Abstract: A mobile terminal having a digital broadcast reception function is provided. The mobile terminal includes a digital broadcast reception unit receiving one or more digital broadcasting service information having different broadcasting modes via different paths; a memory storing the digital broadcasting service information received via the digital broadcast reception unit and a metadata interface for mapping the digital broadcasting service information according to semantics; a control unit extracting the digital broadcasting service information from the memory using the metadata interface and generating a control signal for displaying the extracted result in a form that can be recognized by a user; and a display unit displaying the extracted result according to the control signal from the control unit.

Abstract: A digital broadcast transmitter includes a first de-multiplexing unit for separating video/audio data and real-time broadcast program information from a transport stream when a digital broadcast signal carries the transport stream; a first storage unit for storing the real-time broadcast program information; a second de-multiplexing unit for separating video/audio data and download broadcast content information from a download broadcast signal when the digital broadcast signal carries the download broadcast signal; a second storage unit for storing the download broadcast content information; a program guide generating unit for converting the download broadcast content information stored in the second storage unit into the real-time broadcast program information, forming electronic program guide display data together with the real-time broadcast program information stored in the first storage unit, and outputting the formed data.

Abstract: Guide information is provided relating to playing/viewing of content retrieved through various modalities such as television broadcasting and a computer network. A unified program list is created that comprehensively handles program content. For a self-recorded program, program metadata retrieved during a recording operation is additionally registered. For a network program, a network program list is periodically retrieved from a service site, modified and recorded. To play the content, a guide screen is created and supplied based on a unified program list. When a self-recorded program is selected, the program is read and played from an HDD. When a network program is selected, the program is played in a streaming manner via the Internet.

Abstract: Record history record processing accumulates all user operations relating to program recording in a storage as a recording history. Preference change analysis processing extracts recorded programs in the most recent period from the recording history, obtains the weight of a word in the recorded program from an index from an EPG, adds the weight of the word to a preference in a period. The preference in programs for a period immediately preceding the most recent period is normalized, and a degree of similarity to the preference in the most recent period is calculated. Preference query generation processing emphasizes (five-fold) the weight of the words contained in the recorded programs in the period (June) and generates a preference query.

Abstract: A digital broadcast receiver 1 capable of receiving a program broadcast by a plurality of services from among broadcast electric waves to which a single physical channel is assigned and provided with at least an I/O device (a display 18) is provided. The digital broadcast receiver includes a control unit (15) for determining whether or not there are identical services in services which the digital broadcast receiver has received in each of a plurality of regions, and for, when determining that there are identical services in the services, generating a service list for each of the regions (countries) or for each of the services (broadcast stations) while merging the physical channels, and then displaying the service list generated thereby on the I/O device to urge a viewer to perform a selection input.

Abstract: Provided is a method and apparatus for providing an integrated electronic program guide (EPG). An image display apparatus may receive signals from a plurality of input sources via at least one port, may identify the plurality of input sources, may receive EPG information of each of the plurality of input sources, and may generate an integrated EPG by integrating the received EPG information. Using the integrated EPG, a user of the image display apparatus may select and view all the contents that are provided by the plurality of input sources, without a need to select a predetermined input source.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of controlling a receiver. A group identifier or modulation and coding scheme is sent in a physical layer header. This group identifier or modulation and coding scheme, or both, determine whether the corresponding physical layer frame should be fully demodulated and decoded. If it is not necessary to fully demodulate and decode the physical layer frame, the receiver may disable its demodulator, decoder, or both. This results in a power savings. A hub device sends the group identifier or modulation and coding scheme in the physical layer header. This allows receivers that are not addressed by the group identifier, or modulation and coding scheme, to disable at least a portion of their circuitry. Disabling at least a portion of circuitry saves power consumption and dissipation. The hub device may also send control messages to tell the receiver which group identifiers, or modulation and coding schemes, they should respond to.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing custom video mosaic pages are provided. The custom pages may be locally-generated, remotely-generated, or partially locally-generated and partially remotely-generated. The custom pages may include local content, such as content recorded to a digital video recorder (DVR), overlaid on a multi-video composite feed. A local compositing system may render the mosaic pages and dynamically customize the pages based on user profile data, user preferences, and active user monitoring.

Abstract: A multimedia program recording schedule manager for DVR systems is described. In a first embodiment, for example, a method implemented by one or more server computing devices, the method comprising: receiving input selecting a particular DVR system; receiving input selecting a particular multimedia program for the particular DVR system to record on a repeat basis; adding the particular multimedia program to a server-side instance of a repeat recording schedule for the particular DVR system; and synchronizing the server-side instance of the repeat recording schedule with another instance of a repeat recording schedule for the particular DVR system resulting in the addition of the particular multimedia program to the other instance of the repeat recording schedule. In one embodiment, the other instance of the repeat recording schedule for the particular DVR system is a data component of the particular DVR system.

