With Positive Lock For Member Patents (Class 81/409)
  • Patent number: 10744622
Abstract: Pliers having two pliers legs that cross at a pivot bolt, of which pliers leg is fixed and the other is movable with respect thereto, wherein the pivot bolt is optionally fixable in a longitudinal slot in the fixed pliers leg by toothing engagement in order to set a mouth opening width, by means of engagement teeth formed on the longitudinal slot and one or more mating teeth formed on the pivot bolt. The toothing engagement is releasable by the pivot bolt being pressed down in a first direction of movement and subsequently the pliers legs being moved together, or by the pivot bolt automatically passing over one or more engagement teeth, wherein the pivot bolt moves in a second direction of movement on passing over an engagement tooth.

Abstract: Pliers with adjustable jaw span have a first member (1) and a second member (2) which cooperate with each other. A long slot (13) is formed in the first member (1). The second member (2) is connected with the first member (1) by means of a pivot (3) passing through the long slot (13), and rotatable around the pivot (3) relative to the first member (1), while adjusting the span of the jaws by varying the position of the pivot (3) within the long slot (13). The edge of the long slot (13) is provided with ratchet teeth (14). The pivot (3) is engaged with the ratchet teeth (14) by a pawl (31), thus the pivot is movable within the long slot (13) in a first direction and immovable in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction. The pliers are convenient to operate because when the position of the pivot (3) is moved within the long slot (13), the user's operation is required only for the movement in one direction.

Abstract: A hand operated gripping tool includes a movable jaw, a fixed jaw, a first cam associated with the movable jaw, a pivotal handle connected with the movable jaw and a second cam associated with the pivotal handle. The first cam is spaced from the fixed jaw by a first variable distance, and the second cam is spaced from the fixed jaw by a second variable distance, with the first distance maintained greater than the second distance. The jaws are cooperable to define a variable size space for receiving a workpiece and the cams are operable to cause the jaws to grip the workpiece positioned in the variable size space. The cams are arranged such that rotational movement of the second cam caused by operation of the pivotal handle causes the movable jaw to pivot on the first cam to grip the workpiece that is positioned in the variable size space.

  • Patent number: 6327943
Abstract: The present invention comprises a number of innovations in the design of self-adjusting pliers. A self-adjusting pliers tool formed of laminated sheet metal construction is provided with separately fabricated cast steel jaws that provide improved strength and durability relative to laminated jaws. Techniques are also disclosed for casting the steel jaws and for treating them to achieve improved surface hardness and corrosion resistance. In certain embodiments, the jaw and the jaw end of the laminated handle are designed to interlock to prevent the jaw from sliding out of position. In certain other embodiments, a “self-energizing” feature is provided in which the shape and tooth configuration of the jaw, and the angle of the jaw end of the pliers, cooperate to keep the tool secured to a workpiece even after the upward squeezing force on the lower handle is released.

  • Patent number: 6311588
Abstract: Self-adjusting pliers including first and second members each handle portions and jaw portions. The first member defines a rack having a plurality of teeth. A rack engagement structure is mounted to an intermediate portion of the second member and positioned adjacent the rack. During initial manual movement of the handle portions towards one another, the rack engagement structure travels in disengaged, spaced relation with respect to the rack. Then, after the jaw portions engage opposing sides of a workpiece, continued movement of the handle portions towards one another causes movement of the rack engagement structure toward the rack until the rack engagement structure engages the rack. The rack engagement structure has a movement restrictive portion being cooperable with the rack so as to limit the movement of the rack engagement structure toward the rack when the jaw portions contact one another in the absence of a workpiece therebetween.
