Abstract: A pawl disengagement tool intended for use with a slack adjuster has an elongated handle with a first end and an opposite second end, and a longitudinal axis extending from the first end to the second end. A slotted aperture formed at the first end includes a hole with a diameter that is greater than the first diameter of the pawl cap. A first slot extends from the hole and has a width that is greater than the second diameter of the pawl shaft of the pawl assembly of the slack adjuster. A portion of the tool defining the hole includes a chamfered periphery. The chamfered periphery defines an inclined plane leading to the first slot. The inclined plane has a thickness that increases up to a thickness equal to a disengagement thickness. The disengagement thickness is effective to cause disengagement of the pawl assembly. The second end of the tool includes a forked end that includes a pair of parallel spaced apart wedge-shaped prongs. In use, the forked end or slotted aperture is manipulated (e.g.

The angle between the two jaw faces is extremely shallow to create a “snap-action” geometry. The serrated diverging section may be arcuate or a slightly inclined. Both types of diverging section are designed to reduce slipping and are connected to rear corners of the fastener-engaging cavity that are designed and positioned to avoid contact with the rear side corners of the fastener. Arcuate rear side corners of the wrench cavity avoid contact with the rear side corners of the fastener and avoid stress concentration points. This arrangement reduces an operation force required for rotating the wrenching tool and accordingly the load acting on each of the torque transmitting portions, in comparison with a conventional hexagonal head. That is, it is possible to reduce the diameter of the head portion of the threaded fastener and the size and weight of the head portion, while avoiding deformation of the side wall surfaces through which the torque is transmitted.

The throat that connects the corners has two gentle curves or flat surfaces leading to a central arc. This modified “U” design provides more metal in the throat of the wrench, which stiffens the jaws.

  • Patent number: 6899000
Abstract: A wrench includes an open end which includes two jaws and a connection portion connected between the two jaws. A clamping portion is defined in an inside of each jaw and located close to a first side of each jaw. A loose portion is defined in the inside of each jaw and located close to a second side of each jaw. A width between the two respective loose portions of the two jaws is wider than a width between the two respective clamping portions of the two jaws. A pushing tongue is located between the two jaws. A nut can be clamped by the clamping portions of the two jaws by compressing the pushing tongue, and is freely rotatable relative to the open end when located in a space enclosed by the loose portions.

  • Patent number: 6840139
Abstract: An improved tool for use in association with a deformable nut of a fastener includes a socket having inner surface that forms a cavity on the socket. The inner surface includes one or more engagement surfaces that are tapered inwardly at an angle that approaches a taper of a deformable wall of the deformable nut. In one embodiment the tapering of the engagement surfaces is provided by configuring the engagement surfaces to extend in a tapered fashion generally toward a central axis of the socket. In another embodiment, the tapering is provided by configuring the engagement surfaces to each extend in a spiral fashion about a spiral axis that may, for example, be parallel and spaced-apart from the central axis of the socket.

Abstract: A wrench for use in connection with a lock nut including outwardly extending protrusions. The wrench includes a base portion and a finger and an engagement tab extending from the base portion. The finger is spaced from the engagement portion with a recess provided between the finger and the engagement portion. To rotate the nut, the finger is positioned over the top surface of the nut. The engagement tab is angled downwardly relative to the finger to engage the outwardly extending protrusions of the nut.

  • Patent number: 6820521
Abstract: A tool for driving headed fasteners has an opening in the tool. The opening is defined by a wall of the tool. The wall has a plurality of flat planar surfaces. The planar surfaces are connected by a connection at the ends of each planar surface to define the opening. Each connection surface has a convex surface continuous with the planar surface. A concave surface is continuous with the convex surface. The convex and concave surfaces define arcs with the arcs having the same radius.
