    Abstract: A tool drive includes upper and lower coaxial manually rotatable drive members and a driven tool member at the bottom of the lower drive member. A reversible unidirectional transmissions rotatably couple both the upper and lower drive members to the driven member. The transmission coupling the lower drive member includes a peripheral ratchet formed in the lower inside face of the lower drive member. A double ended pawl rockably carried by the upper drive member with its opposite ends alternatively drive engaging the ratchet so as to provide a ratchet coupling driving in alternative opposite directions. A follower carried by the driven member engages a cam on the pawl to transfer the pawl between opposite drive positions in accordance with the angular directional relationship between the upper drive and driven members.

    Abstract: A reversible ratchet wrench wherein the usual pawl member associated with the usual ratchet wheel located in the head end of an elongate, ratchet wrench body is rotated either clockwise or counterclockwise from one end position to an opposite end position for reverse wrench operation by an elongate, change-over finger that extends longitudinally of the wrench body to the handle end thereof and is pivotally mounted as a lever relative to the wrench body. The work arm end of the lever preferably freely engages a recess or notch in the pawl, while the power arm end of the lever preferably engages a resiliently urged ball detent for snap action in moving from one end position to the opposite end position, alternately, under the control of preferably opposite push button ends of a slide actuator located near the handle end of the wrench body for pressing by a finger of the one hand of a user holding the wrench by such handle end.

    Abstract: A reversible ratchet wrench comprising an elongated housing whose head portion encloses a ratchet wheel and a pawl. The orientation of the pawl determines one of two driving directions of the ratchet wheel, to which is connected a square driving member. An elongated groove containing a control device and an arcuate spring strip is provided on the upper surface of the housing. The front end of the arcuate spring strip contacts with one lateral side of the pawl, and the rear end of the spring strip is retained by the control device. The control device comprises a control switch which is controlled by the thumb or other fingers of the hand grasping the wrench, with a fixing spring assembly enabling the control switch to be fixed in place. An upper cover plate and a lower cover plate enclose the elongated housing of the ratchet wrench.

    Abstract: A power driven wrench includes a rotatable drive rotor journalled between fixed arms of a yoke affixed to one end of a wrench handle containing a motor. Disposed between the yoke arms is a ratchet head which is driven in reciprocal angular motion by the motor. The ratchet head is engaged with the drive rotor by means of a pawl in the ratchet head and a ratchet gear on the drive rotor. A direction switching lever within the ratchet head permits the direction of rotation of the drive rotor to be manually selected. The switching lever extends from the sides of the ratchet head, such that the direction of rotation of the wrench can be easily changed even if the wrench is inadvertently backed up against an immovable object while removing a nut or bolt. The location of the switching lever enables it be actuated with the same hand holding the wrench, and also results in the wrench having a thin profile which is useful in confined spaces.

    Abstract: A spinner ratchet wrench (10) having a normal ratcheting capability and a free-spinning mode used to easily and quickly pre-tighten a nut or bolt (device) prior to final tightening or to remove a device after it is initially loosened. This feature does not require the handle (18) to be oscillated and is particularly useful when devices are located in areas where finger manipulation is difficult or impossible. Free-spinning is achieved by a combination of a three-position pawl (22a) that includes a neutral position as well as the two standard ratchet positions, and a spinner drive shaft (18a) having at opposite ends a primary bevel gear (18b) and a spin knob (18p). When the pawl (22a) is placed in neutral it is disengaged from the ratchet gear (16f) allowing the shaft (18a) to be directly rotated by the knob (18p). As the shaft turns the primary bevel gear (18b) turns a secondary bevel gear (16d) connected to the socket shank (16k).

    Abstract: A ratchet wrench usable in areas of limited access normally requiring an open-end wrench, but possessing the high torque characteristics of a closed-end socket wrench is disclosed. A handle member terminates in an expandable yoke containing a fixed upper half and an expandable lower half for movement from an expanded open position for receiving a socket to a closed position in driving engagement with the socket. A curved rib is formed transversely on the inner surface of each yoke half. A split ring-like nut driving socket contains exterior ratchet teeth and a circular bore formed transversely through the socket with a recessed counter bore forming a circular guide channel in the socket concentric with the transverse bore. The socket guide channel is received in rotational engagement with the curved ribs of the yoke halves. The socket contains a curved head having lands which in combination define a polygonal wrench opening.

    Abstract: A dual-mode ratchet wrench usable in either a reciprocating or a nonreciprocating mode is disclosed. The ratchet wrench includes a wrench body having a head portion and a handle portion, a rotatable drive unit, a ratchet mechanism, and a sleeve assembly that is axially translatable along the handle portion. In the reicprocating mode, the sleeve assembly is moved to a disengaged position wherein the wrench is operated by swinging the handle back and forth through an arcuate path. Due to the action of the ratchet mechanism, the drive unit is forced to rotate when the handle portion is swung in one direction, but not the other. In the nonreciprocating mode, the sleeve assembly is moved to an engaged position, wherein the inner end of the sleeve assembly engages the drive unit through a bevel gear system. The wrench is operated by rotating the sleeve assembly about an axial centerline through the handle of the wrench.

    Abstract: A socket wrench tool set. A hollow drive ring is retained in an annular head of a socket wrench and is rotatable therein in both directions. The wheel has a ratcheted outer peripheral portion and an interior female drive ring portion with a prismatic driving inner periphery at one end and a circular cylindrical inner periphery at the other end joined by a flat shelf. The cylindrical inner periphery has a diameter greater than that of the largest bolt with which the wrench is to be used. A ratchet pawl is mounted on the handle for engagement with the ratcheted outer peripheral portion. A series of removable sockets is provided; each has at one end a prismatic outer periphery sized for fitting in the drive ring; an inner prismatic periphery at the other end drives a nut or bolt head, and a large circular cylindrical opening, nearly as large as the distance between the opposing walls of that inner prism, extends therethrough to enable passage of a bolt all the way therethrough.

    Abstract: A torque wrench having an elongated hinge terminating in a ratchet ring with interiorally directed teeth has a work head for turning a workpiece and a pawl for selectively rotating the workpiece with rotational movement of the hinge. The pawl is provided with a lip directed radially outward from the axis of rotation of the work head. A corresponding annular groove is defined in the interior wall of the ratchet ring to receive the lip. Tilting or misalignment of the pawl within the cavity defined within the ratchet ring is thereby prevented. In its preferred embodiment, the pawl is equipped with a plurality of ratchet teeth with the lip extending outwardly from the generally convex surface into which the teeth are formed midway between the longitudinal extremities of the pawl perpendicular to the plane of the ratchet ring. The corresponding annular groove in the ratchet ring likewise divides the ratchet teeth into separate portions on either side of the pawl lip.

The slots open into the notch to allow axial movement and a spring urges the barrel toward the first position but is manually overcome to move the barrel to the second position for reversing.

A pair of jaws are threadedly mounted on the lead screw of movement toward or away from each other dependent upon direction of rotation of the lead screw. A two piece body is provided which defines an elongated handle and two parallel, spaced apart members which terminate in a generally circular, enlarged ratchet holding head having circular openings in which the hub portions of the ratchet disk are received. A pall is provided for controlling the direction of ratchet movement.
