  • Patent number: 6116121
Abstract: An adjustable head wrench with an elongated generally straight offset handle and a stationary jaw fixed to the handle. A movable jaw rides in a bore hole and slot within the stationary jaw with a worm gear. The worm gear in turn fits into a bore hole in the movable jaw and engages internal teeth of the movable jaw with its outer helical gears. At front end of the worm gear threads mount an external adjuster outside of the stationary jaw and wrench head. This rotatable adjuster is used to rotate the worm gear which causes the distance between the object engaging surfaces of the stationary and movable jaws to vary. To retain the adjuster in place and prevent unwanted rotation with respect to the stationary jaw, a biased ball bearing mounted in a cavity of the stationary jaw is used to engage the outer surface of the adjuster.

  • Patent number: 5535650
Abstract: The invention is an adjustable plier wrench hand tool, combining the useful functions of standard adjustable wrenches with standard vise grip pliers. The invention has a main body, a plier handle having a plier handle head, and an upper and lower jaw. The lower jaw is slidably mounted to the main body and capable of moving towards and away from the upper jaw. A thumbscrew is threaded and mated to corresponding teeth on a rack integrally formed with the lower jaw, such that by rotating the thumbscrew, the lower jaw moves towards and away from the upper jaw. The thumbscrew has a bore through which a stub shaft, extends from which a cam, protrudes. By bringing the plier handle into a closed position, an apex of the plier handle head pushes against a cam surface of the cam, forcing the cam, the thumbscrew, and hence the lower jaw upwards, in effect causing a compression between the lower jaw and the upper jaw, so as to firmly grip an object typically a nut.

Biasing springs apply restorative force tending to separate the jaw elements to open the region between the work faces.

  • Patent number: 4794824
Abstract: An improved and simplified vice-locking adjustable end wrench with a primary handle whose jaws are manually adjustable by a customary knurled worm gear for initial adjustment, and a simple, single clamping and gripping pivotal handle relative to the usual handle and secured at one end at the jaws and freely extending to the end of the handle to achieve a vice-like gripping action with maximum desired mechanical advantage and force when the handles are forced together to an adjustable extent in a nested relationship so that the clamping handle can effectively carry the initial wrench closing forces.

  • Patent number: 4766786
Abstract: The present invention provides a wrench having a removable key and key adjustment assembly. The key itself includes a nut receiving face having chamfered upper and lower edge regions to one side of the key and a notch intermediate the other side of the key. The key is removably secured to a threaded stem fitted within a longitudinal opening through the wrench head with a screw securing the stem to the key. The screw releases the stem and the key from another with the stem being then removable through the axial opening and the key itself being removable from the wrench head by engaging the notch with the edge of the cavity and clearing the chamfered edges past the cavity wall suh that the key pulls directly out through the cavity.

  • Patent number: 4548104
Abstract: An adjustable, self-locking crow foot wrench comprises a support member having a pair of movable jaws. A worm adjustment member is rotatably journaled on the support member and engages rack teeth on the jaws to adjust their spacing for different size bolts. A locking element, guided for movement between the worm adjustment member and a drive-stud-receiving recess, is movable into locking engagement with the worm adjustment member in response to insertion of a drive stud into the recess. A spring moves it out of locking engagement in response to removal of the drive stud. In a two-piece embodiment, the support member is a portion of one of the jaws; in a three-piece embodiment, it is a third part.

Abstract: An adjustable jaw end wrench, in which the adjustable jaw is operated by a worm gear, the worm gear is meshed with the rack of the movable jaw and the worm gear is driven by an electric motor. Linear motion propelling the jaw open and/or closed is produced by the electric motor. Batteries in the handle provide the power for the electric movement and a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) switch controls the function of the wrench.

  • Patent number: 4449431
Abstract: An adjustable wrench has a fixed jaw at its head. A movable jaw is adapted on a slide glidably accommodated in the wrench head, the slide being positionable in optional positions by means of an adjusting screw or other device. The slide has a web in the form of a substantially planar plate running in a slot in the wrench head. A slide rod is in engagement with grooves in the side walls of the slot. The web has an elongate opening and the slide rod constitutes a separate rod, which is inserted in the elongate opening such that it has lateral play.

  • Patent number: 4375174
Abstract: A thumb adjustable, parallel jaw end wrench, that uses a worm gear and a movable jaw with a rack, is provided with a locking feature. The worm gear is so mounted in the fixed jaw portion of the wrench that it has play in its axial direction. A first hole ("cam follower hole") that extends perpendicularly away from the head end of the gear is intersected by a second hole ("cam pin hole") running perpendicular to the cam follower hole. Biasing means urge the worm gear toward the cam pin hole. A cylindrical pin having a cam surface with high and low positions that extends radially around a central segment of the pin is rotatably mounted in the cam pin hole. Cam follower means slidably mounted in the cam follower hole ride on the cam surface and extend to the head end of the worm gear. To lock the wrench's grip on an object, the pin is turned to its high cam position, causing the follower means to push the gear, and therefore the rack and movable jaw as well, toward the fixed jaw.

  • Patent number: 4048876
Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement for an adjustable open end wrench of the type comprising a stationary jaw and a movable jaw having a rack gear coupled thereto. A helical gear is coupled between the rack gear and the stationary jaw for driving the movable jaw toward and away from the stationary jaw. The rotational axis of the helical gear is oriented at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rack gear and the direction of motion of the movable jaw. This acute angle is substantially equal to the pitch axis of the helical gear teeth, whereby tangential sections of the helical gear teeth which are in sliding communication with the rack gear teeth are substantially perpendicular to the direction of motion of the movable jaw.

  • Patent number: 4046034
Abstract: Improvements in construction of an open end adjustable wrench of the type which utilizes a handle enclosed helix-actuating assembly and thumb slide actuator for opening and closing the jaws of the wrench, such improvements being directed to the handle cavity, helix actuator and bearing members in support thereof. More particularly, the actuator cavity is of such design and shape that it can be formed as by drop forging while unitarily forming base bearing members therein in properly spaced relationship for receiving the helix actuator in rotatable, longitudinally fixed position to extend a bevel gear into proper operational relationship with a mating bevel gear to drive the jaw adjusting worm gear within the head of the wrench. A cavity cover plate is then unitarily formed with properly positioned retaining bearings such that the cover plate is easily affixed over the cavity with retaining bearings in proper position to coact with the helix actuator.
