Abstract: An apparatus and a method for switching channels in a digital broadcasting system. The apparatus and method of the invention can convert an abridged channel name comprised of alphabetic letters, or a combination of alphabetic letters and Arabic numbers, inputted by a user, into a corresponding channel number and switches into a digital broadcasting channel at a tuner according to the channel number so that a user can easily switch broadcast channels.

Abstract: Method and system for enabling users to perform self-service operations in interactive TV environments. In one embodiment, the method enables users to select and activate programming packages via a set-top box, thereby eliminating the need for the users to have to call a call center to activate the unit. Using a set of interactive screens, the user is enabled to view various programming package information, including comparative information. In one embodiment, the method assists users who are moving to activate/reactive broadcast services. For example, options are provided to enable the user to schedule service work, disconnect and activate services, and other activities connected with the move. In another embodiment, the method enables a user to select a programming package based on packages that are recommended by the system. Historic usage patterns, including viewing habits and attempts to access unavailable content are analyzed to determine which programming packages should be recommended for the user.

Abstract: Content delivery systems and methods are operable to provide recoverable program content to a media device. An exemplary embodiment detects an occurrence of a qualifying event, wherein the qualifying event is associated with an unavailable portion of a program of interest; communicates a request to establish a backchannel between the media device and a program content device in response to detecting the occurrence of the qualifying event; communicates a request for a recoverable portion of the program of interest from the media device to the program content device over the backchannel, wherein the requested recoverable portion of the program of interest corresponds to the unavailable portion of the program of interest; and receives at the media device the recoverable portion of the program of interest from the program content device.

Abstract: Channel switching for a receiver for digital broadcasting includes identifying pilot data from a digital broadcasting signal. The pilot data is stored in a memory. Channel switching is performed at least based on the stored pilot information.

Abstract: To provide, in a multimedia content server which stores multimedia data and transmits the stored multimedia data to a terminal, a technique which allows the terminal to properly detect and process version up of section data even when random access for trick play, and the like, is performed. Upon receiving a data transmission request from a multimedia data receiving apparatus, a multimedia data transmitting apparatus transmits the requested multimedia data and notifies data necessary for obtaining an update-point of section data included in the multimedia data or a URI which enables the obtaining of the data, to the multimedia data receiving apparatus.

Abstract: A video services control system comprises a set top box coupled to a television and a video services network configured to provide video services to the television via the set top box. The video services network includes an application program operable to develop and implement individualized usage restriction profiles for users of the set top box to control video services viewing. The application program is configured to provide a designated administrator with authority to dictate the usage restriction profile for non-designated users. The individualized usage restriction profiles include restrictions on the content of video services shown on the television for viewing by the users. The application program is configured to receive information input by the designated administrator, develop each usage restriction profile based on the input information unique to each user, and implement each usage restriction profile to control video services viewing by the users.

Abstract: A service application method and system, and a service application control agent (SACA) for reducing the delay of service application are provided. The method includes the following steps. An SACA receives service application information sent from a customer premises equipment (CPE). The SACA queries for Quality of Service (QoS) parameters corresponding to the service according to the service application information. Resource authorization and reservation request information containing the QoS parameters is sent to a resource and admission control unit. The resource and admission control unit verifies the request information to be authorized and admitted, and delivers a control strategy to a transport unit after the verification is passed. A service application system and an SACA are also provided correspondingly.

Abstract: To provide a technology for stopping recording in an improper state by detecting whether an electronic device is in the process of being carried or not, and so on. Data signals that have been broadcast are received, the data signals are recorded on a storage unit at preset time, a state related to the recording of the data signals is detected, the data signals are recorded, and the recording of the data signals is stopped corresponding to a result of the detection.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for an interactive media services system to provide media to a user through an interactive media services client device. The client device is coupled to a programmable media services server device. The method includes the step of implementing an interactive media guide. Additionally, the client device is implemented to present the interactive media guide to the user. A system operator is provided an interface to the programmable media services server. Control options are provided within the interface to allow the system operator to configure a plurality of rental options available to the user. Finally the interactive media service system is implemented such that the plurality of rental options can be executed by the user in a requested active media session.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for an interactive media services system to provide media to a user through an interactive media services client device. The client device is coupled to a programmable media services server device. The method includes the step of implementing an interactive media guide. Additionally, the client device is implemented to present the interactive media guide to the user. A system operator is provided an interface to the programmable media services server. Control options are provided within the interface to allow the system operator to configure a plurality of rental options available to the user. Finally the interactive media service system is implemented such that the plurality of rental options can be executed by the user in a requested active media session.

