  • Patent number: 9877766
Abstract: A driver device (hexalobe or otherwise) that includes a handle portion, an elongate shaft portion, and an end portion that includes a screw engagement portion and a split manufactured offset from the central axis of the end portion and/or the screw engagement portion, forming two asymmetric halves of the end portion and/or screw engagement portion. This screw engagement portion is slightly oversized relative to the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw. Thus, when the screw engagement portion is pressed into the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw, the split manufactured offset from the central axis of the end portion and/or the screw engagement portion allows the screw engagement portion to compress slightly, creating a friction fit between the screw engagement portion and the corresponding tool engagement recess of the locking cap, set screw, or bone screw.

  • Patent number: 5279187
Abstract: An extractor for removing a broken bolt stud having a pre-drilled bore from a threaded bore including a cylindrical body having a drive head on one end and expander on the opposite end. A collet is movably attached to the cylindrical body by threads permitting lateral movement of the expander against the gripping means causing them to expand and engage the pre-drilled bore. Rotation of the expander permits removal of the broken bolt stud due to the friction between the extractor and the stud.

Abstract: A vicing tool for internally gripping hollow bodies, in particular, those of a tubular nature, which comprises a body (1) created in two halves (1a, 1b) having two mating faces (2a, 2b) and angularly displaceable with respect to one another about a rotational axis (X) coincident with a common edge (4) of said faces as well as means (8) for imparting to said two halves of said body said angular displacement. From at least one side of said body a nose (12) extends formed by two elongated members (12a, 12b) having substantially semicylindrical lateral surfaces, extending from said two halves of said body and connected coplanarly to said faces. The nose (12) is composed of longitudinal concentric portions (13a, 13b, 13c 13d), of increasing diameter starting from its free end, and the rotational axis (X) is parallel and eccentric with respect to the longitudinal axis of said nose.

  • Patent number: 5207131
Abstract: An oil filter removal tool for removing an oil filter contained within the oil pan of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The tool has a pair of outwardly engaging jaws, a rotatable central socket drive element, means for connecting the outwardly engaging jaws to cooperatively engage the central socket drive element, and means for outwardly biasing the jaws. The outwardly engaging jaws each have a substantially semicircular outer wall which has means for engaging an oil pan filter cap. The outwardly engaging jaws each further have an inner wall which has a central polygonal surface and retaining means for retaining the central socket drive element within the jaws. The central socket drive element has an upper portion and a lower polygonal base which has a plurality of drive walls.

  • Patent number: 5165311
Abstract: A pneumatic nut installation tool has a plunger assembly which advances from a retracted position near the rear of the tool through a nut pickup station to an extended position extending from the front of the tool. A nut shuttle delivers a nut in front of the plunger assembly before it reaches the nut pickup station and retracts away from the nut pickup station before the plunger assembly moves through that station. The nut is picked up on an assembly that includes a split spring ring which engages the bore of the nut. The spring ring is mounted on a fixed member, which also includes a hexagonal key for preventing rotation of a bolt as the nut is threaded onto it. A rotating nut driver moves over the outside of the nut picked up by the nut pickup assembly for threading the nut onto a bolt.

  • Patent number: 5025688
Abstract: A fastener drive tool for applying a rotational torque to a threaded fastener for driving the fastener into or out of a workpiece. The drive tool has an elongated shaft portion with a free end which is selectively controllably engageable with a recess formed in the fastener. The free end is formed with a fastener engaging expansion portion. The expansion portion is operated by a draw shaft being selectively lockable in a bit retaining position. The expansion portion of the bit portion creates substantial fastener retaining forces on the opposing internal surfaces of the fastener recess in which it is inserted.

Abstract: A gripping screw drive bit for use with conventional drive sockets which utilize non-magnetic means for gripping and retaining Robertson, TORX, and hexagonal screws and bolts. The gripping bit comprises two mating members. The gripping action is provided by the misalignment of the two members of a composite gripping bit, within a screw head recess, when a minimal amount of torque is exerted upon the composite gripping bit by a drive socket.

  • Patent number: 4890521
Abstract: A power driven screw driver self-gripping composite bit in the form of a pair of mirror image halved elements united at a common oblique interface providing a square end driver for reception in a screw head formed with a combined socket that accepts both a square end bit and a cross-point bit. Each halved element driver portion defines a trapezoidal cross section having major and minor parallel exterior side surfaces, a complete side surface extending at right angles to its major and minor surfaces, and a diagonal-like interface. The composite bit holder resiliently biases the halved elements interfaces into coextensive flush contact normally defining a square end driver.

  • Patent number: 4838131
Abstract: In one embodiment, there is provided an axial nut starter having a nut engaging member which can be used with a wide range of nut sizes. The nut engaging member is in the form of a stepped series of stacked, coaxially aligned cylinders. The base, or the largest cylinder, of the nut engaging member is attached to an elongated handle. The top, or the smallest cylinder, of the cone is inserted into the nut until the wall of one of the cylinders frictionally engages the threads of the nut and the face of the nut shoulders against the top of the next larger cylinder. Unitary rotational movement of the handle and the nut engaging member starts the nut on the fastener. In another embodiment, an offset nut starter is provided which permits the starting of a nut on a fastener when it is impossible to reach the fastener along its axis.

  • Patent number: 4442737
Abstract: Removal of a screw-on type of thread protector from a pipe is achieved by this invention with uniformly applied pressure about the entire circumferential surface of the thread protector. Thus an inflatable type grasping urethane boot of a wrench mechanism is positioned circumferentially about and adjacent to the grasping surface of a generally cylindrical screwed-on thread protector before inflation. The boot is connected with a chamber which retains a fluid such as air under pressure and thus is firmly coupled in grasping connection with the thread protector by inflating in place from an air pressure hose for example. After removal of the thread protector, the chamber may be deflated to release it. The wrench is manipulated to rotate the inflated boot by rotation of a shaft co-axially located with the pipe to which the inflation valve may be attached for ready access. Preferably, the boot is supplied with a tread design to give better grasping characteristics.