The reception apparatus includes an input unit and a processor. The input unit receives a channel selection from a user. Based on the determined source of content, the processor controls a first communication interface to receive first content or a second communication interface to receive second content. The content can be a song in a digital format, for example. Selecting the content can include consideration of user preference information and using one or more of: a content manager, a device manager, a network controller, a purchase controller, a device supporter, a content directory, a connection manager, and a digital rights management (DRM) controller. The user input device can include, for example, a remote control device for a home entertainment system.

Abstract: The apparatus and method of the present invention provides a system for reducing the amount of information displayed in an on-screen television program guide. The user selects a genre by pressing a genre labeled button on a remote control. The remote control transmits an infrared signal to a set top box. The set top box then filters program guide data received from a satellite dish according to the selected genre and displays only channels and/or shows associated with the selected genre.

Abstract: A DVR, server, or other agent correlates media metadata from diverse sources, like an EPG data provider and multiple video-on-demand (VOD) service providers. Metadata sets from different sources are compared in order to attempt to identify identical programs to which the metadata sets pertain. From at least one metadata set, information about the program that the other metadata set lacks is selected. A “canonical” data structure instance for the program is created. The information that is lacking from at least one of the metadata sources is inserted into that instance. For each source from which a program is available, the DVR stores the identity of that source on the DVR's persistent storage device in association with the canonical data structure instance for that program. The DVR receives search criteria from a user and then searches the stored canonical data structure instance for programs that satisfy the criteria.

Selectable program guide options may be displayed in the same column as the program guide category with which they are associated. A highlight region may be positioned on one of the selectable program guide options. The selectable program guide options may be scrolled using a pair of vertical cursors.

Abstract: A system and methods for acquiring scheduled television programs with coinciding program times. One method includes initially identifying that a conflict exists to acquire the scheduled television programs. Once the conflict is identified, the method identifies one or more alternate sources that contain the scheduled television programs. Acquisition schedules are generated and optimized. Then, at least one of the scheduled television programs are recorded from one of the alternate sources. A user may set user preferences to customize how the system will generate potential acquisition schedules.

Abstract: A scheduled broadcast time is retrieved for a program that is to be delivered in advance of the scheduled broadcast time, wherein the scheduled broadcast time is associated with a program content identifier for the program. Prior to the scheduled broadcast time, a pre-cast channel is selected on a network by selecting at least one of a currently unused channel or a dedicated pre-cast channel. Prior to the scheduled broadcast time, a signal is sent for placing a viewer program storage device into a pre-cast mode, such that viewing of the pre-cast channel is disabled. Prior to the scheduled broadcast time, the program is delivered to the viewer program storage device over the pre-cast channel, wherein the delivered program is associated with the program content identifier and a time stamp for disabling playback of the delivered program until arrival of the scheduled broadcast time.

The remote control device may also include a display screen, wherein the remote control device receives data from the playback unit for display on the display screen. Abstract: To provide convenience to usage of an electronic program guide, known as EPG, the present invention provides a method of sharing channel information for a client device coupled to a server including a plurality of communities. The method includes the following steps. A plurality of channels is received to generate a first program list. Community information corresponding to the device is obtained. One of the communities of the server is selected according to the community information. The first program list is then uploaded to the selected community.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed herein for merging EPG data associated with a variety of program sources. In one aspect, EPG data is accessed for different program sources and rules are selected that define how entries in the EPG data are to be merged. The rules may be selected based on whether the EPG data was collected in-band or out-of-band. In addition, the merging rules can be dependent on the program source, which allows the flexibility of applying different rules to different program sources. The EPG data from the different program sources is merged into a single EPG based on the selected rules.

Abstract: A method of providing program recommendations is disclosed that includes receiving a plurality of recommendations related to a television program listed by an electronic program guide from a plurality of first set-top box devices. Further, the method includes receiving a request for the electronic program guide from a second set-top box device. The method also includes determining an aggregated total of the plurality of recommendations, wherein a weighting factor is applied to each recommendation received from one of the plurality of first set-top box devices that is associated with a community related to the second set-top box device.

Abstract: Techniques are described that permit the flexible introduction of branding elements into or around video rendered by a media player. One or more sets of metadata related to the presentation of branding elements may be collected, and then one or more sets of the metadata may be selected based on business rules when the media player requests a particular piece of content. The selected metadata may indicate what branding element is to be displayed, and how it is to be displayed (e.g., position of element in video rendering window). The media player is then instructed based on the metadata to access and appropriately place the branding elements in or outside of the video rendering window (e.g., overlayed on top of the video content).