Abstract: A method of providing video on demand to a set-top box includes sending playing parameters of a video file to a video on demand server, and receiving information of the video file and predetermined quality of service parameters of the set-top box. The method further includes receiving updated quality of service parameters input by a user, and sending the updated quality of service parameters to a worldwide interoperability for microwave access client module of the set-top box, and sending the updated quality of service parameters to a worldwide interoperability for microwave access base station. The method also includes sending a playback instruction to the video on demand server, and receiving video streaming data of the video file based on the updated quality of service parameters from the video on demand server.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a digital receiving apparatus for providing useful information to its user without interruption when reception quality deteriorates. Abstract: A system instructs that a first carrier signal that is modulated with a first digital media stream be sent to a first receiver, where the first digital media stream uses a first bandwidth. The system receives a second request from a second receiver to send a second digital media stream, where second digital media stream uses a second bandwidth that is greater than the first bandwidth, and determines that transmitting the second digital media stream will require use of the first bandwidth. The system instructs that a second carrier signal be modulated with the first digital media stream and sent to the first television receiver, and sends to the first television receiver an identifier of the second carrier signal as carrying the first digital media stream.

Abstract: A system and method for providing caller ID in a multi-region cable network. Caller identifying (CID) information of an incoming VoIP call is provided to a digital telephone subscriber through a video termination device (VTD) using a path that is different from the path by which the VoIP call packets are delivered to the digital telephone subscriber. The telephone number of a digital telephone subscriber is associated with the IP address and/or MAC address of the subscriber's VTD. The called number of the incoming VoIP call is used to select the VTD to which the CID information is delivered. A message is then sent through an out-of-band channel to the digital telephone subscriber's VTD comprising the CID information for display on video display equipment. Alternatively, the VTD is DOCSIS-compliant and a message is addressed to the VTD using the IP address of the VTD DOCSIS modem.

Abstract: A Distributed Video System provides a scalable and interactive video-on-demand service with VCR operations over a communication network includes a video server and video clients, each of which includes a memory buffer, called a client buffer. The System provides a method of managing video frames of client buffers in a cooperative way with video frames held in the video server allows the video frames of the client buffers to be shared among the video clients. Requests for a video are primarily served by the video clients that have the requested video frames in their client buffers and only requests that the video clients are unable to attend to will be provided by the video server.

Abstract: Live television broadcast and other information and entertainment programs, e.g., videos-on-demand (VOD), are provided to a user through a communications network, e.g., a cable network. A processing unit is employed at an headend of the communications network to respond to user requests for PVR-like functions, e.g., pausing, rewinding and fast-forwarding, to be performed on the program content being viewed. The processing unit in accordance with the invention causes a delivery of an appropriate version of the program content to meet such user requests.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for retrieving and providing voice mail messages from a server are described. In accordance with the invention voice mail messages may be retrieved via requests made via a set top box. Voice mail messages are retrieved in response to the request from a voice mail server which is also accessible via the telephone network. Retrieved voice mail is transcoded and included in a video on demand (VOD) file. Text, call ID information and/or other information as, e.g., an automatically generated transcript of the voice mail message, may be included in the VOD file. The VOD file is supplied to a VOD server which provides the file including the message to the set top box for display. A user can view the messages and switch from viewing one message to the next by using video play back commands.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for secure transfer and playback of multimedia content enables the secure transfer of multimedia content from a digital video recorder (DVR) to a personal computer (PC) and further to a handheld device. A DVR determines which devices on a Local Area Network (LAN) are authorized to share and/or retrieve content from the DVR. The DVR receives a connection request from a PC on the LAN, authorizes the connection request and establishes a secure connection between the DVR and the PC. Once the secure connection is established, the DVR receives a request for multimedia content from the PC, prepares the multimedia content for transfer and transfers the multimedia content to the PC.

Abstract: A method of performing data communication with a terminal and a receiver using the same enables viewing of a broadcast program and a video program of an external device outside the home. The method includes steps of receiving a control signal from a terminal via a network, the control signal including a request signal identifying a specific video program; processing, in response to the received control signal, the specific video program according to characteristic information of the terminal; and transmitting the processed video program to the terminal via the network. The media asset may be routed to a recorder device for storage purposes. The media asset may also be streamed to a set top box for (simultaneous) playback on, e.g., a television. Abstract: A multimedia streaming service system is provided that includes a VOD server to sequentially transmit a header (moov) and media data (mdat) of MP4 contents in a TCP packet and a client to transmit a streaming service request signal in HTTP to the VOD server. The client may accumulate the media data (mdat) received from the VOD server in a decoder buffer for a predetermined time, and reproduce the data on a real time basis. A guaranteed rate of QoS may be enhanced as compared to an RTP/UDP-based streaming method. A service delay time may be reduced as compared with a TCP-based downloading method, thereby implementing contents on a real time basis.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product for providing scalability for channel change requests in a Switched Digital Video system is presented. A request for a channel change is received. A determination is made regarding whether a channel requested by the request for a channel change is currently being provided to the settop box. When the channel requested by the request for a channel change is being provided to the settop box then the request for a channel change is buffered for transmission at a later time. When the channel requested by the request for a channel change is not being provided to the settop box then the request for a channel change is immediately sent to an SDV server in communication with the settop box.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system and a method of providing a VOD (Video On Demand; below referred to as ‘VOD’) preview channel through channel zapping in a real-time broadcast service. To do this, the present invention includes a VOD preview channel for a VOD service between real-time broadcast channels, and allows a user to view a VOD screen as well as a real-time channel through channel zapping. As a VOD screen, a playing screen for playing a pre-downloaded VOD preview content for the corresponding VOD preview channel is displayed, and the corresponding VOD can be watched through such functions as an initial viewing and a continuous viewing if a viewing on the screen is wanted.

