Abstract: A method of providing communications services to customer premise equipment (CPE) coupled to a television. The method includes operating a network element as a communications terminal server, the network element being part of a communications network. The network element receives from the CPE a request to initiate communications with a diagnostic system coupled to the communications network. The network element accesses a communications application executing on a communications server coupled to the communications network and pushes a communications interface to the CPE. The network element receives message information from the CPE and routes the message information to the communications server to initiate delivery of a message to the diagnostic system.

Abstract: A television includes a control section, an interface and an external software module. The control section includes a processor and an internal memory that is in communication with the processor. The internal memory stores original program instructions for use by the processor to operate the television in accordance with the original program instructions. The interface is accessible exteriorly of the television and is in communication with the control section. The external software module is connectable to the interface and stores additional application program instructions that are downloadable to the control section when the external software module is connected to the interface. The downloaded additional application program instructions enable the television to function in a manner differently than any of the original program instructions. A method for adding new application program instructions to a television is also described.

Abstract: The method and system of the present invention provides an improved technique for replacing, implementing and managing computer-related assets. A technician accesses the World Wide Web through a user's computer. The information resident on the computer, including information regarding the computer and the user's preferences, are downloaded to a remote storage medium through the World Wide Web. Once downloaded, all information may be removed from the user's computer. Subsequently, the technician accesses another computer such as, for example, a new computer that has been assigned to the same user. The technician accesses the World Wide Web through the new computer and downloads the information previously stored on the remote storage medium. This information can then be used to install the user's prior applications, settings and preferences on the new computer.

Abstract: The apparatus and method of the present invention provides a system for reducing the amount of information displayed in an on-screen television program guide. The user selects a genre by pressing a genre labeled button on a remote control. The remote control transmits an infrared signal to a set top box. The set top box then filters program guide data received from a satellite dish according to the selected genre and displays only channels and/or shows associated with the selected genre.

The apparatus includes a random access memory and a non-volatile memory. The setting information includes channel information and on screen display setting information.

Abstract: Disclosure is directed to determining a condition of the television receiver and communicating information regarding that condition to end-points that are external to the television receiver. The television receiver may create a two-dimensional barcode with information regarding the receiver condition and output the two-dimensional barcode for display on a display device. Once displayed on the display device, the two-dimensional barcode may be scanned into a mobile device where the information regarding the receiver condition may be stored, processed and/or forwarded to another location or device.

Abstract: In an apparatus and method to upgrade software of a set-top box, when a malfunction renders it impossible to receive software upgrade data through System Information (SI), the data is received through Program Specific Information (PSI). Accordingly, it is not only possible to upgrade the software when a malfunction occurs, but also to recover from the malfunction.

Abstract: The present invention relates to home devices such as set-top boxes, and more particularly to methods providing autonomous file transfers to and from such home devices. There is provided a method for spreading notifications pertaining to the completion of file transfers in time. The method is based on the concept of imposing different delay times on different devices, which delay times must be observed prior to notifying the server of a file transfer completion.

Abstract: Enhancing a stream layer transmission for a MediaFLO™ mobile multimedia multicast system comprising a transmitter and a receiver. Code word (CW) computations are performed on a current channel being accessed by the receiver. A favorite channel that a user is statistically mostly likely to switch to on the receiver at any particular time is anticipated. The Overhead Information Symbols (OIS) for each favorite channel is periodically monitored. The receiver remains in a sleep mode while data bursts are received from non-favorite channels, and then wakes up during data bursts of the favorite channel. The same CW computations are performed on the favorite channel as were being performed on the current channel. A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is performed once the CW computations are performed upon selecting the favorite channel.

In particular, the email includes a return email address that causes a response to the email to be sent to a location other than the set top box.

Different types of real-time data may be assigned different expiration times.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for dynamically adjusting advertisement (“ad”) time for a multicast channel. In one embodiment, a variable ad insertion function operates to receive one or more multicasts of media content from a core distribution network, insert ad timeslots into the media content, and optionally perform late-binding of ads to the ad timeslots. The media content including the inserted ad timeslots and late-binded ads, if any, is then multicast to associated client devices over a feeder network using corresponding multicast channels. For each multicast channel, insertion of ad timeslots into the associated media content is dynamically controlled based on the number of users currently consuming or predicted to consume the multicast channel, the number of client devices receiving or predicted to receive the multicast channel, or both.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for retransmitting high definition contents broadcasted on a plurality of channels to IP-supported devices such as a digital media player (DMP), a mobile phone, personal computer (PC), etc. which are connected through a DLNA network. The method for retransmitting the broadcasted high definition contents includes the steps of generating a virtual item by converting channel information for a digital TV broadcast into an Extensible Markup Language (XML) file format, transmitting the virtual item to the DMP, determining whether there is a request for a personal TV service (PTS) from the DMP, tuning to a channel corresponding to the PTS if there is the request for the PTS, storing and packetizing a digital TV broadcast stream received through the PTS channel, and transmitting the packetized digital TV broadcast stream to the DMP.

Abstract: A digital broadcast receiver and an upgrading method thereof that can achieve an upgrade stabilization. The digital broadcast receiver includes a tuner to receive broadcast data of a selected channel, a demultiplexer to separate new middleware data and information data corresponding to the new middleware data from the broadcast data, a memory to pre-store previous middleware data and to store the new middleware data and the information data, and a controller to determine whether to store the new middleware data in the memory based on the information data. If storage of the new middleware data is completed, the controller checks whether an upgrade is successful by executing the new middleware data, and if the upgrade fails, the controller executes the previous middleware data pre-stored in the memory. Thus, the receiver upgrades the received middleware program in a stable manner.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an interactive medium and a method for managing additional contents synchronously outputted with audio/video (A/V) data in an interactive digital versatile disk (I-DVD). A player in which an interactive disk is seated accesses a server providing the additional contents of the A/V data recorded on the interactive disk before the interactive disk is reproduced, and receives updated information of the additional contents from the server. The player refers to the received updated information and determines whether an arbitrary file contained in an additional content list associated with the A/V data has been updated. The player makes a request for an original file contained in the list or an updated file designated in the updated information, and receives the requested original or updated file. Therefore, the player can always receive additional contents containing the updated file. According to this operation, the server enables the additional contents to be conveniently updated.
