  • Patent number: 6691599
Abstract: A cutter guard device is adapted for use in a belt saw machine, and includes a stationary hinge leaf formed with a first knuckle unit, a movable hinge leaf formed with a second knuckle unit, and a hinge pin extending through the first and second knuckle units, thereby permitting rotation of the movable hinge leaf between cutter concealing and cutter exposing positions. The movable hinge leaf is further slidable along the hinge pin between retaining and pivoting positions. The movable hinge leaf is movable between the cutter concealing and cutter exposing positions when disposed in the pivoting position on the hinge pin. A retention unit retains releasably the movable hinge leaf in the cutter concealing position when the latter is further disposed in the retaining position on the hinge pin.

  • Patent number: 4867055
Abstract: A guard at the inlet side of the nip of two rolls in a calender or a like machine has an elongated support which is mounted in the machine frame for movement toward and away from the rolls at the inlet side of the nip. The support carries two elongated strips each of which is adjacent one of the rolls and has several sections. The support carries discrete moving mechanisms for the sections of each strip regardless of whether the sections are discrete sections or such sections form parts of a one-piece strip. This renders it possible to select and alter the width of the entire clearance between each strip and the periphery of the respective roll regardless of eventual deformation of the support and/or of the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4572346
Abstract: A power press is comprised of a frame, a stationary bed, a ram reciprocally movable toward and away from the bed and a safety guard for preventing movement of the ram toward the ram when the tooling for the press must be repaired or changed. The guard includes a first chain attached to the frame of the press and a second chain attached to the ram and attachable to the first chain to restrict movement of the ram toward the bed. The chains are connectable together at a plurality of locations to enable the combined, attached length of the chains to be adjusted. The adjustability permits the guard to be easily used with a press having a range of shut heights. A normally open power circuit controls the reciprocal movement of the ram. A key for closing the circuit by engagement with a receptacle in the circuit is attached to the first chain. The key is engageable with the receptacle when the chains are unattached and is not engageable with the receptacle when the chains are attached.

  • Patent number: 4373406
Abstract: A machine tool has a pallet transfer system comprising a rotary deck having a pair of pallets oppositely disposed about a vertical rotary transfer axis, wherein at the transfer position, the pallets are further movable along a horizontal linear transfer axis toward and away from the pallet transfer system. A vertical guard plate is affixed to the rotatable section or deck of the transfer system, and the plane of the guard plate passes through the rotary transfer axis at an oblique angle to the linear transfer axis. The rotatable guard plate interacts with an elastomeric seal at the interface of a guard opening in a stationary guard assembly on a machine tool to substantially confine coolant overspray and the like within the machine guard enclosure. By passing obliquely across the linear transfer axes of the pair of parallel pallets, substantially full access of a stationary pallet lying outside the machine guard enclosure may be had.

  • Patent number: 4363267
Abstract: A vertical baler includes a housing defining a compacting chamber which receives a vertically moveable and power operated horizontal platen. The chamber has a front opening, and the lower portion of the chamber is closed by a pivotal door member which is secured to the cabinet by a latch mechanism including two separate pivotal members releasably connected by an over-center lock element. The upper part of the opening is closed by a vertical safety gate member which retracts upwardly and is partially counterbalanced by a torsion coil spring having one end portion secured to the housing. The other end portion of the coil spring is connected to a shaft supporting a pair of winch members around which are wrapped corresponding cables connected to the lower portion of the gate member.

  • Patent number: 4357839
Abstract: Operator access to the zone at which workpieces are struck in a drop hammer is temporarily but reliably blocked by a sturdy mechanical guard throughout every period when the hammer may commence and complete its fall; a unique physical linkage, between the guard and a safety-dog lever which must be manually turned in order to release the hammer, insures that the safety guard must have been shifted from an out-of-the-way position into a protective orientation before the hammer can drop.

  • Patent number: 4325186
Abstract: Protection device adapted for use with a vertical blade cutter comprising a cutting blade. The device comprises a moveable plate for covering the blade and protecting against accidental contact with the blade. The moveable plate is adapted to be retracted during cutting and is further adapted to be otherwise lowered in front of the blade. A bar is provided which is adapted to slide in a guide adapted to be attached to the cutter. The moveable plate is mounted on the bar. A plate support is journaled onto the guide. A rotatable wheel is attached to the plate support. The rotatable wheel, when brought into contact with the bar while rotating, is adapted to raise the bar and moveable plate and whereas disengagement of the wheel from the bar causes the moveable plate to be lowered in front of the blade by virtue of its own weight and that of the plate.

  • Patent number: 4195722
Abstract: A circuit interconnecting a source of electrical energy with a power operated machine. The circuit comprises an interlock device including a motion switch which is adapted to be removably attached to the machine operator's body. The motion switch is movable between a normally deactivated position to prevent the flow of electrical energy from the source to the machine and an activated position to permit the flow of electrical energy from the source to the machine for operating the machine. The motion switch is operable to be moved to the activated position in response to movement of the operator's body.

  • Patent number: 4179987
Abstract: Safety apparatus for a bacon press or the like including a transparent safety door movable vertically between a raised retracted position in which a slab of bacon or other work to be pressed may be readily placed in the press and in which a pressed slab of bacon or the like may be removed from the press, and a lowered position in which access to the movable parts of the press is blocked. Movement of the safety door from its raised to its lowered position initiates operation of the press. Partial opening of the door during operation of the press immediately stops the press. The door is automatically raised at the end of an operating cycle of the press. The safety apparatus also includes the provision of safety screens which may be readily raised and locked in their raised position to permit access to the press and which may be readily lowered.

  • Patent number: 3996815
Abstract: A safety guard structure including a guard member adapted to be interposed between a mechanism such as a punch press and the operator thereof to protect the operator from injury. In one form of the invention the guiding frame for guiding the guard member between its upper and lower positions is swingably connected to the mechanism to be guarded to permit the entire guiding frame to be swung upwardly so as to present no interference when it is desired to modify the mechanism or to change the dies thereof. In another form of the invention the guide structure for the guard member is entirely positioned above the area to be protected so as to present no interference when it is necessary for operators to work around the machine. An interlocking device is provided to prevent operation of the mechanism except when the guard member and its guide structure are in proper operating position.