Abstract: When selecting a television program for recording, a user may configure the delivery of the selected television program and associated data and interactive applications to different user equipment devices in a home network, which may have different capabilities. Because the user equipment devices in the home network may have different capabilities, the user may wish to deliver different types and amount of content, different amounts of data, and different versions of interactive applications to the user equipment devices in the home network.

Abstract: A multimedia-on-demand peer-to-peer device acting as a receiving peer includes a local cache memory device adapted to store a multimedia prefix. Local storage of the multimedia prefix allows rapid commencement of playback of the requested multimedia program without substantially loading the streaming capacity of an associated server device. The storage of multimedia prefixes in local cache memory of the receiving peer device can take place during periods of relatively low network loading so as to optimize network and server scheduling. Included is a method and apparatus for performing admission control in a peer-to-peer multimedia-on-demand system. The admission control system determines if there is sufficient system capacity to support a new request from a peer-to-peer device acting as a client in light of the presence of stored multimedia prefixes at the peer-to-peer device acting as a receiving peer device, among other factors.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to allocating mobile-terminal electronic-service-guide (ESG) memory for use in storing a dynamically adjustable ESG, determining a composition of a dynamically adjustable ESG that can be stored in the allocated mobile-terminal ESG memory, and determining whether ESG fragments are deleted from the dynamically adjustable ESG to reduce the size of the dynamically adjustable ESG. The size of the allocated ESG memory may be determined based on an amount of memory dynamically available in a mobile terminal and/or by checking statistics of previously stored and/or received ESG data. A time-filter value may be determined for use in determining whether particular ESG fragments should be stored in the dynamically adjustable ESG. The time-filter value may be determined based on a number of channels (or services) for which ESG fragments will be stored in the dynamically adjustable ESG and/or based on whether an ESG-memory-usage threshold has been exceeded.

Abstract: A particular method includes searching a database associated with a content provider. The database includes content items available from the content provider as well as content items that are not available from the content provider. The database is searched based on a search query received from a set-top box to generate a list of content items. The list of content items includes at least one entry corresponding to a particular content item that is unavailable and includes a feedback control. The method further includes receiving a request that the content provider make the particular content item available and automatically determining to acquire rights to provide access to the particular content item based at least in part on the request.

Abstract: A method of preparing data streams to facilitate seamless switching between such streams by a switching device to produce an output data stream without any switching artifacts. Bi-directional switching between any plurality of data streams is supported. The data streams are divided into segments, wherein the segments include synchronized starting points and end points. The data rate is increased before an end point of a segment, to create switch gaps between the segments. Increasing the data rate can include increasing a bandwidth of the plurality of data streams, for example by multiplexing, or compressing the data. The present invention can be used, for example, with MPEG or AC-3 encoded audio and MPEG encoded video segments that are multiplexed into MPEG-2 transport streams. Also included are specific methods for preparing MPEG video streams and multiplexing MPEG video with MPEG or AC-3 audio streams to allow a receiver to create seamless transitions between individually encoded segments.

Abstract: A method of providing communications services to customer premise equipment (CPE) coupled to a television. The method includes operating a network element as a communications terminal server, the network element being part of a communications network. The network element receives from the CPE a request to initiate communications with a diagnostic system coupled to the communications network. The network element accesses a communications application executing on a communications server coupled to the communications network and pushes a communications interface to the CPE. The network element receives message information from the CPE and routes the message information to the communications server to initiate delivery of a message to the diagnostic system.

Abstract: A method of providing performance data is disclosed that includes receiving a performance data request at a set-top box device from customer premises equipment. The performance data request identifies a first performance data measurement and the first performance data measurement is related to a performance aspect of the set-top box device. The method also includes identifying a first portion of a data structure that includes the first performance data measurement. The data structure further includes a second portion designated for a second performance data measurement. The data structure is stored at a data storage device associated with the set-top box device. Further, the method includes retrieving the first performance data measurement from the data storage device based on the first portion of the data structure and sending data associated with the first performance data measurement from the set-top box device to the customer premises equipment.

Abstract: An information on demand system provides a user of a terminal (subscriber) information through a network such as CATV such that the user pays an adequate charge to a server (information provider). According to the information on demand system, the received information can be recorded in a recording medium under control of the terminal equipment. Cases in which 1) the subscriber merely watches a program on a television receiver and; 2) the subscriber records the program and watches it by reproducing the recorded information at another time are distinguished and the subscriber is charged a different amount by the server accordingly.
