Abstract: A strap wrench includes a strap that is a continuous loop and has notches. No portion of the strap is affixed to any portion of the wrench. The strap is placed around an object that needs to be turned such as an oil filter on an engine. A tension mechanism is then used to tighten the strap into place around the object to be turned. A ratchet mechanism engages one or more notches on the strap to prevent movement of the strap in one direction while allowing movement of the strap in the opposite direction. The combination of the notched continuous loop strap and ratchet mechanism allow the strap wrench to have a ratcheting action after the strap is tightened into place around the object to be turned.

  • Patent number: 7155999
Abstract: A strap wrench which includes a plurality of gripping pads located on the strap that facilitates tight engagement of the cylindrical object that is used to be located thereabout for the purpose of gripping and turning of the cylindrical object. The strap wrench also includes a brake that provides for securely locking of the position of the strap when it is in its tightly mounted position preventing any loosening movement of the strap. The brake includes a ratcheting mechanism that permits movement of the handle in only one position when the brake is in the locked position. The strap may include a joint assembly which will permit the strap to be separated to be located in conjunction with a cylindrical object and then rejoined.

  • Patent number: 6367355
Abstract: A universal wrench is described for tightening or loosening polygonal assembly elements, such as nuts, bolt heads or polygonal tube sleeves. This universal wrench includes a wrench body provided with a handle (1) and a wrench head (2) intended to come into contact with a polygonal assembly element (5) to be tightened or loosened, said wrench head including a support body (20) able to accommodate said polygonal assembly element. The wrench further includes a flexible strap-shaped element (3) intended to surround and hold the polygonal assembly element against the support body and tension means for the strap. The wrench head is also rotatably mounted with respect to the handle so as to allow an increase in the tension of the strap when a rotational movement is applied to the assembly element and to allow the strap to relax during an opposite movement.

  • Patent number: 5868046
Abstract: The present invention provides for an adjustable wrench device which will enable a user to obtain greater torque for easy removal of items, such as oil filter, jar lids, and removing and tightening screws when used with a screw driver. The adjustable wrench device comprises having a front end and a back end. A threaded rod extends outwardly from the front end and a first clamp is removably secured to the threaded rod. A second clamp is secured to the hand and is located in proximity to the front end. This second clamp cannot be remove from the handle, but it can freely rotate about the handle. A first end of a strap is secured to the first clamp while a second end of the strap is secured to a pivotal level. The pivotal level is secured to the second clamp. Thereby, this design will enable the user to threadably secure the first clamp to the threaded rod for a desired diameter. Once the desired diameter is obtained, the strap is placed around the item and the handle is rotated.

  • Patent number: 5845550
Abstract: A tool for securing or removing a cylindrical object by grasping the object and rotating it about its central axis comprises a band clamp assembly and a hinged drive assembly. The band clamp assembly comprises a band clamp which is tightened by means of a thumbscrew or hex nut. The hinged drive assembly comprises at least four segments connected by at least three hinges. The end-segments of the hinged drive assembly have on their obverse surfaces raised slots through which the band clamp is slipped. The band clamp assembly then fits over and around a cylindrical object such as an oil filter canister. The clamp is tightened around the canister body such that the inner surface of the clamp and the reverse surfaces of the end-segments, which are knurled or scored, are in frictional contact with the canister wall. In the preferred embodiment--a hinged drive assembly having five segments connected by four hinges, rotation of the canister about its central axis is accomplished by one of three means.

  • Patent number: 5323671
Abstract: A tool for use with a ratchet wrench for removing and/or installing various types and sizes of fuel and oil filters, unscrewing and/or screwing different sizes of threaded pipe, turning and/or twisting fence posts, and moving and/or rolling logs. The tool has a belt or strap, with a buckle at one end and a magnet at the other end. The buckle grips the ratchet of a ratchet wrench and the belt is wrapped around the filter, pipe, post, or log. When the handle of the ratchet wrench is moved, the buckle is pressed against the filter, pipe, post, or log, causing it to turn as the ratchet is turned. The magnet makes for more secure contact between the belt and a filter or pipe, which are made of metal.

  • Patent number: 5115700
Abstract: A strap wrench made up of a semi-rigid, form retaining, planar strip wrap around. This wrap around is formed into a shape retaining loop, the opening of the loop being readily adjustable. Because of the semi-rigid, form retaining characteristics of the wrap around strip, the loop will retain its shape and size as it is moved about and positioned over an object to be rotated. A simple squeeze of the strip will conform the size of the loop to the outer diameter of the object to be rotated. A flexible pull cord is attached to the fore end of the semi-rigid, form retaining strip and wrapped about the strip prior to or as the strip is placed about the object to be rotated. A simple straight line pull on the flexible cord exerts a force which acts along a line which is tangent to the object to be rotated and which acts at a distance removed from the axis of that object.

  • Patent number: 5003848
Abstract: A mechanical tool for facilitating coupling and decoupling of home fittings and caps to a plumbing outlet, such as septic drain outlet on a recreational vehicle is disclosed. The tool includes a handle and two opposed branches extending from one end thereof. The free end of each branch has a slot therein sized to engageably receive one of the two diametrically opposed outwardly projecting lugs existing on a conventional drain hose fitting or drain cap. The branches are roughly spaced such that when in use the slotted free ends of the branches are capable of being adjusted to engagably receive the lugs. An adjustable biasing member susposed between the branches and a position so its not to interfere with the operation of the tool when used to manipulate the fitting or cap. The biasing member allows the tool to be appropriately tensioned such that the branches securely engage the fitting or cap when in use.

  • Patent number: 4552040
Abstract: An improved wrench includes a rigid band extending between a pair of spaced-apart end plates which are supported directly upon a common threaded shaft. In a preferred form of the invention, the band has a plurality of sequential and incremental flat surfaces extending along one edge between the end plates, and a file-like inner gripping surface strengthened by a V-shaped ridge forming the remainder of the band. As the shaft is rotated by hand about its longitudinal axis, one end plate remains generally stationary with respect to the shaft while the other end plate moves along the shaft either toward or away from the stationary end plate, depending on the direction of shaft rotation. When placed about a portion of an article such as an oil filter or the like, movement of the end plates toward one another causes the inner surfaces of the band to substantially uniformly grip the article about its circumference.

  • Patent number: 4160394
Abstract: A wrench adapted to turn a rotatable workpiece or tool about its central axis. The wrench comprises an elongated handle received through a bracket having an inwardly facing surface that engages the workpiece or tool. A pivotal connection between the inner end of the handle and the bracket permits adjustment of the handle about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal handle axis. A flexible loop is provided as a work-engaging member. It has one end connected to the inner end of the handle at one side of the pivot axis and its remaining end connected to the inner end of the handle at the opposite side of the pivot axis. Adjustment means is provided by manipulation of a sleeve surrounding a rigid inner handle section or shaft, the sleeve being both rotatable and axially movable with respect to the inner shaft. Radial cam surfaces are formed on the inner end of the sleeve and the outer end of the bracket to vary the angular position of the handle with respect to the bracket about the transverse pivot axis.
