  • Publication number: 20020100346
Abstract: A left hand helical flute crosses right hand threads on a pin inserted into a hole in materials to be joined. A nut smoothly cooperating with the pin threads has a top portion that has three convex, equilateral sides meeting at apices capping their deformable crests. To work the nut, three irregular faces of six within a socket first apply tangential torque at locations near the nut apices. Tightening develops resistance and as the rotating nut slows down, the socket's irregular faces displace nut crest material circumferentially. Torque rises and demand reaches maximum when the socket faces coincide with the nut apices. Thereafter, the nut stops rotating, and the working surfaces move toward disengagement. Torque dips, but rises again when three flat faces of the socket take a second pass at residual nut crest material.

  • Patent number: 6393950
Abstract: The tools (wrenches) of this invention provide a one color instant identification of color coded tools. Preferably, the tools have a portion of their outer surface colored. Typically, the color impregnates the metal or plating during the manufacturing process. Another embodiment is a colored applique, band or sleeve on the outer surface of the tools. The key of this coloring is to identify the tool quickly by coloring a large area of the tool. This provides for quick identification of the tool even if the numerical designations are illegible because of small sizing or dirt obliteration. In a preferred embodiment, virtually the entire tool is colored during manufacturing. In another preferred embodiment, large raised numbers combine with the overall color scheme to make the tools quickly identifiable. Dirting the large colored surface is very unlikely as is obliterating the large raised fractional numbers.

Abstract: A set of driver bits for Robertson screw fasteners includes driver bits (10a-d) whose shaft bodies (12a-d) have distinctive markings thereon corresponding to respective sizes of working tips (14a-d) of the driver bits. These distinctive markings are consistent throughout a family of sets. In one embodiment the distinctive marking are different colors, with each different color corresponding to a working-tip size. The colors are applied only to shaft bodies (36a-d) of some of the driver bits by plating the shaft bodies with zinc layers (22) and then dying the outer surfaces of the zinc layers with color dye (24). This coloring is carried out before the shaft bodies are connected to their respective working tips. Once the outer surfaces (20) of the shaft bodies are thusly colored, the respective working tips are swaged to the shaft bodies to thereby form color-coded Robertson driver bits.

  • Patent number: 6257098
Abstract: A collation feature permits rapid substitution of like size tool members between the families of tools by comparison of a common visual indicator assigned to commonly sized members of analogous tools having differing structural configuration. The visual indicia, advantageously disposed in a prominent position on the tool for unobstructed viewing, and includes at least one non-numerical identifying parameter, in the form of a color, combination of colors, and/or recognizable pattern. When a user of such tools discovers that he requires a different style wrench better suited to the application, he simply notes the pattern or color marked on the tool he is using and requests, for example, that his assistant hand him a differently configured tool designed for performing the same tool operation and carrying the same visually recognizable marking.

Abstract: A method is provided for processing a handle tool. Raw material formed into the hand tool is firstly hardened by heat treatment. A surface of the hand tool is polished after hardening. A layer of metal is deposited on the surface of the polished hand tool to provide an anti-rust effect and/or anti-corrosion effect. A local area of the layer of metal deposition on the surface of the hand tool that is grasped during use is sanded to provide an anti-slide section. A numerical size area of the hand tool is covered by a local sanding mask before local sanding to thereby form a clear numerical size mark in the local area after local sanding.

  • Patent number: 6227078
Abstract: An engine oil filter socket wrench with built-in spillage cup contains the oil that normally spills out when an oil filter is removed from an engine. The device consists of a smaller first cylinder for gripping an oil filter base and a larger second cylinder built concentrically around and above the smaller cylinder and forming a cup shaped reservoir capable of containing oil spillage. Protuberances projecting radially inward from the inside surface of the larger cylinder terminate in loose contact at the filter surface to provide alignment of the device about the filter and to provide a second means to grip the filter. The larger cylinder can be constricted of flexible material capable of being squeezed by hand to create a frictional grip on the oil filter body for the purpose of initially loosening the filter from its mount.

  • Patent number: 6198049
Abstract: Ends of several electrical wires are joined by a connector which is twisted onto the wire to a predefined torque level by using a unique tool socket. The connector has a body with closed end and an open end for receiving the electrical wires. At least a portion of the hollow body has an equilateral polygonal cross section shape formed by side surfaces which meet at corner sections. The tool socket includes a coupling through which torque is applied and has an aperture for receiving the connector. The aperture has a cross-sectional shape such that the tool socket engages only the connector corner sections and a space exists between the connector side surfaces and the socket. That engagement concentrates torque applied by the tool socket to the connector which causes the corner sections to round upon application of more than the predefined torque level, thus preventing excessive torque from being applied to the connector and the wires.
