Gear-operated Patents (Class 81/57)
  • Patent number: 10888980
Abstract: A power screwdriver has a gear housing with forwardly extending output shaft and a peripheral external spline with teeth lying on a first diameter. The gear housing has a peripheral groove with groove bottom arranged rearward of the external spline. The groove bottom lies on a second diameter smaller than the first diameter. The support bracket has a fastening portion with an annular fastening flange with internal spline and a support foot arranged laterally offset from the output shaft and placed against an external counter bearing for diverting reaction torques. Internal and external splines cooperate to rotationally fix the support bracket relative to the gear housing. A locking element on the fastening flange can assume a blocking setting or a release setting. In the blocking setting, the locking element extends partially or completely into the groove and locks the support bracket to the gear housing in longitudinal direction.

Abstract: A filter turning mechanism is attached to an engine in proximity to a filter (such as an oil filter), and may be used to install or remove a filter by turning the filter. The filter turning mechanism contacts a filter, and rotates the filter when the filter turning mechanism is rotated with a tool. One implementation of the filter turning mechanism includes an inner drive gear and a filter drive mechanism. The inner drive gear normally spins freely within the filter drive mechanism, but when pushed into the filter drive mechanism with a suitable tool such as a ratchet extension, the inner drive gear engages the filter drive mechanism, thereby causing rotation of the inner drive gear to rotate the filter drive mechanism as well, which in turn rotates the filter.

Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method for installing fasteners are disclosed involving a fastener installation tool and a socket assembly. The fastener installation tool comprises a tool component and a gear head. The gear head comprises a lever, a retaining slide, a retaining slide housing, and at least one gear. The socket assembly comprises a socket, a hex key, and a hex key retainer. An end of the drive shaft of the socket has an annular groove around the circumference of the exterior surface of the drive shaft. When the retaining slide is slid into a locked position, the retaining slide engages the annular groove of the drive shaft of the socket, thereby attaching the drive shaft of the socket to the gear head of the fastener installation tool. A socket gear of the gear head matingly engages the drive shaft of the socket to rotate the socket.

Abstract: A gear mechanism is presented. The gear mechanism includes a structure having a spiral-pattern groove with an axis extending through a center of the spiral-pattern groove and an arm with teeth extending across the spiral-pattern groove. The teeth are shaped and arranged to fit in the spiral-pattern groove such that when the structure is rotated about the axis, the teeth slide in the spiral-pattern groove to move the arm toward or away from the center of the spiral-pattern groove depending on the direction of rotation. This gear mechanism may be incorporated into a wrench, such as a wrench for removing and installing automotive oil filters.

Abstract: A wrench for tightening threaded male and female pipe nuts includes a wrench gear rotatable within a housing and having a nut slot so that the wrench gear can be engaged upon one of the nuts. A pair of pinion drive gears engage with gear teeth of the wrench gear at spaced apart locations on the periphery so that at least one of the pinion drive gears is engaged with the wrench gear at all times during rotation of the wrench gear to tighten the one nut. A nut holding plate has a nut slot and is mounted on the housing by a pin and slot arrangement so that the nut holding plate can shift to enable the nut holding plate to be engaged upon the other nut and hold the other nut stationary while the wrench gear is rotated to tighten the one nut.

Abstract: The powered adjustable pipe wrench has a motorized rotary grip to rotate a pipe component clamped therein and a laterally spaced stationary grip to hold a second pipe component stationary relative to the first as it is being rotated. The pipe wrench may have a cylindrical jaw housing with semicylindrical fixed and openable portions hinged to one another. One end of the housing includes a powered component to rotate the pipe component held therein, while the other housing end includes fixed jaw components holding the second pipe component stationary. Alternatively, the pipe wrench may have a powered component extending from the fixed jaw of the wrench body to rotate the first pipe component, and a rectilinearly adjustable jaw portion extending from the wrench body. A set of fixed jaw components is axially spaced from the rotary component to hold the second pipe component stationary.

Abstract: A tool is provided having a body comprising a first receptacle for applying torque mounted to the body and a second receptacle for receiving torque mounted to the body and spaced from the first receptacle. Two or more gears rotably couple the first receptacle to the second receptacle so that an application of torque to the second receptacle results in a transfer and amplification of that torque at the first receptacle. The two or more gears may be rotably coupled so that a rotation in a first direction of a driving gear rotates an odd number of intermediate gears which in turn rotate a driven gear in the first direction. The two or more gears may be connected by intermeshed gear teeth or a chain. Pin members may secure the body from rotation while torque is applied to the second receptacle.
