Abstract: A process of forming the wall of the mouth of a cylindrical, metal container or packaging from a tubular ring that may or may not be molded that has to accommodate a sealing lid equipped with an elastic seal secured by a vacuum created in the container is characterized essentially by the use of a single element, the head carrying out the deformation of the internal diameter of the container by expansion to produce a bead together and simultaneously with a contraction that produces shrinkage above the bead of the mouth, the head comprising an expansible stationary part and a moving part that turns around the stationary part, the parts of the head being coaxial, which has the effect of compressing the metal and hardening it by organizing the metal molecules under two simultaneous stresses, which hardens the packaging and allows it to withstand the vacuum applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 5115655
Abstract: A method for preparing rings having an integral stiffening geometric pattern on its outer surface is disclosed. The method employs a variation of the drum rolling process, but it incorporates unique tooling for providing the pattern, preferably comprising a plurality of segments which fit together to define a ring, the inner surface of which presents the desired pattern toward the center of the ring. A unique drum arrangement includes inner and outer components for locking the segments in place and for providing the structural integrity required for the final drum rolling operation. A cylinder, for example an aluminum or aluminum alloy cylinder, is placed in the drum, the cylinder being preformed and presized to fit concentrically within the segment defining ring. Following heating of the assembly to forming temperature, the cylinder is radially expanded using a sizing tool, and the assembly is then placed over a mandrel in preparation for drum rolling.

  • Patent number: 4909056
Abstract: A seamless tube-like blank is formed and cut into single annular parts which consecutively are profiled by means of two tools having the shape of solids of rotation. During the profiling operation, the specific surface pressure on the inside and on the outside of the workpiece is equal. Preferably, an inner profiling roller and an outer annular profiling tool is used, the mutual distance thereof being variable. Simultaneously, the inner roller acts on the workpiece with its convex outer surface, and the outer annular tool acts on the workpiece with its concave inner surface. Thus, the effective surface pressures on the inside and on the outside of the workpiece are equal during processing thereof. The apparatus is equally well suited for the manufacturing of steel rims and aluminium rims.

  • Patent number: 4545229
Abstract: The invention relates to the rolling and drawing of metals. The microwire manufacturing method according to the invention is characterized in that a microwire blank (1) is rolled during the drawing process in opposite directions relative to the drawing axis (B--B). The blank (1) is rolled over the same distance equal to at least one half of its circumference. The method is carried out with the aid of a device comprising a body (3), a die (4) and a mechanism for drawing wire through the die (4). The die (4) is composed of two parts (5 and 6) which interact with the blank (1) as the latter is drawn between them. Each of the die parts (5 and 6) has a working surface (8). According to the invention, the parts (5 and 6) of the die (4) are secured in the body (3) so that they can be set in synchronized reciprocating motion in parallel planes. The working surfaces (8) of both parts ( 5 and 6) of the die (4) are flat and parallel with each other and the drawing axis (B--B).

  • Patent number: 4510781
Abstract: A ring rolling machine for cold rolling bearing cages and the like has a working station (32) at which the rolling operation is performed on an annular blank by an annular die (80,82) co-operating with a mandrel (50). The die is held coaxially in a die housing (74) mounted rotatably in one of two through openings (62,64) in a shuttle (42) which is reciprocated between the working station and two alternate transfer stations (28,30) at which the front die insert (82) is ejected with the rolled ring and re-inserted with a fresh blank. The die housing projects through a slot (70) in the shuttle to engage the die drive roll (78), and via the die transmits rotation derived from the drive roll to the mandrel and a pair of mandrel support rolls (110) which apply radial force to the mandrel. The mandrel support rolls are mounted in a head on a shaft pre-tensioned to control their axial position without fasteners; they also control the axial positions of the die and mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4241596
Abstract: An apparatus for roll-forming a blank ring into an annular product such as a seamless wheel rim. The apparatus includes an annular die rotatably supported in a die head, and a pressure roll rotatably supported in a roll head and movable toward and away from the annular die. The apparatus further includes a cylinder unit for moving the pressure roll radially of the annular die when the pressure roll is in the annular die, whereby the blank ring can be interposed between the pressure roll and the annular die. As the die is rotated, the blank ring is roll-formed between the roll and the die into an annular ring, which then is confined in the annular die and can be taken out when the die is disassembled into a plurality of segments. The product thus formed has a high degree of circularity and precision, and is free from distortions.

  • Patent number: 4233832
Abstract: A metal wire or rod is passed between two rolls one inside the other but with offset axes. The larger outer roll which may be ring-shaped has a smooth inside contact surface. The smaller internal roll has a smooth outside contact surface. Together, these two eccentrically disposed surfaces form a long converging throat between them through which the wire or rod is passed as it is being rolled into a strip. The opposing, smooth surfaces have a separation at the closest point which is less than 1/3 the diameter of the metal wire or rod to be fed between them. The distance between the point where the wire first contacts the opposing, smooth contact surfaces of the converging throat and the closest point of separation between the opposing surfaces is preferred to be at least four times the original diameter "D" of the wire or rod being fed therethrough.
