  • Patent number: 9623533
Abstract: Apparatus and method for sharpening a tool. In accordance with some embodiments, a selected side surface of the tool is placed in contacting engagement against an upper reverse sharpening guide surface that faces an abrasive surface extending along a first plane. The upper reverse sharpening guide surface is aligned along a second plane that intersects the first plane at an acute angle. A tool cutting edge contactingly engages a non-abrasive support surface disposed between the upper reverse sharpening guide surface and the abrasive surface to establish a plunge depth of the tool prior to contact with the abrasive surface. The tool is thereafter moved away from the upper reverse sharpening guide in a lateral direction across the abrasive surface while nominally maintaining the tool at the acute angle to sharpen the cutting edge in a trailing cutting edge orientation.

  • Patent number: 5431070
Abstract: This invention is a blade guide to allow the angle that the blade addresses a sharpening rod to be repeatedly and accurately re-established. This is accomplished through the provision of a guide plate outwardly projecting from the sharpening rod with a guide arm thereon. When the blade is placed with the back of the blade at the juncture between the guide plate and the guide arm, and the cutting edge of the blade against the sharpening rod the angle the blade addresses the sharpener can repeatedly be re-established before each sharpening stroke of such blade against the sharpener. Once this correct angle is established, it can be maintained even through the blade is no longer engaged with the guide. By making the guide arms adjustable longitudinally along the guide plate, the optimum angle can be set for an infinite number of different sizes of blades. Also indicia is provided on the guide plate so that the proper location of the guide arm can be readily determined by reference to such indicia.

  • Patent number: 5431597
Abstract: A hand held skate blade sharpening tool has a rotatable sharpening stone retained within a channel-shaped body member. Removable pins mounted on the body are located adjacent the outer ends of the stone to limit longitudinal movement of the stone within a channel of the body member. The body member has an access slot extending radially from the stone. Elongated guides projecting upwardly adjacent the slot are transversely spaced at a distance substantially the same as the width of the skate blade to guide and limit lateral movement of the blade within the slot. A transverse groove interrupting the slot and guides is open to the channel exposing the stone. This enables the stone to be manually rotated within the channel to rotate an unused sharpening surface into alignment with the slot.
