined amount. When the ram block (12) is pushed from a retracted position to a forward position, the flexible member is placed in compression and flexes by only the predetermined amount. The force transmitted to the ram block is applied to the axis of the ram block.

Abstract: Crimping apparatus includes a pair of coaxial rings, at least one of which is axially moveable toward and away from the other ring. Each ring is provided with a single pair of force reactive adjoining steep and shallow concave frustoconical surfaces which face each other. A plurality of circumjacent, radially arranged crimping members are positioned intermediate the rings. Each crimping member has two pairs of steep and shallow force reactive convex frustoconical surfaces that slidably engage with the concave force reactive surfaces of the rings to radially move the crimping members to and from the ring axis between an open position and a crimping position. The radial movement of the crimping members is in response to axial movement of at least one of the rings.

  • Patent number: 5231859
Abstract: A fluting machine and method produce fluted poles. The fluting machine has an aperture means, a carriage, and a track configured so that the carriage can travel on the track toward the aperture means. The carriage has a fluted mandrel for holding a pipe to be fluted. The carriage carries the fluted mandrel and pipe parallel to the track to and from the aperture means at a constant speed irrespective of any fluctuations in driving resistance. The aperture means has a stationary inner part, a rotatable outer head, and a set of rotatory dies. The rotatory dies are circumferentially situated about and perpendicularly extendable within an aperture opening defined by the stationary inner part. The aperture opening is for accepting the fluted mandrel and pipe therethrough. The rotatable outer head causes extension of the rotatory dies within the aperture opening and against the pipe when the rotatable outer head is rotated.

The pressure ring includes a plurality of elongated detents which extend axially from the pressure ring, each adapted for insertion into a detent-receiving socket of one die segment contained in an elastomeric cage. Each detent is radially moveable with respect to the pressure ring, such that as the die segments are contracted radially inwardly, the detents hold the segments to the pressure ring but permit movement of the segments radially with respect to the ring. After each crimping operation, the detents, which are normally spring biased to their radially outermost position, will return the die segments to a fully opened position.

  • Patent number: 4866973
Abstract: A mounting structure for a collet crimping machine is disclosed which permits the machine to be selectively pivoted from between vertical and horizontal positions as desired for use. A pivotable mounting bracket includes a flat base plate having a pair of upstanding brackets secured thereto. An arm is pivotably connected to each of the brackets. The ends of the arms are connected to the bottom of the collet crimping machine, permitting the machine to be pivoted between vertical and horizontal positions. A piston and cylinder assembly may be connected between the base plate and the collet crimping machine. The piston and cylinder assembly may function similar to a shock absorber, so as to cushion the movement of the machine as it is pivoted. Alternatively, the piston and cylinder assembly may be connected to a source of pressurized fluid so as to selectively move the machine between the vertical and horizontal positions.

Abstract: A device is provided for crimping a coupling on the end of a hose. The device has a die assembly for holding the hose and coupling spaced apart from and in axial alignment with a crimping mechanism comprised of a hydraulic cylinder and a pusher. The cylinder has an internal stop. A fluid operated actuator means moves the crimping mechanism axially downward to engage the die assembly. The device has an adjusting mechanism for adjusting the crimping mechanism in a predetermined relationship to the die assembly. The crimping mechanism and the adjusting mechanism cooperate so that when the crimping mechanism engages the internal stop, the coupling is crimped to the hose end in accordance with the predetermined relationship. The adjusting mechanism contains an angular scale and a linear scale both with marked divisions. The adjusting mechanism provides for easy recalibration of the device.
