Patent number: 6029696Abstract: An air bleed device for a rigid closed housing having a vent hole in a vehicle power transmission system has a baffle portion and a vent portion, connected through a neck portion. In use, the baffle portion is positioned inside the housing and is significantly larger than the vent hole, so it may not be deformed sufficiently to pass through the vent hole. The baffle portion is a pair of planar pieces held in spaced apart relationship by a wall portion which runs along the periphery of the planar pieces and leaves an opening to give access to a plenum between the planar pieces. An outer surface of one of the planar pieces rests against the inner wall of the housing. The vent portion has a collar with a decreasing diameter which may be pulled through the vent hole in a deformed manner and a lower flange-like surface of the collar rests against the outer wall of the housing. When installed in the vent hole, the neck portion provides a frictional fit due to its outside diameter.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Gregory L. Patent number: 6029532Abstract: A gear reduction system is provided including two-stage gear reducers that may be converted to three-stage gear reducers by addition of a modular input stage. The modular input stage converts the input stage of the two-stage reducers to an intermediate stage of the three-stage reducers. Gearing, preferably including both drive pinions and driven gears, of the input stages of the two-stage reducers are used in the intermediate stages of the three-stage reducers, thereby reducing the overall number of parts needed for a family or series of reducers. Gearing is also common between input (and intermediate) stages of smaller gear reducers and modular input stages used with larger gear reducers, further reducing the number of different parts. The two-stage reducers and modular input stages of the three-stage reducers are preferably driven by modular transmission adapters that support the drive pinions of the input stages.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1997Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Reliance Electric Industrial CompanyInventor: Allyn E. Patent number: 6010424Abstract: This transmnission differential of the type comprising a two-piece differential case defined by a cup-shaped case member and a side member integrally formed with a ring gear to thereby increase the strength of the ring gear and case. The side member is bolted onto the cup-shaped case member. The pinion gears of this invention are not formed with a spherical portion at its interface with the case because the present invention provides a novel design that does not require the spherical radii because the two-piece case can easily be assembled with resort to these additional machining requirements. The pinion shaft is secured against rotation by a pin trapped in a bore formed in the case when the ring gear side member is mounted to the cup-shaped case member. Because the cup-shaped case member is formed with a flat mating surface, the present invention does not require eyebrows formed into the case for drilling points where the bolt is received in the case.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1998Date of Patent: January 4, 2000Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Earl James Irwin

Patent number: 5924504Abstract: An automotive vehicle suspension unit assembly located near the sides of a vehicle includes a driving axle shaft, a gear box, an electric motor, and a suspension beam. The driving axle shaft, which drives a wheel hub of the vehicle, defines an axis of rotation about which the wheel hub rotates. The gear box includes a pinion shaft connected to a pinion gear which meshes with a ring gear. The pinion shaft is driven by a motor drive shaft which extends outwardly from the electric motor. The motor generates the torque necessary to drive the driving axle shaft. As known, suspension beams extend transversely to the axis of rotation of the driving axle shaft. The electric motor is pivotally attached to the gear box by means of a flexible coupling and is pivotally attached to the suspension beam by means of a movable connection.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1997Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, LLCInventors: Malcolm F. Patent number: 5921151Abstract: An integrated hydrostatic transmission has a housing comprised of two separable elements detachably joined together along a substantially horizontal parting plane. A hydrostatic transmission including a hydrostatic pump, a hydrostatic motor, and a center section is separately mounted within the housing. The center section comprises a generally L-shaped member having a hydrostatic pump and motor mounting surfaces thereon disposed at right angles to each other. A pair of fluid ports is on each of the mounting surfaces, and internal passageways are in the L-shaped member connecting each of the fluid ports on one of the mounting surfaces with one of said fluid ports being on the other of the mounting surfaces. The L-shaped member comprises first and second legs integrally joined and extending at right angles to each other, with the first leg normally extending in a horizontal direction, and the second leg normally extending in a vertical direction.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1998Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignee: Sauer Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. Patent number: 5913523Abstract: A method and device for repairing a leak between a channel member through which an axle passes and a cover member of a vehicular transmission or otherwise between inner and outer members. The diameter of the opening in the cover member for the axle is greater than the diameter of the channel through the channel member thereby providing a surface portion of the channel member which is uncovered by the cover member. A plate is installed to sealingly bear against both the cover member and the uncovered surface of the channel member, with sealing material disposed between the bearing surfaces. The plate, which has an aperture for also receiving the axle, has a first surface for sealingly bearing against the uncovered surface of the channel member. This first surface is raised (axially inwardly from) from a second surface which sealingly bears against the cover member. In order to eliminate the necessity otherwise of removing the axle, the plate is alternatively a split plate.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Inventor: Leon C. Selapack
