Abstract: A method of making a recess in a drive socket and the like includes forming a groove to extend along a face of an elongated drive opening in a metal workpiece from one end of its drive opening, moving material from the surface of the groove to increase its depth from its outer end along only a portion of its length and gathering the material so moved from the groove surface to form a ledge between ends of the groove, whereby a recess is defined by the groove extending beyond the ledge. In addition, a female drive device for socket wrenches and the like is disclosed having an elongated drive opening, a groove longitudinally extending from one end of the drive opening along a face of the drive opening, and a ledge between ends of the groove. The ledge protrudes radially inwardly such that a recess is defined by the groove extending beyond the ledge for retaining a male drive member.

  • Patent number: 6205890
Abstract: A ratchet wrench including a handle, a drive stud, and a ratchet mechanism further includes a tool release mechanism. The tool release mechanism includes a tool release actuator which forms a recess. A reversing lever is coupled to the ratchet mechanism and is movable to forward, non-ratcheting and reverse positions to select a forward ratchet direction, a non-ratcheting action, and a reverse ratchet direction, respectively, for the ratchet mechanism. The direction control element carries a protruding element that is shaped to fit into a recess in the tool release actuator when the direction control element is in the forward position, to remain outside the recess when the direction control element is in the non-ratcheting position, and to fit into the recess when the direction control element is in the reverse position. The protruding element impedes inadvertent operation of the tool release mechanism when the direction control mechanism is in either the forward or the reverse positions.

  • Patent number: 6199457
Abstract: A socket drive tool has an elongated shaft defining a coupling body at one end thereof with a square drive lug having a detent ball disposed in a recess therein and projecting from a face thereof. A link pin reciprocates in the body and has a cam surface at one end thereof engageable with the ball, the pin being spring biased to a condition holding the ball in a retaining position projecting from the recess, and movable against the spring bias to a releasing condition permitting the ball to retract into the recess. An opening in the body is generally oblong in transverse cross section and tapers from a wide outer end to a narrow inner end, and then tapers back out again a short distance from the narrow inner end. The link pin has formed diametrically therethrough a reverse tapered aperture which tapers from a narrow end near the wide end of the opening to an oblong wide end near the inner end of the opening.

  • Patent number: 6182536
Abstract: A hand tool includes a shaft and a rotatable handle that is coupled to the shaft bar by a ratchet mechanism. The disclosed ratchet mechanism provides a clockwise ratcheting action, a counterclockwise ratcheting action, and a freewheeling action, as selected by a ratchet control ring. The shaft bar includes a quick release mechanism using a symmetrical ring that facilitates assembly.

  • Patent number: 6176160
Abstract: Components of a an assembly of operatively related devices for installing a flange cover for a gas valve include a bit especially useful for engaging a corresponding access hole or opening in the face plate portion of a flange cover for transmitting torque thereto for coupling it with a matingly threaded gas valve. The bit end of the bit may have a hole extending axially therethrough and is preferably successively smaller as the end is approached. In one embodiment the bit includes a drive end of a shape differing from the bit end so that a shoulder is formed separating the two ends and providing a stop to prevent the bit from sliding into the hole in which it is engaged. In another embodiment, the drive end is circular with a square recess to accept a drive lug of an appropriate driving tool.

  • Patent number: 6170365
Abstract: The socket wrench extension has an insertion member with a polygonal socket head having a lateral socket head surface. A receiving member with a polygonal socket is provided and a tube rigidly connects the insertion member and the receiving member. The locking member is moveably connected within the insertion member such that the locking element partially projects from the lateral socket head surface. The pressure transmission member is axially moveable in the tube. The pressure transmission member has a first and a second end. The first end serves as an actuation member for the pressure transmission member. The second end transforms the axial movement of the pressure transmission member, directed toward the insertion member, into an outward movement of the locking member. The receiving member has an axial bore and a guide sleeve which is inserted into the axial bore of the receiving member for guiding the first end of the pressure transmission member.
