Abstract: A digital broadcast receiver schedules the startup of its software on the basis of the number of data transfer channels and core processing units available to transfer the necessary programs into main storage and execute them, the execution priority order of the programs, the time required to transfer each necessary program into main storage, and the time required to initialize each program. If a snapshot startup option exists for a program, the initialization time is compared with the time required for transferring the snapshot of the program's working data and for further post-processing. Consideration of the data transfer times and initialization times as well as execution priority enables the shortest schedule to be determined.

Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a set top box having a controller to receive two-dimensional image content comprising a plurality of images, identify an object in a first image of the plurality of images, identify the object in a second image of the plurality of images, determine a perspective angle difference between the first and second images, generate a third image using the first and second images when the perspective angle difference satisfies a three-dimensional angle threshold, generate three-dimensional image content using the first image and the third image, and provide the three-dimensional image content to a display device operably coupled with the set top box. Abstract: A method and a system are put forth for providing regional content information to a user device (e.g., television, laptop, cell phone, etc.). In one example, the system provides content information messages that provide explanations of cultural peculiarities that may occur in the original media content (e.g., television programs, Internet streams, etc.). Accordingly, the system allows media content to be understood by various users who have different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract: A channel remapping pre-notification (RPN) message is transmitted in each of multiple frequencies prior to movement of data associated with one or more virtual channels to one or more different frequencies. The RPN message is also sent prior to transmission of a Virtual Channel Table (VCT) reflecting channel movement. If a receiving device is unable to find data associated with a selected channel subsequent to the channel movement, the stored RPN information can be used to identify a new frequency for that selected channel.

Abstract: Embodiments of a white space identifier are provided. According to one embodiment, the active channel information of a cable TV can be obtained through receiving and decoding a channel changing operation command from a remote control. The active channel information can then be transmitted to white space devices located within an interference range using a wireless transmitter. The wireless transmitter can be set to utilize a narrow fixed bandwidth.

Abstract: A device stores a plurality of applications and a list of associations for those applications. The applications are preferably stored within a secondary memory of the device, and once launched each application is loaded into RAM. Each application is preferably associated to one or more of the other applications. Preferably, no applications are launched when the device is powered on. A user selects an application, which is then launched by the device, thereby loading the application from the secondary memory to RAM. Whenever an application is determined to be associated with a currently active state application, and that associated application has yet to be loaded from secondary memory to RAM, the associated application is pre-launched such that the associated application is loaded into RAM, but is set to an inactive state.

In the invention, when a streaming signal of a predetermined format having video data and audio data is inputted to a streaming input terminal 10, separation unit 23 of a relay apparatus 2 separates this signal into the video data and audio data. HDMI transmitter 27 generates and outputs a streaming signal having the video data separated by the separation unit 23, of the same format as that of the streaming signal inputted to the streaming input terminal 10.

The apparatus includes: a signal processing unit which generates an audio/video (A/V) file, an application file, and a first electronic program guide (EPG) file by appropriately processing a plurality of A/V signals, application information, and EPG information, respectively, which are included in an input broadcast program transport stream; a synchronization unit which receives the A/V file, the application file, and the first EPG file from the signal processing unit, generates storage information for the A/V file and storage information for the application file, and converts the first EPG file into a second EPG file comprising the storage information for the A/V file and the storage information for the application file; and a storage unit which stores the A/V file, the application file, and the second EPG file.

Abstract: Various systems and methods allow supplemental information such as recipes, parts lists, instructions, notes, outlines or other information associated with a television program to be delivered in the same transport stream that carries the television program to the viewer. The transport stream includes at least two elementary streams, wherein the first elementary stream conveys video content associated with the television program and the second elementary stream conveys supplemental information that summarizes at least a portion of the television program. The device receiving the digital transport stream identifies the first and second elementary streams in the digital transport stream, processes the first elementary stream to present the video content associated with the television program to the viewer, and makes the supplemental information in the second elementary stream available to the viewer.

