    Abstract: A spiral winder is disclosed adapted to implement a new method for spirally winding a product of indefinite length, such as pipe, into a coil for packaging and/or transport to an end user. The spiral winder consists primarily of a rotor assembly (1) supporting a caster (7) such that product fed along the rotary axis to the caster (7) as the rotor (1) rotates is guided to the outlet from the caster to be deposited onto a pallet in the form of a planar spiral. By vertically indexing the pallet and reversing a radial motion of the caster outlet layers of planar spirals can be produced as a self supporting coil without the necessity of any internal mandrel or external retaining drum. By careful control of the stresses in the product as it passes to and from the caster (7) fragile product such as thin walled heat exchanger pipe can be coiled rapidly.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for decelerating and temporarily accumulating a hot rolled product moving longitudinally along a receiving axis at a first velocity V1. The product is directed through a curved guide having an entry end aligned with the receiving axis to receive the product, and an exit end spaced radially from the receiving axis and oriented to deliver the product in an exit direction transverse to the receiving axis. The curved guide is rotated about the receiving axis in a direction opposite to the exit direction of the product and at a speed at which the guide exit end has a velocity V2, thereby decelerating the product being delivered from the guide exit end to a reduced velocity V3 equal to V1?V2. The curvature of the guide and the orientation of its exit end is such as to form the delivered product into a helix deposited and temporarily accumulated on a cylindrical drum.

    Abstract: A laying head for forming axially moving elongated products into series of rings. The laying head includes an auxiliary guide which is readily dismantled from the laying head in order to accommodate the rolling of larger diameter slower speed products. The helical extension is subdivided into an outer cylindrical shroud surrounding the rotational path of the outlet end of the laying pipe, and an inner helical trough having its open side facing the shroud. The helical trough includes a central hub adapted to be detachably secured to the tubular pipe support carrying the laying pipe. The central hub and the tubular pipe support include coacting surfaces which insure that the components are reliably assembled for balanced rotation.

Means are also provided for rotating the cone assembly, whereupon passage of the product along the guide path will result in the product exiting from the laying head in the form of a helix.

The mandrel can be very short with a free terminating end from which the non-rotating coil feeds continuously for easy collecting or processing operations.
