  • Patent number: 5615575
Abstract: A method to accurately determine and assure proper clamping force or bolt tension in fastening systems comprises statistically sampling washer or flanged bolt lots for clamping force versus deflection relationships, encoding the lots and subsequently installing the fasteners to the prescribed deflections of the lots. A validator and validation method is disclosed that provides the statistical sampling and a corresponding sensor device is disclosed for measuring the deflection as the fastener is installed. Thus, the deflection of the washer or bolt flange as the fastener is installed determines the clamping force applied by the fastener and assures that the proper clamping force has been obtained. The new method and sensor are applicable to special flanged bolt and standard bolt--Belleville washer combinations. No modification of the bolts or washers is required.

  • Patent number: 5572905
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a torque driver including a laterally displaceable gear support member to carry an output spur gear. A biasing assembly biases the output spur gear into engagement with a pinion to which is applied an input torque greater than a desired output torque limit for a threaded fastener such as a nut or screw. A coiled output linkage connects the output spur gear with a fastener adaptor which may be a socket for a nut. A gear tooth profile provides a separation force that overcomes the bias to limit torque at the desired torque limit. Multiple fasteners may be rotated simultaneously to a desired torque limit if additional output spur gears are provided. A gauged selector mechanism is provided to laterally displace multiple driver members for fasteners arranged in differing configurations. The torque limit is selectably adjustable and may be different for fasteners within the same fastener configuration.

  • Patent number: 5467674
Abstract: An improved combined torque limiting and part marking wrench according to the present invention includes: a torque-applying handle; a housing pivotally mounted to the handle, the housing adapted to receive a releasably mounted, replaceable, part-engaging head assembly at a second end thereof; and a part-marking mechanism mounted within the housing. The part-marking mechanism includes a marking tip which passes through a bore in the head assembly for marking a part. A mechanical linkage arm is pivotally connected to the torque-applying handle. A pivotable cam is pivotally connected to the linkage arm and in operative engagement with the part-marking mechanism for moving the marking tip through the bore, such that, when torque on a part has reached a predetermined value, the torque applying handle moves the linkage arm, which pivots the pivotable cam, thus forcing the pivotable cam against the part marking mechanism, which causes the marking tip to extend outwardly from the housing to mark the part.

Abstract: A driver with automatic speed and torque switching including two different drive trains which operate in parallel and are driven at the same time by a motor. One drive train provides a high-speed output while the other provides a low-speed output. A single drive head for transmitting torque to the nut is normally coupled to the high-speed output, and not to the low-speed output. The machine operates initially at the high speed for the "free rotation" of the nut. When the nut contacts the surface of the structural body, the drive coupling to the high-speed output is disabled, and the low-speed output (which formerly was not coupled to the drive head) is not at the same time coupled to the drive head. The nut is then driven much more slowly but with a higher driving torque. Within the low-speed drive train there is included a friction clutch, and adjustement means for adjusting the level of torque at which it will slip.

Abstract: Hydraulic tongs, used to screw oilfield tubulars together, are equipped with torque control means which enable the tongs to rotate the tubulars and then gradually apply torque until a preselected torque value is reached, hold the torque at this value a desired period of time and then release the torque. In one form of the invention, a tong control restricts the power of the tong motor to enable low torque rotation while limiting the maximum torque which can be produced by the tong motor. A hydraulic cylinder placed in the tongs' restraining line is controlled to shorten, hold or extend the line. When the line is shortened, the tongs are pulled in a direction which increases the torque to a value above the maximum torque produced by the tong motor. The system allows heavy, powerful tongs to be used to accurately apply and hold a wide variety of selected torque values.

  • Patent number: 4883130
Abstract: The fastener driving tool of an automatic assembly machine is rotated by a two speed transmission which acts in conjunction with two torque-responsive clutches. Initially, the transmission rotates the driving tool at a high speed to effect fast driving of the fastener. After torque of predetermined magnitude has been applied to the fastener, one of the clutches torques out and, at that time, the transmission rotates the driving tool at a greatly reduced speed by way of the other clutch so that the fastener is rotated slowly during final tightening. When final tightening torque of predetermined magnitude is applied to the fastener, the second clutch torques out to stop rotation of the driving tool.

  • Patent number: 4869139
Within the low-speed drive train there is included a friction clutch, and adjustment means for adjusting the level of torque at which it will slip.