Abstract: A TV set signal switching box is provided. The switching box is connected between a TV set and a plurality of signal sources to enable the signal sources to transmit media signals with the TV set interactively. The signal switching box comprises a first interface and a second interface, the first interface is electrically connected to and communicates interactively with the TV set, and the second interface is electrically connected to a plurality of signal sources and outputs a power supply signal and a control signal to the signal sources.

Abstract: A host device interfacing with a point of deployment (POD) and a method of processing broadcast data are disclosed. Herein, an Internet Protocol (IP) physical interface unit receives an Ethernet frame including broadcast data; and a routing engine transforms the Ethernet frame to an IP packet when a destination address included in the Ethernet frame matches with an address of a pod and routs the transformed IP packet to an extended channel connected to the POD. Accordingly, it is possible to protect contents using a conditional access provided by the existing cable card and process broadcast data received on all types of transmission protocols including an IP protocol over a wired/wireless network using a channel provided for connection between the existing cable card and the host device.

The system further includes at least one sensing facility and a control facility within an input device configured to communicate with the processing subsystem. The sensing facility is configured to detect a first type of user input and a second type of user input. The control facility is communicatively coupled to the sensing facility and is further configured to provide a first control signal in response to detection of the first type of user input, and a second control signal in response to detection of the second type of user input. The processing subsystem is configured to execute a function associated with the sensing facility in response to the second control signal, and to provide a preview event for the function in response to the first control signal. The instruction receiver receives the extended reservation instruction transmitted from the receiver. A program recorder/reproducer records and/or reproduces the program data in accordance with the stored program reservation.

A receiving system of the digital broadcasting system includes a baseband processor unit receiving a broadcast signal including mobile service data and main service data, the mobile service data configuring an RS frame, the RS frame including the mobile service data and at least one signaling information data describing rating information of the mobile service data, a management processor unit obtaining the rating information of the mobile service data by parsing the signaling information data from the RS frame, the management processor unit determining a presence or non-presence of a viewing restriction by comparing the obtained rating information of the mobile service data to viewing restriction rating information set by a user, and a presentation processor unit blocking the mobile service data if the viewing restriction of the mobile service data is determined.

Abstract: A digital broadcasting system and a data processing method are disclosed. The digital broadcast receiving system includes a baseband processor, a management processor, and a presentation processor. The baseband processor receives a broadcast signal including mobile service data and main service data. Herein, the mobile service data configure a Reed-Solomon (RS) frame, and the RS frame includes mobile service data and at least one channel configuration information on the mobile service data. The management processor acquires simple guide information on at least one of a current program and a next program of a corresponding channel from the channel configuration information and stores the acquired simple guide information.

Abstract: Two or more set-top boxes are installed in a household. A communications link, preferably a physical link, is provided between or among the set-top boxes. One of the boxes is designated as a “master” box while the other box or boxes are “slaves.” The slave box will use the communications link to communicate in a secured and encrypted manner with the master box. If that communication is severed, e.g., if an attempt is made to move the slave box to another household to provide unauthorized service in that household, the slave box will stop working when it can no longer communicate with the master box.

Abstract: The invention comprises an application for recording and the playback of MPEG-2 transport-streams transmitted via DVB-systems with optical discs. Apart from audio- and video-signals, additional information (which describe the content of the DVB-multiplex) will also be transmitted in DVB-SI descriptors. These descriptors correspond to the incoming transport-stream-packets and can be used for comfortable features, like event-triggered start of a recording or automatic generation of play-lists.

Abstract: Systems, methods and devices are provided for enabling a wireless television network at a subscriber location in a subscriber television network, such as a cable or satellite television network. In general, a set top box apparatus is provided having a receiver configured to receive a media content signal from the television network, the media content signal being composed of a plurality of channels. The set top box comprises a plurality of tuners for tuning to various channels available in the media content signal. At least a first tuner of the plurality of tuners is operatively coupled to a radio frequency transmitter of the set top box. The radio frequency transmitter is configured to utilize an antenna to communicate a radio frequency signal for wirelessly communicating media content received by the first tuner to at least one remote television. In an embodiment, the set top box further includes at least one radio frequency remote control for controlling the tuning of the first tuner.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for dynamically adjusting advertisement (“ad”) time for a multicast channel. In one embodiment, a variable ad insertion function operates to receive one or more multicasts of media content from a core distribution network, insert ad timeslots into the media content, and optionally perform late-binding of ads to the ad timeslots. The media content including the inserted ad timeslots and late-binded ads, if any, is then multicast to associated client devices over a feeder network using corresponding multicast channels. For each multicast channel, insertion of ad timeslots into the associated media content is dynamically controlled based on the number of users currently consuming or predicted to consume the multicast channel, the number of client devices receiving or predicted to receive the multicast channel, or both.

