Patent number: 5009091Abstract: A control system for automatic counterbalancing the ram of a mechanical press by measuring energy level of the press flywheel and varying air pressure in a counterbalancing cylinder. Energy level is derived from a measurement of the linear speed of a moving press component at a fixed point in the ram reciprocation cycle.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1990Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Inventors: William H. Patent number: 4895213Abstract: An impact press of the type including a tool holder slidably mounted in a slide, a hammer sliding in the slide, and a spring resiliently acting between the hammer and the slide to urge the hammer toward the tool holder. An escapement device disengages the spring from the hammer in a determined position of the stroke. This escapement device includes two connecting rods articulated to each other about an axle at one end and the other end of which is articulated about axles respectively to the hammer and to the tool holder. A return spring urges the connecting rods back to an aligned position in which the articulation axles are in alignment along a straight line parallel to the path of the hammer. One of the connecting rods includes a ramp with which cooperates a pin rigidly connected to the slide such that when the ramp contacts the pin, the connecting rods are deflected from alignment with each other. An abutment rigidly connected to the press limits the return backward motion of the tool holder.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1988Date of Patent: January 23, 1990Inventor: Guy Neyret

Patent number: 4245493Abstract: An impact press includes drive means for reciprocating a sleeve at one end of which a ram is slidably and rotatably carried, the same being normally held in a retracted position by retaining means. The drive means that reciprocates the sleeve toward and away from impact tooling also regulates in synchronization therewith a releasing means by which the retaining means lets go of the ram to permit it to fly under the influence of a bias until it impacts the tooling. Reaction from the tooling after the punching has been completed provides a force for receiving the ram in the sleeve. If desired, the driving means can also be used to regulate the operation of a workpiece feeder, a workpiece brake, and any regulator that the impact tooling may have, all in synchronization with the movements of the sleeve. If a conventional air feeder is used, owing to limitations of the feeder, the device can be operated at 180 strokes per minute.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1979Date of Patent: January 20, 1981Inventor: Lennart J. Patent number: 4178792Abstract: A hammer comprises a bed in the guides of which is mounted a frame, the latter being supported on cushions. The frame mounts a hammer head provided with a dirve for imparting thereto an axial reciprocating motion. The hammer head drive includes a power cylinder with a piston and a piston rod. The hammer head is located in a central hole provided in the piston rod and has a working tool which is attached to the lower end thereof and is situated above a die block. The stroke of the piston exceeds the distance between the die block and the lower end of the piston rod. With the piston in the lowermost position, the piston rod in conjunction with the surface of the die block forms a closed zone around the hammer head, in which zone deformation of the blank is effected. The hammer head is provided with a mechanism for retention thereof in the initial position. Provision is also made for a mechanism for lifting the hammer head into the initial position after a blow.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1978Date of Patent: December 18, 1979Inventors: Petr P. Patent number: 4159634Abstract: A toggle mechanism pinches a metal tube and maintains the tube in a pinched condition, without fracturing. The toggle mechanism includes a plunger translatable along a longitudinal axis, as well as a pair of links pivoted about a common axis extending through an end of the plunger. One of the links also pivots about a fixed axis. A free end of the other link carries a push link which the other link translates at right angles to the plunger longitudinal axis. First and second sides of the tube bear against a first stop block and are engaged by the push link when a compresson spring, attached to the plunger, is suddenly released to irreversibly drive the plunger along its longitudinal axis so the pivot point of the two links is driven to an over travel position. At over travel, the free end of the push link and the stop block abut against opposite sides of the tube to pinch them together.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1978Date of Patent: July 3, 1979Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Edwin O. Patent number: 4069697Abstract: A control circuit for automatically counterbalancing the moving components of a mechanical power press. The counterbalance circuit is responsive to the current drawn by the press motor to regulate air pressure in a cylinder attached to the press ram. On the press downstroke, air pressure in the cylinder is decreased only if the press is over counterbalanced and on the press upstroke, air pressure in the cylinder is increased only if the press is under counterbalanced.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1976Date of Patent: January 24, 1978Assignee: Kasel Steel CorporationInventors: James J.
