  • Patent number: 5271293
Abstract: A knob assembly is disclosed for a control unit of a medical apparatus with a front panel. In order to transfer a turning setting movement through the front panel, a feed-through sleeve is rotatably arranged in the front panel and a knob core is movably arranged in the feed-through sleeve. On the control side of the front panel the feed-through sleeve and the knob core are enclosed by a manipulable element which, through application of pressure, can axially move the knob core in the feed-through sleeve. The knob core on the back side of the front panel moves a resilient locking washer from a locking position to an unlocked position so that turning of the manipulable element also will turn the feed-through sleeve. To improve the sealing at the feed-through location, the front panel is provided with a protection plate which is beaded outwards and surrounding the feed-through sleeve, with the manipulable element tightly enclosing the beaded protection.

  • Patent number: 5218879
Abstract: A lost motion drive assembly has a base mounting upper and lower levers which connect to the louvers of an air plenum, such as in an automobile's ventilation system. A user turns a knob between a plurality of selections, causing a gear-operated actuator to rotate. A clutch mechanism operable between the actuator and levers engages the lower lever to drive it one way in response to rotation of the knob. Upon continued rotation of the knob, a drive lug on the actuator engages the upper lever to drive it the same way while the clutch disengages from the actuator and holds the lower lever fixed. Reverse motion is obtained when the clutch engages the actuator and upper lever, after which it releases the actuator and a second drive lug engages the lower lever to return it to its starting position.

  • Patent number: 4955253
Abstract: A control mechanism having a dial and cooperating structure for selectively locking the dial in any one of a plurality of angularly related positions. The locking mechanism is configured to provide a force or manipulating characteristic precluding operation thereof by accident or by young children, such as infants, thereby effectively precluding undesired resetting of the associated control mechanism. The locking structure is formed integrally with the respective relatively movable parts of the mechanism, including the structure for providing the biasing of the locking mechanism to the locking disposition. The locking mechanism is resiliently biased and includes a graspable portion which when grasped to effect movement of the control overcomes the resilient biasing. The biasing structure automatically relocks the dial upon release of the graspable portion.

  • Patent number: 4953423
Abstract: To effectively absorb shocks applied to both a rim and a cover pad of a steering wheel simultaneously or separately in spite of a simple construction, the steering wheel comprises a shock absorbing member disposed under the cover pad and sandwiched between upper and lower plates, and a spoke fixing plate for connecting radially inner ends of spokes to a middle peripheral surface of the shock absorbing member. A shock applied to the rim is mainly absorbed by the lower portion of the absorbing member by shearing deformation thereof and a shock applied to the cover pad is mainly absorbed by the upper portion of the absorbing member by compressive deformation thereof. Further, to uniformly absorb shocks applied to the cover pad at various points and in different directions, a support base having a projection is disposed under the lower plate (on which the shock absorbing member is arranged) to reduce the rigidity of the shock absorbing member.

Abstract: A rotary control knob is adapted to provide for automatic switching between two modes of movement control for a tape transport. An insulative ring surrounds a conductive knob, and the conductive knob is electrically connected to an oscillator circuit. Changes in the oscillator frequency due to operator contact with the conductive knob during movement of the knob are sensed to produce one mode of movement control, while movement of the knob due to operator contact with the insulative ring do not affect the oscillator frequency and indicate an alternative, default mode of movement control. A stepper motor is mechanically coupled to the control knob, and is electrically engaged in the default mode and disengaged in the one mode.

  • Patent number: 4923325
Abstract: A molded knob of the type which frictionally engages and slips over the end of a shaft. The knob has a hub with a shaft-receiving socket formed therein. Elongated fingers, which are formed as part of the hub, extend into the socket to engage the shaft. In one embodiment of the invention, a pair of elongated fingers extend generally radially into the socket, with each finger terminating in a tip located close to but out of contact with the top of the other finger. The tips of the fingers are contacted by the curved outer surface of the shaft when the shaft is inserted in the socket to compress the fingers. If desired, the fingers can be designed to bend them into contact with each other so that the loading from one finger to the other acts like a truss. In a second embodiment of the invention, the elongated fingers are curved non-radially relative to the shaft and extend toward each other, terminating short of contact with the tips of each other.

  • Patent number: 4920823
Abstract: In known rotary knobs, an intermediate part and a universal joint are arranged between a base member and a switching handle that can be connected thereto for compensating position deviations between the longitudinal axes of the base member of the rotary knob and of an actuation shaft of a control device or the like. The new rotary knob can be manufactured and mounted in a simplified manner and can satisfactorily compensate for position deviations. The switching handle can be connected to the base member essentially so as to be locked against rotation and the base member has a bearing part with snapping means for a connection with a housing part. The rotary knob can be used, for example, on front sides or operating desks of domestic apparatuses or for operating program control devices.