Abstract: A method of providing improved quality of Internet Protocol (IP) video content over the Internet involves, for an item of content, calculating a score representative of a likelihood that a particular viewer will order the item of content; if the score is greater than a threshold score T, then downloading a portion of the item of content from a content provider, and storing the portion of the item of content in a storage location local to the viewer; if the viewer elects to view the item of video content, then: retrieving the stored portion of the item of video content, streaming an augmentation to the stored portion of the item of video content from the content provider, and combining the stored portion with the augmentation of the stored portion to produce an improved resolution version of the item of video content. The master appliance conveys to the controlling device the state information and the controlling device uses the state information to dynamically configure itself to command functional operations of one or more of the plurality of appliances. The master appliance also causes a graphical representation of the current configuration of the controlling device to be displayed on a display device that is associated with the master appliance.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for using DVD subpicture formatted information within a MPEG data stream to provide data channel information to a television receiver. More particularly, the television receiver comprises a MPEG decoder and a DVD subpicture processor. The MPEG decoder decodes the MPEG stream and extracts the DVD subpicture formatted signal and the DVD subpicture decoder processes one or more DVD subpicture bitstreams to produce DVD graphics. The DVD subpicture bitstream is used to carry and display data channel information such as stock quotes, electronic program guide information, advertisement information, and the like as well as provide interactive menuing functions.

Abstract: A digital television (DTV) receiver retrieves, from a memory, a standardized hostname and a standardized filename for a web-based service for providing a channel map associated with service providers. The DTV receiver adds, to the standardized hostname, a name for a particular service provider and sends, to a data server, a request for channel map information, where the request is based on the standardized hostname, the name for the particular service provider, and the standardized filename. The DTV receiver receivers, from the data server, a channel map file based on the standardized filename and extracts information from the channel map file to present to a user.

Abstract: A system on chip (SOC) and method displays a graphical user interface (GUI) in a video. The SOC receives a video from the video input device and a GUI from the GUI circuit, and saves the video into a first frame buffer of the SOC and the GUI into a second frame buffer in the SOC. A combined video is generated by combining the video from the first frame buffer and the GUI from the second frame buffer and sent to the display device to display the combined video.

Abstract: Partial data related to information data is received, image data corresponding to the received partial data is generated by sequentially processing the received partial data, and the generated image data is output to a display unit. Before output of the image data corresponding to the partial data to the display unit is completed, reception of the information data is started. Then, image data corresponding to the information data is generated by processing the received information data, and image data to be displayed on said display unit is switched to the image data corresponding to the information data from the image data corresponding to the partial data after the reception of the information data is started.

Abstract: A method and system for generating electronic program guides is provided. The method comprises: sharing Electronic Program Guides (EPG) data among at least one terminal and at least two service providers (SPs) interconnected over network; searching the shared EPG data; and generating EPG for the terminal according to the searched EPG data and the customization information provided by the terminal. The system comprises at least two SPs and at least one terminal interconnected over network, where at least two SPs of the at least two SPs are provided with a middleware, and EPG data is shared among SPs or between SPs and terminals through the middleware, and at least one terminal of the at least one terminal is provided with a middleware. In embodiments of the present invention, an individualized EPG is generated according to requirements of a terminal by sharing EPG data and summarizing EPG data from a plurality of SPs.

Abstract: To add new additional content to the reproduction schedule on the basis of reference content scheduled in a time slot in the reproduction schedule, a digital television in accordance with the present invention includes: an additional content extracting section for identifying, as the additional content, content associated with content information which meets conditions determined on the basis of content information of the reference content; and a placement position determining section for determining, based on time slot determining procedure information based on which a time slot is determined for the additional content related to the reference content, a time slot for the additional content identified by the additional content identifying means. The digital television therefore produces an optimal reproduction schedule to the user.

Abstract: The invention relates to a set-top box receiver allowing access to interactive digital TV coming from any IP-network. It makes use of the SAP/SDP protocols as a logic link between “classic” DVB services (satellite, terrestrial, cable) and IP services. The invention allows providing TV services relying on existing Internet architecture. Simulation means are provided, in the MHP middleware, for building an Event Information Table upon the SDP messages. Specific preview information is added to the SDP messages so that they can be linked to a DVB service.

Abstract: A device for provisioning, retrieving, and using data guide information transmitted in a digital broadcast signal is disclosed. A receiver receives the digital broadcast signal which includes digital television programming packets multiplexed with data packets and thereafter routes the received signal to a demodulator. The demodulator provides a demodulated signal to a detector which identifies data packets contained therein. A processor then determines the types of data in the data packets, as well as the respective channels on which the identified types of data are transmitted. The processor prepares a menu for a display screen enabling a user to select the channel of interest, and enables the user to be connected accordingly.
