  • Patent number: 7275468
Abstract: A high bandwidth rotary fast tool servo provides tool motion in a direction nominally parallel to the surface-normal of a workpiece at the point of contact between the cutting tool and workpiece. Three or more flexure blades having all ends fixed are used to form an axis of rotation for a swing arm that carries a cutting tool at a set radius from the axis of rotation. An actuator rotates a swing arm assembly such that a cutting tool is moved in and away from the lathe-mounted, rotating workpiece in a rapid and controlled manner in order to machine the workpiece. A pair of position sensors provides rotation and position information for a swing arm to a control system. A control system commands and coordinates motion of the fast tool servo with the motion of a spindle, rotating table, cross-feed slide, and in-feed slide of a precision lathe.

  • Patent number: 7249545
Abstract: A numerically controlled machine tool can simultaneously perform a variety of machining operations using work on a first main shaft and work on a second main shaft. A first tool post is movable together with a second main shaft in the direction of a main shaft axis and in a direction orthogonal thereto in a plane, while a second tool post is movable at least in the same biaxial direction as the directions of movement of the first tool post. A control device superposes the movement required for the first tool post to machine work on the movement required for the second tool post to machine work, so that the machining operation of the work by the tool on the first tool post and the machining operation of the work by the tool on the second tool post are simultaneously performed.

  • Patent number: 7234379
Abstract: An arrangement for reducing vibrations in a tool holder (4) with a cutting tool (3) and has a vibration sensor on the tool holder (4) that is connected to a guide unit (11). The tool holder (4) has further two piezo-electric actuators 14 and 15. Under the influence of the vibration sensor (9), the guide unit (11) provides an electric alternating current that is actively guided over time so that the actuators movably affect the tool holder (4) to reduce the vibrations in this. To also be able to dampen transients in the tool holder (4) this is movably connected with a passive dampening arrangement that is independent of the guide unit (11) and that is based on the principle of a springing (8) suspended mass (7). The invention also relates to a method for reducing vibrations. The vibrations in the tool holder are sensed and a corresponding signal is provided to a guide unit that over time provides actively guided signals to the actuators.

Abstract: A method of forming a low-friction, helically ridged skirt surface of an engine piston comprises cutting a continuous groove in a piston body rotating about axis so that adjacent groove turns intersect as ridges and carry lubricating oil which forms a film on the ridged surface. The groove is cut by way of a diamond tool tip traversing along the axis. Whereas in a known, standard finish, the ridges have sharp peaks that can rupture the oil film, the tool is here modified to include a planing tip fixed spatially with respect to the tip so that after formation each ridge is planed flat to provide a plateau between groove turns that exerts less film rupturing pressure against a cylinder wall while defining a uniformly flat outer surface for the piston. The cutting may vary the piston diameter toward the ends of the body to effect barreling in which the relationship between plateau width and groove depth vary.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for substantially nullifying vibration and deflection in a single point lens turning lathe having a rapidly reciprocating lens cutting tool and shuttle assembly. The apparatus includes three or more tool shuttles of similar mass mounted for reciprocating movement along respective generally parallel shuttle paths. The shuttles are reciprocally moveable by respective actuators along their respective shuttle paths. The shuttle and tool assemblies are moved by their respective actuators in opposite directions at a rate which causes forces generated by shuttle and tool assemblies moving in one direction to cancel forces arising from the shuttle and tool assembly movement in the opposite direction. Should an odd number of shuttle and tool assemblies be used, the amount of force generated by the mass moving in one direction may be compensated by having a different rate of movement, and hence a different stroke length from the mass moving in the opposite direction.

Abstract: A precision optical element is described, such as is used in thermal imaging systems in the infra-red, manufactured by means of single point machining, with both of its surfaces having an aspheric form, with or without the addition of a diffractive optics pattern. The element is produced while held in a novel vacuum chuck, whose support surface has a width in the radial direction significantly less than the size of the element, and which is aspherically machined to match the aspheric first surface of the element. A method whereby such an element can be produced by means of single point machining, such as diamond turning or fly cutting, is also described. Also described are new optical system designs and applications using such double-sided aspheric elements, thereby providing significant improvement over currently available optical systems.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for fine adjustment of the position of the cutting tool. In one embodiment, a boring tool includes a coupling member driven by a CNC boring machine, a cutting tool which is slidably coupled to the coupling member, and a slidable adjustment member. A frictional force resists sliding movement of the cutting tool. The frictional force is sufficient to retain the position of the cutting tool during machining operations. However, the frictional force is insufficient to resist an adjusting force applied by the adjustment member. Sliding motion of the adjustment, either by pulling or pushing it, results in movement of the cutting tool. In one embodiment, the cutting tool and the adjustment member are slidable in different directions. In another embodiment, the boring tool is adapted and configured to convert a first, greater amount of movement by the adjustment member to a second, lesser amount of movement by the cutting tool.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for truing the interface between an arrow shaft or insert and the arrow tip is provided. A squaring tool having a frame with at least one V-shaped channel supports an arrow shaft in parallel with the frame longitudinal axis. A cutting tool is mounted on the frame. A cutting surface of the cutting tool is perpendicularly aligned to both the tool frame longitudinal axis and the V-shaped channels. Each channel supports the arrow wherein an arrow longitudinal axis aligns in parallel with the frame longitudinal axis. The arrow is placed in the tool having the interface adjacent to the cutting surface and the assembly is rotated within the channels as the arrow shaft is translated against the cutting surface. The interface is cut by the cutting surface to perpendicularly align the interface with the arrow longitudinal axis.

The locator device has a base and a plurality of flanges extending from the base in an axial direction and arranged circumferentially to define an aperture for at least partially receiving the rotatable member axially. The flanges defining slots for receiving radial portions of the rotatable member with the radial portions extending radially outward from the flanges. Thus, the locator device can support boreless rotatable members so that a tool can be supported against the radial portions of the rotatable member to thereby form the rotatable member to predetermined dimensions.

The NC lathe includes a first spindle and a second spindle, and a tool rest having tools for processing works. The tool rest is freely movable in the direction of Z1-axis and X1-axis. The second spindle is freely movable in the direction of X2-axis and Z2-axis. An NC unit controls the movement in the direction of the X1-axis and the Z1-axis of the tool rest, and controls the movement in the direction of the X2-axis and the Z2-axis of the second headstock. The NC unit superposes the movement in the direction of the X2-axis on the movement of the X1-axis of the tool rest. Furthermore, the movement of the Z2-axis is superposed on the movement in the direction of the Z1-axis of the tool rest.

  • Patent number: 6886436
Abstract: A device and a method are disclosed for attenuating a chatter oscillation in a processing machine, for example a cutting machine, such as a lathe. The machine includes at least one feed system with a primary section and a secondary section driven by a linear motor which can be powered via a converter. The device has a magnetic field control to control an in-phase component (d-component) of the magnetic field which produces the attractive force between of the primary section and the secondary section. An actual signal that is proportional to the chatter oscillation is generated and compared with a predetermined setpoint for a chatter oscillation. The comparison produces a control variable which is applied as a current setpoint to a field control that controls the current of the linear motor. This sufficiently attenuates chatter oscillations so that a reduction of the cutting depth is no longer required.