The STB analyzes the XML file to obtain the TV program information and establishes a TV program table according to the TV program information.

Abstract: A method and system for dynamic channel management of a television based on media center set-top box tuner availability. The method includes determining a last channel a television was tuned to prior to being turned off. Then it is determined whether the last channel is a radio frequency remodulated (RF-remodulated) channel. If the last channel is a RF-remodulated channel, then sending a signal to indicate that the television is on line with the RF-remodulated channel. If a tuner is not available for the television, then receiving an indication of a cable channel that was last RF-remodulated to the RF-remodulated channel for the television. Abstract: An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programmable attenuation and a programmable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator.

Abstract: A fast channel switching method and apparatus for a digital broadcast receiver that can reduce a channel switching delay caused by limitations in real time broadcasting systems is provided. A fast channel switching method of the present invention includes simultaneously receiving broadcast signals of a first service channel and a second service channel; presenting the broadcast signal of the first service channel through a player; and circular-buffering the broadcast signal of the second service channel. A digital broadcast receiver using a fast channel switching technique of the present invention can buffer an adjacent service channel while serving the current service channel such that the buffered broadcast signal is output when the adjacent channel is selected, thereby reducing a channel switching delay.

Abstract: A closed-loop system for dynamically distributing memory bandwidth between real-time components and non-real-time components is provided. Specifically, the present invention includes monitors for measuring a performance of each of the real-time components. Based on the measured performance, closed-loop feedback loop is communicated to a unified memory system. The feedback is used by the memory controls within the unified memory system to efficiently and dynamically distribute memory bandwidth between the real-time and the non-real-time components.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast receiving apparatus, digital broadcast signals provided by a digital broadcast method are supplied to various types of external units and are effectively utilized. In the above apparatus, a descrambler descrambles a transport stream output from a front end unit and supplies it to a digital interface and a demultiplexer. The demultiplexer extracts from the transport stream a compressed video signal and a compressed audio signal of a program specified by a user, and supplies the extracted signals to an MPEG decoder. The MPEG decoder decompresses the supplied video signal and the audio signal and supplies them to the digital interface, an NTSC encoder, and an audio signal D/A converter. The digital interface supplies either of the transport stream or the decompressed data to a digital external unit under the control of the controller.

Abstract: A video decoding device receives video images encoded as video signal data for a selected one of multiple channels, for example provided by a cable TV or satellite TV service. Responsive to a request to switch from viewing a previously-selected channel to viewing a newly-selected channel, the video decoding device enters a first mode for displaying a preview representation of the video signal data received for the newly-selected channel. In this preview mode, video signal data for the newly-selected channel is received and stored, and a first available image from the video signal data is decoded and provided for display as a preview representation. The preview mode image is replaced by a real time representation of the video signal data once it is determined that the stored video signal data exceeds a threshold amount, for example an amount to compensate for maximum expected jitter.

Having access to information related to content viewing and to various types of user interactions provides a variety of benefits, with real-time or near real-time collection of such information enabling dynamic modifications to provided content, functionality, and services.

Abstract: Systems, devices, software, hardware and networks adapted and arranged for monitoring and correcting faults in networked media player systems that include electronic displays are provided. After detection or notification of a fault in at least one networked media player in a network of at least two, or N, media players operationally connected to electronic displays, the invention provides an alternate source of signal to the affected display. In some preferred embodiments, the invention utilizes at least one additional, or N+1, media player as a backup to substitute for the failed media player. Reconfiguration of the faulted media player by means of the N+1 backup networked media player advantageously increases the reliability and efficiency of ongoing maintenance of digital visual systems operating in commercial and other environments.
