Sliding Side Jaw Patents (Class 81/165)
  • Patent number: 7377198
Abstract: A powered adjustable jaw wrench comprises a wrench body having a handle portion and a head portion defining a stationary jaw, a movable jaw reciprocally mounted to the head portion, a driven mechanism operably connected to the movable jaw, and a drive mechanism mounted to the body member and including a power source and an indexing mechanism. The driven mechanism includes a worm driving the movable jaw and an indexing wheel operably connected to the worm gear. The indexing mechanism is driven by the power source and includes an oscillating pallet member. The pallet member incrementally drives the indexing wheel so as to convert an oscillating movement of the pallet member into an incremental rotatable movement of the indexing wheel.

  • Patent number: 7373735
Abstract: A device and method for rapid hardware sizing includes a ruler-like body having a fixed end and a distal end, a fixed jaw at the fixed end, and a sliding jaw opposite the fixed jaw being slidably connected to the body such that the sliding jaw slides there along from a point immediately adjacent to the fixed jaw to the distal end. A digital logic calculation and display means is secured to the sliding jaw such that it moves along the body with the sliding jaw. A measuring means is in communication with the digital logic calculation and display means, and measures a distance between the fixed and sliding jaws. The distance is then communicated to the digital logic calculation and display means and selectively displayed thereon.

Abstract: An open ended adjustable clamping device useful as a wrench comprised of a supported jaw movably attached to a supporting jaw. Attached to one or both jaws is an additional sliding jaw movable along a separate axis and driven either simultaneously in a synchronized relationship with the movement of the supported jaw or by a separate unsynchronized movement in order to close upon a hexagonal fastener from two axes. Each jaw has two clamping faces configured to match two sides of a hexagon. Each jaw is positioned in relationship to one another in order to form a hexagon. The two axis movement is driven by a single application of force by the user and may transmitted from one jaw to the next by a system of ramps and wedges or other transmission means capable of maintaining the correct ratio of movement so as to maintain the geometric relationship of the jaws. Alternatively the user applied force may be used to cause movement along one axis first, and then redirected to mobilize jaws along a second axis.

  • Patent number: 7275464
Abstract: The wrench comprises a handle that is pivotably connected to a body portion. The body portion supports a fixed jaw. A movable jaw is slidably supported on the body portion such that the movable jaw can move relative to the fixed jaw to vary the spacing between the jaws. When the handle is rotated in a first direction the spacing between the jaws increases to allow the jaws to slip over a work piece and provide a ratchet function. When the handle is rotated in a second direction opposite to the first direction the movable jaw is moved towards the fixed jaw to close on and grip the workpiece. In one embodiment a link moves the movable jaw relative to the fixed jaw and forms part of an dead/over-center locking mechanism.

Abstract: An adjustable wrench including a main body, a slide block, a movable jaw and a handle. The main body is formed with a hollow section in which the slide block is transversely slidably disposed. An adjustment bolt is pivotally disposed on the slide block and engaged with the movable jaw. One side of the slide block adjacent to the handle is formed with a dented section. The handle has at least one stop member corresponding to the dented section for abutting against the slide block. When the handle is wrenched, the stop member abuts against and locate the slide block so as to fix the movable jaw. At this time, the fixed jaw and movable jaw can clamp and wrench a work piece. When the handle is wrenched in reverse direction, the stop member is disengage from the slide block, whereby the slide block and the movable jaw are pushed open by the work piece and idle. Accordingly, the adjustable wrench can one-way wrench the work piece.

  • Patent number: 6568300
Abstract: An adjustable wrench has a ratcheting feature by which its movable jaw retracts away from its fixed jaw when the handle is pulled in one direction, enabling the wrench to slip over the facets of a polygon-shaped nut, but which locks the jaws in position when the wrench handle is turned in the opposite direction. A jaw adjustment screw is positioned for rotation in the wrench head and is axially movable with the lower jaw, but only when a support wedge is slidingly retracted out from its normal position supporting the bottom end of the adjustment screw. The tool can have a ruled edge adjacent to the jaw for indicating jaw opening size. Another feature is a slidable fence device on the fixed jaw, to be moved slidably over a face of the nut when the wrench is in place, providing a stop against sliding of the wrench off the nut.

Abstract: A ratcheting adjustable wrench is disclosed. The wrench has a main body defining a wrench head, handle and fixed jaw. The main body is fabricated of hardened sheet metal formed from laminations. The adjustable wrench has a pin/slot guide mechanism to retain and provide position adjustment for an adjustable jaw. A locking mechanism allows the adjustable jaw to ratchet over the corners of a fastener being tightened. In a locked position, the wrench operates like a standard adjustable wrench. Moving a trigger to an unlocked position allows the worm gear mechanism to shift axially for additional travel. The movable jaw engaged to the worm gear is thereby also allowed to shift position so that the adjustable jaw wrench can rotate over the points of the fastener being torqued.

Abstract: A slide switch adjustable wrench uses a laminated steel construction method that includes a stepped surface to form a guide for the worm gear driven moving jaw. A molded or similarly formed body is sandwiched between the steel housing sides to form a sturdy structure. The body provides cavities, bearings and other features to support and guide moving parts within. A rack and pinion drive system uses simple molded gears to amplify about 2 inches of switch travel into about 6 turns of the worm gear.
