Abstract: Surfaces of magnesium-base alloy workpieces may be mechanically worked and deformed to increase their resistance to corrosion, especially corrosion occurring in the presence of water or water and salt or other corrosive media. Workpiece surfaces that are to be thus protected are engaged in squeezing, sliding, and frictional contact with a suitable burnishing or other working tool that traverses the surface to compress and deform it and to refine the metallurgical grain structure. For example, the grain size is reduced in a surface layer that may extend to a depth of up to a few millimeters. And grain orientation is altered within that depth. The tool is not employed to intentionally remove material from the surface of the workpiece. The initial dimensioning of the workpiece may take into consideration the alteration of surfaces by the mechanical working process.

According to the present invention, even if the metal sheet is thin and light weight, a peripheral wall of sufficient strength can be formed, by the following steps: rotating the material held between a pair of dies and pressing an outer periphery of the material by means of a forming roller, in a radially inward direction, thereby thickening axially the outer periphery of the material to be extended to both sides of a non-processed portion, thus forming the peripheral wall.

Abstract: Friction stir processing (FSP) modifies the surface microstructure of metals so that thick-section metal workpieces can be bent over large angles without formation of surface cracks. A thick 2519-T8 aluminum plate (25.4 mm thick and 50.8 mm wide) was friction stir processed across the pre-tensile surface to a depth of 6.3 mm, and was then bent at room temperature over a punch with radius 38.1 mm into a v-shaped die to an 80° bend angle. Whereas unprocessed workpieces of this type exhibited surface cracking at 31° bend angle and failed at 40° bend angle, no cracking was evident for the friction stir processed workpiece up to 80° bend angle.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing an elliptic deep-drawn product including a first step of providing an intermediate product and a second step of providing an end product. In the first step, a rotary forming die is used to form in a blank a substantially round formed portion of a U-shaped cross-section. In the second step, the formed portion is deformed at its semicircular portion by press working to form an elliptic portion, being formed into a final shape.

Abstract: A method of forming a highly accurate sprocket or gear using a combination of spin forming and ironing. An edge of a metal blank disk is split and spin formed into a “T” shape using known methods. A profile, such as a toothed profile, is spin formed into the “T” shaped blank edge to form a sprocket or gear having initial rough dimensions. The spin formed sprocket is then ironed in an ironing die to achieve the final desired dimensions.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of producing a poly-V pulley which can economically produce a poly-V pulley of the type that is to be inserted and coupled onto a shaft via a one-way clutch or a bearing, the number of steps being as small as possible. A trunk is obtained by cutting a thick pipe blank into a fixed dimension. Thereafter, first and second preliminary ears are projectingly formed in the axial ends on the outer peripheral face of the trunk by pressing in which the axial end faces of the trunk are clamped between upper and lower dies respectively having annular wedge-like projections, and the wedge-like projections bite the axial end faces of the trunk. The first and second preliminary ears are shaped into first and second ears by rolling of a predetermined shape, and poly-V grooves are thereby formed.

  • Patent number: 5979202
Abstract: A method for making a grooved-end pipe fitting from standard pipe includes the steps of bending length of pipe on a press mandrel to form a curved pipe segment with an oval cross section and further working the curved pipe segment in a die to produce tangent end portions. The die cavity is shaped with a central curved portion and tangent end portions. The inner and outer radii of curvature of the central curved portion are greater than the inner and outer radii of the curved pipe segment, and are greater than the corresponding radii of curvature of a conventional cast fitting. As a result, the curved pipe segment can be shaped to conform to the shape of the cavity without buckling or bowing of the inner radius wall of the pipe. The tangent ends of the die shaped pipe are grooved in a subsequent step.
