Abstract: A polyaxial screwdriver for inserting a bone screw in a vertebra. A polyaxial bone screw assembly includes a coupling element. When a screw engaging end of the polyaxial screwdriver is lowered on the head of the bone screw, the complimentary surfaces of the screw engaging end of the screwdriver and the head of the screw self-align. A ratchet mechanism formed in the screwdriver provides progressive and automatic locking of the polyaxial screwdriver to the coupling element and prevents the accidental unthreading from the coupling element. In another embodiment of the polyaxial screwdriver, a collet slides over the outside surface of the upper end of the coupling element and locks on to the coupling element. In yet another embodiment of a polyaxial screwdriver, the outer sleeve of the polyaxial screwdriver has a split end that securely engages the coupling element.

  • Patent number: 7441483
Abstract: A fastener includes a round, blind hole or pocket in its head. Installation and removal of the fastener is accomplished with a tool containing an eccentric segment on the end of a shaft. When rotated within the pocket, the eccentric segment displaces laterally relative to the shaft to provide a friction grip to the lateral wall of the pocket. The strength of the grip is proportional to the applied torque. Eccentric displacement allows rotation but prevents the tool from spinning out of the fastener thereby eliminating cam-out and surface damage resulting from contact with a spinning tool tip. The eccentric head of the tool can be made disposable and to shear off when a predetermined torque is reached. The smooth-sided round hole offers no purchase for commonly available tools; making the fastener tamper-resistance. In another embodiment, the fastener includes a raised portion in the pocket. The tool is capable of engaging an inner surface of a drain flange in a manner that is sufficient to transfer enough force to remove screw-on drain flanges and is capable of use with various designs and sizes of screw-on drain flanges. Different size cams and different lever arms used on the cams allow the tool to optimize the radial force to torque ratio for both removal and insertion of screw-on drain flanges. In addition, nubs are used at the bottom of the drain flange to engage arms that typically are used on drain flanges to further add to the resistance that can be provided between the tool and the drain flange and distribute forces in a dynamic, instantaneous and automatic fashion to optimize removal of the drain flange.

When torque is applied to the coupler, one or more gripping surfaces are forced apart by a cam mechanism.
