    Abstract: A strap wrench includes a strap that is a continuous loop and has notches. No portion of the strap is affixed to any portion of the wrench. The strap is placed around an object that needs to be turned such as an oil filter on an engine. A tension mechanism is then used to tighten the strap into place around the object to be turned. A ratchet mechanism engages one or more notches on the strap to prevent movement of the strap in one direction while allowing movement of the strap in the opposite direction. The combination of the notched continuous loop strap and ratchet mechanism allow the strap wrench to have a ratcheting action after the strap is tightened into place around the object to be turned.

A second pivot connection pivotably connects the first and second sections and has a pivot bolt extending parallel to the pivot axis of the first pivot connection. A sprocket wheel and a ratchet wheel are rotatably connected to the pivot bolt and fixedly connected to one another. A chain connected to the second grip is guided across the sprocket wheel to the second section and extends in the longitudinal direction toward a tension spring at which it is fastened. A spring-biased follower pawl is connected to the second section such that upon closing the second section sprocket wheel and ratchet wheel rotate to close the pliers.

A pair of slots translate the rotating motion of the pivot arm member about the pivot point into linear components. The jaw member at the end of the handle member and the pivot arm member are biased apart from one another by a spring, but the bias may be overcome by squeezing the handle and pivot arm member or by advancing the screw member. When the screw member is fully retracted, the spring separates the jaw members. When the screw member is advanced, it prevents separation of the jaw members.

    Abstract: A thumb adjustable, parallel jaw end wrench, that uses a worm gear and a movable jaw with a rack, is provided with a locking feature. The worm gear is so mounted in the fixed jaw portion of the wrench that it has play in its axial direction. A first hole ("cam follower hole") that extends perpendicularly away from the head end of the gear is intersected by a second hole ("cam pin hole") running perpendicular to the cam follower hole. Biasing means urge the worm gear toward the cam pin hole. A cylindrical pin having a cam surface with high and low positions that extends radially around a central segment of the pin is rotatably mounted in the cam pin hole. Cam follower means slidably mounted in the cam follower hole ride on the cam surface and extend to the head end of the worm gear. To lock the wrench's grip on an object, the pin is turned to its high cam position, causing the follower means to push the gear, and therefore the rack and movable jaw as well, toward the fixed jaw.
