Abstract: An actuator for moving a tool is disclosed, comprising a housing in which a tappet carrying a tool holder is guided axially movable, wherein the tappet is movable by means of a fast drive, e.g. by a piezo drive or by a nanotube drive, which is biased against a restoring force and which is dampened by a dampening element. Herein the fast drive may at least partially be received within a recess of the tappet which leads to a very compact design, in particular in combination with a coaxial dampening element. For guiding the tappet in axial direction alternatively a roller guide may be used (FIG. 3).

  • Patent number: 6945147
Abstract: A clamping device for machine tools is disclosed that is capable of ensuring the clamping force for a tailstock while maintaining a small overall size of the device and a reduced number of parts. The tailstock (movable carriage) movably mounted on a fixed bed is clamped at a specified position to the fixed bed. A stationary rack (stationary fitting member) extending in a direction of movement is fixed to the fixed bed. A movable rack (movable fitting member) is provided on the tailstock so as to be movable in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the tailstock. Wedge-shaped fitting surfaces are formed at mutually opposing portions of the stationary rack and the movable rack. The movable rack is driven to perform advance-and-retreat motions between a clamping position where the movable rack fits together with the stationary rack and an unclamping position where the clamping state is released.

  • Patent number: 6370994
Abstract: The invention provides a clamping device for machine tools capable of preventing the occurrence of impressions. In a clamping device for machine tools, a tailstock (movable carriage) is provided on a top face of a fixed bed and the tailstock is positioned and fixed with respect to the fixed bed. The tailstock is supported by linear-motion bearings (guides) which are disposed between the tailstock and the fixed bed. Blocks are slidably engaged with rails extending in the travel direction with rollers interposed between them. Further, a recess portion extending in the travel direction is formed in the top surface of the fixed bed. A cylinder mechanism is arranged so that left and right inner walls in the recess portion are pressed by a pair of pistons provided on the undersurface of a headstock.

  • Patent number: 6269718
Abstract: A platform for supporting an engraving head in a manner accommodating translational movement without any associated rotation. The platform has a deck which is supported by a pair of flexible support columns. In operation the platform is situated alongside a rotating printing cylinder. The engraving head is mounted on the deck of the platform and is provided with a guide shoe which rides against the surface of the printing cylinder. As the cylinder rotates to angular positions having different radii, the engraving head responds with a purely linear reaction. Consequently the engraving head is able to engrave uniform-depth cavities in the surface of the printing cylinder. In two alternative embodiments the deck is driven by a resilient link arrangement which is coupled to a leadscrew and carriage assembly.

  • Patent number: 6237453
Abstract: A rigid tool slide support is disposed to be mounted in a screw machine in either of two different operating positions in each of which a tool slide reciprocates on the upper surface of the support to convey a cutting tool to and from the work that is to be machined. Projecting centrally from the bottom surface of the slide is an elongate, dovetail shaped guide which is slidably mounted in a similarly shaped but slightly wider recess in the support. Secured in the recess of the support adjacent one side thereof, and slidably engaged with a confronting side of the dovetail guide of the slide, is an elongate expansion gib having therein an adjusting screw that is rotatably adjustable to expand or contract the length of the gib, thereby to adjust the running clearance between the support and the slide.

  • Patent number: 6082234
Abstract: An adjustable toolholder apparatus includes a base plate having a planar supporting surface. A holder body includes a bottom planar supported surface which slideably engages and rests upon the supporting surface of the base plate. A linear position adjuster provides a linear sliding motion of the holder body upon the base plate. An angular position adjuster provides a rotational sliding motion of the holder body upon the base plate. The holder body has a wedge shaped recess within which is received a wedge shaped carrier block. A vertically adjustable column supports the wedge shaped carrier block from the base plate to adjust a height of the cutting tool. After linear and angular adjustment of the cutting tool relative to the base plate, the wedge shaped carrier block is clamped to the holder body, and the holder body and base plate are clamped to a cross slide to fix the cutting tool in its final desired position.
