Patent number: 6000262Abstract: Apparata and methods are shown and described for converting closed-topped containers, e.g., common aluminum beverage cans and steel food cans, into open-topped containers having open top mouths surrounded by a smooth rounded lip. In a preferred version of the invention, a closed-topped container, e.g., an aluminum can, is inserted within a casing so that its top protrudes outwardly therefrom. A tubular ram having a cutter situated therein is inserted over the can top and rotated with respect to the can to sever the can top from the remainder of the can. The ram is then withdrawn and inverted to reveal an annular bending groove facing the cut upper can sidewall. The ram is then screwed onto the casing to bring the bending groove onto the cut upper can sidewall, thereby bending a rolled lip on the can sidewall. The closed-topped can is thus converted into a cup-like open-topped container.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1998Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: William C. DriesInventors: William C. Patent number: 5728309Abstract: For forming or consolidating organic matrix composites, for example, an organic matrix composite panel is sealed between sheets of a susceptor material that is susceptible to induction heating. The susceptor sheets are heated inductively. The sheets in turn conduct heat to the organic matrix composite panel. When heated to the desired temperature, the composite panel is consolidated and/or formed. In the present invention, the susceptor sheets are selected so that their magnetic permeability decreases to unity at approximately the desired operating temperature thereby limiting heating to this "Curie temperature" and providing substantial uniformity of temperature in the panel. Of course, the concept applies to other induction heating operations for metals including SPF, brazing, annealing, heat treating, bonding, hot pressing, and the like.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: March 17, 1998Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Marc R. Patent number: 5412967Abstract: A method for producing a hard metallic ring body is presented in which a stock material of a ring-shape is roll formed between a pair of inner and outer forming rolls, one of which is provided with a shape change section (shaping roll). Roll forming operations are performed in three fabrication stages; initial, intermediate and final fabrication stages. A gap between the inner and the outer rolls is maintained at all times during the three processing stages. Early in the initial fabrication stage, a depression region is formed in the stock material by engaging with the shape change section of the shaping roll, and this engagement is maintained throughout the fabrication stages. The shaping roll and the forming roll are designed so as to cause the stock material to flow in the axial direction by the radial compression forces between the shaping and forming rolls.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1994Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.Inventor: Takeshi Ishihara

Patent number: 5297411Abstract: A metal sheet is pierced, pressed and drawn to provide a raised cylindrical section having an axis and which section is partly closed by an annular flange. The flange is bent inwardly to enlarge the cylindrical opening by orbiting a tool in engagement with the flange about the axis and rolling the tool along the flange about a second axis offset from the cylindrical axis to enable enlargement and thinning of the flange. Subsequently, a peripherally screw-threaded cylindrical roller of a diameter less than the diameter of the flange is continuously rolled about the flange in orbital relationship with flange cylinder axis until the surface is deformed into a complementary screw configuration.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1992Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Assignee: Eagle Precision Technologies LimitedInventor: Sydney I. Patent number: 5230234Abstract: A method of preparing a gear blank for roll-finishing, essentially comprising the step of: while supporting a gear blank with pitch-line chucking, finish-sizing the central axial opening of the gear blank to a desired concentricity to promote accurate subsequent roll-finishing. Also, a method of making roll-finished gears, comprising: (a) preparing a near-net-shape gear blank, with external gear teeth and a central axial opening, by intimately engaging and supporting the gear blank between two opposing roll-finishing gear dies, without teeth finishing pressure; (b) finish-sizing the sides of said axial opening to attain a concentricity between the gear blank's intended tooth pitch circle and said sized sides that is within the range of 0.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1992Date of Patent: July 27, 1993Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: William J. Patent number: 5092040Abstract: A process for manufacturing a vehicle wheel includes the steps of preparing a wheel raw material blank in which rim raw material is integrally formed at a peripheral edge of a disk member. The rim portion is formed by spinning the rim raw material while rotating the wheel material about the axis of the disk member. Thereafter, such spin molded raw material is heat treated, and then machined by cutting. The center portion of the rim is spin formed to its final thickness while the rim edge portions are left with a thickness after spin molding that requires machine cutting to the final dimensions.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1989Date of Patent: March 3, 1992Assignee: Asahi Malleable Iron Co., Ltd.Inventors: Takashi Kato, Kimio Ochiai, Masaru Kurebayashi

Patent number: 5060497Abstract: A pair of dies are provided of which die faces are formed with depressions sequentially brought into engagement with a particular portion of a workpiece as the workpiece rolls between the die faces. By compressing the workpiece while driving the same to roll between the die faces, an excess metal of the workpiece is caused to flow into the depressions sequentially for thereby forming an asymmetrical part of the article.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1990Date of Patent: October 29, 1991Assignees: Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Jukogyo KabushikiInventors: Ryoichi Takahashi, Tomoyoshi Sato, Hidehiko Tsukamoto, Kazuo Morimoto, Nobutaka Maeda

Patent number: 5042280Abstract: A straightening apparatus for metallic bars, rods, wires, tubes and the like is provided which includes a rotor which is adapted for being rotated about a longitudinal axis thereof. At least three rollers are mounted to the rotor body and are clearly rotatable about their respective axis. A bar which is to be straightened passes along the axis of the rotor. The rollers are alternately disposed on either side of the rotor axis so as to sequentially engage the bar to be straightened. The rollers are mounted so as to be pivotal so that the plane of each roller can be pivoted with respect to a plane passing through the axis of the rotor. When the rotor is rotated, the bar to be straightened is urged along the axis of the rotor due to friction between the surface of the rollers and the surface of the bar. At the same time, the rollers straighten the bar.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1990Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Inventor: Panayotis A. Anagnostopoulos
