  • Patent number: 4126029
Abstract: Hollow cylindrical metal structures with internal contours are constructed from a thick-walled hollow cylinder of axial length, weight and outside diameter substantially equal to the axial length, weight and outside diameter of the desired preform. The cylinder is placed in a restraining cylindrical container having an inside diameter and length substantially equal to the outside diameter and length respectively of the cylindrical structure. The entire assembly is then rolled between a forming roll die having a contoured outside face abutting the inside face of the hollow cylinder and a support roll die abutting the outside face of the container until the inside face of the hollow cylinder conforms to the profile of the forming roll. Radial growth of the hollow cylinder during this contouring operation is inihibited by the cylindrical container. Axial growth of the hollow cylinder during the contouring operation is also inhibited with the help of flanges on the roll dies.

  • Patent number: 4083215
Abstract: The method disclosed herein briefly includes the steps of (1) forming a pair of nestled cup-like pulley hubs having radially extending flanges in side-by-side relationship and (2) rotating the nestled hubs about a rotating axis while simultaneously urging a tapered projection on the inner surface of a rotatable, annular forming tool between the side-by-side flanges to spread the flanges and form a V groove with only minor relative rotary motion between the flanges and forming tool in their areas of contact. By having the working portion of the forming tool formed on the inner portion of a rotatable, annular tool, relative rotary movement between the flanges and tool and hence galling of the flanges is kept at a minimum. The tool disclosed herein is an annular groove forming tool having the working portion thereof formed on the inner surface of the tool, the tool including the means for mounting on the same on a spinning lathe so that the tool can be used while the pulley is rotated on the lathe spindle.

  • Patent number: 4070888
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for simultaneously necking and flanging an unformed end portion next adjacent a rim portion of a cylindrical side wall portion of a sheet metal can body member to form a curved necked-in wall portion in the unformed end portion next adjacent and connected to the side wall portion and to form a radially and axially outwardly extending flange portion between the formed curved necked-in portion and the rim portion comprising:Means for rotatably supporting the can body member during the necking and flanging operation;Outer forming means mounted without the can body member in radially outwardly spaced relationship to and in axial alignment with the unformed end portion and having a curved annular outer forming surface extending therearound for engaging the outer peripheral surface of the unformed end portion to form the curved necked-in portion;Inner forming means mounted within the can body member in radially inwardly spaced relationship to and in axial alignment with the unformed end portio

  • Patent number: 4067217
Abstract: A wheel rim is formed from a cylindrical blank in an apparatus including a female die with a profiled, internal die cavity for receiving the blank and a male die, which includes a pair of shafts with eccentric portions carrying rollers for sequentially bearing against the blank to gradually form a wheel rim. During formation of the wheel rim, the female die, which is mounted on a turntable, is rotated while the male die is stationary. The blank is held between a ring portion of the male die and the central portion of the female die. The shafts carrying the rollers are independently rotatable, so that only one set of rollers actively forms the rim at any time during formation.

  • Patent number: 4047414
Abstract: Device for rolling rolling-contact bearing races from a blank by means of a die and shaping wheels comprising an inner roller for obtaining the internal profile of the race in the die from which it is separated to permit a possible extrusion of the excess material of said blank, and an outer wheel for shaping part of the external profile of the race against the action of the inner roller, said die being divided in the axial direction into two separable sections disposed on either side of said outer wheel in a die support and constituting a cavity of which the profile is designed for shaping the portions of the outer profile of the race which are adjacent to those shaped by said roller, the two die sections being fitted for free rotation in said die support.

  • Patent number: 4040281
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing split pulleys includes a frame and a spindle assembly supported by the frame having an upper spindle and a lower spindle assembly for supporting for rotation a blank to be split therebetween. The lower spindle assembly includes a clamping mechanism having a screw means for drawing the upper spindle toward the lower spindle assembly and the lower spindle assembly toward the upper spindle to clamp the blank to be split therebetween. Bearing means are disposed between the frame and the spindle assembly for supporting the spindle assembly for rotation. The clamping means are operative to exert a clamping force between the upper spindle and the lower spindle assembly which is isolated from the frame and the bearing means to clamp a blank therebetween. A pair of rotatable tools are provided each of which has an axis of rotation parallel to the axis of rotation of the spindle assembly and each of which is associated with a motor means to effect rotation of the tools.
