  • Patent number: 5285722
Abstract: A shutheight adjustment system incorporating hydraulic tie rod nut assemblies for dynamically altering the tensioning and compression of the tie rods of a power press. Each hydraulic tie rod nut assembly includes a cylinder with an inner sliding piston threadably engaging the tie rod. A pressurizing mechanism injects pressurized fluid within a chamber formed by the piston and cylinder. By increasing pressure within the chamber of the hydraulic tie rod nut assembly, compression between the press bed and press crown may be increased thereby reducing the press shutheight.

Abstract: The shut height of a crimping die set (9) for crimping an electrical terminal (T) on an anvil (22) to a lead (L) is adjustable stepwise by means of a disc (60) which can be driven by a servo motor (M1) to a plurality of angular positions each setting a theoretical ideal shut height for a particular combination of lead and terminal sizes. Since anvil wear, in particular, and/or minor variations in lead and terminal dimensions can falsify the ideal crimp height set, the actual crimp height achieved, is measured electronically or mechanically, and the height of the anvil (22) is automatically adjusted in accordance with such measurement, by means of a further servo motor (M2) to adjust the shut height of the die set (9) and anvil (22), so that the ideal shut height is achieved.

The subject apparatus and method overcomes this problem by selectively forming a thickened edge along the edge of a thinner steel plate which can now be limited to the thickness required to withstand the stresses on the fabrication. The thickened edge is produced by passing a plate supported on a table through a forming apparatus having a forming roller. The table is movable in an oblique direction relative to the plate so that the shape of the thickened edge may be varied. The forming apparatus and table are automatically controlled to produce a thickened edge of a desired shape intermittently or continuously along a linear or non-linear edge of the plate.

  • Patent number: 5113684
Abstract: The invention provides an automatic die changing system for a power press with at least one carrier for transporting dies to and from a selected location in the press. The carrier is supported on a set of wheels, which are driven by at least one AC induction motor. An adjustable frequency AC motor drive supplies an AC frequency and voltage to the AC induction motor to control the speed of the motor and therefore the speed of a horizontal movement of the carrier into or out of the press. The speed of the carrier may be rapidly increased by increasing the AC frequency supplied to the motor on the individual wheels. A proximity detector signals the motor drive to trip a dynamic braking resistor, which electronically changes the phase order of the motors to reverse the direction of motor rotation, to decelerate the carrier in order to locate the carrier in the proper position.

  • Patent number: 5105649
Abstract: A progressive former having quick-change tooling provides tooling supports with means for adjusting the tools. The tooling is mounted so that the tooling and the structure for adjusting the tooling can be removed as units without loss of the fine-tuning of the adjustments and so that reinstallation does not require readjustment of the tooling. A transfer also provides adjustable cams for opening and closing gripper fingers which transport workpieces from one work station to the next. The adjustable cams are removable with the dies as units and can be reinstalled without further fine-tune adjustment. With the invention, entire tool sets can be changed in a very short time to eliminate loss of production capacity of the machine. Similar sized machines are provided with a fixed spacing between the locating surfaces for the stationary dies and the reciprocating tools so that tool sets having adjustments fine-tuned in one machine can be installed in a similar machine without further retuning of the adjustments.

  • Patent number: 5072620
Abstract: A stamping tool for use in an auto-indexable tool station having a number of character inserts that can be rotatably moved below a striker area so that a thin metal plate or sheet of metal may be marked. The stamping tool allows for automatic adjustment of tool length for any variation in material thickness. A pneumatic cylinder actuates a mechanism that engages the key way in the head nut. The tool length is changed by the rotary motion of the auto-indexable tool station. The character housing is rotated by the indexable tool station through the punch key which moves the selected character insert to the striker area within the tool. The striker area causes the character insert which is spring biased to protrude lower than the character inserts that are not in the striker area. When the stamping tool is struck by the ram, only the character insert in the striker area will contact the material to be marked.

  • Patent number: 5025652
Abstract: A collet surface structure is provided for a high-speed hydraulic press having collet interlock in order to eliminate leakage of oil into the clamping region. Furthermore, the formation of a harmful hydrostatic film thickness from the lubricating-oil film between the pressure rods and the collets is prevented, since the oil is immediately forced away due to the high clamping pressure between the clamping faces. These high clamping pressures result from the extremely short space of the lubricating-oil elimination grooves and the large capacity of the grooves. Thus, the oil-eliminating grooves are made large enough to eliminate reliably a hydrostatic oil film of at least 0.1 mm. This regularity is independent of the clamping diameter of the collet.
